Devotional singing is generally meant to be a shared experience, but this really exists at another level more personal than that. It's not a hymn to be belted out in a gathering. Rather it is the prayer of an individual in reflective solitude directly to the Holy Spirit - including a passage of wordless communion - which we are not prevented from overhearing. It is as though we'd stepped into the peace of a church, and paused to absorb the personal devotions which happen to be in progress, stepping out again renewed at the vicarious brush with the divine.
