Sitting on an old castle mound on the edge of the Insh Marshes in Badenoch, Ruthven Barracks was built in 1719 after the 1715 Jacobite uprising. It was partially destroyed by Jacobites following their retreat after the Battle of Culloden in 1746; but the complex comprises two large 3-storey blocks occupying two sides of the enclosure and bastion towers on opposite corners with loopholes for firing muskets.
