I have always thought that Astrud Gilberto had one of the sweetest voices ever, and now, to my utter delight, I find that her appearance matches her voice. :D
She has such a soft and effortless style of singing. Nothing is forced; it just flows like clear water in a stream. And the way she moves between Portuguese and English so smoothly. It is just so lovely.
Lots of flats, sharps, scales, tempo changes.....her voice is truly an instrument that is part of the group...she is one of the best jazz singers ever.......May Astrud rest in peace....
It is a pitty and sad that she could never be a little more self confident at all. But on the other hand it is her brand. She is wonderful, sweet and lovely with her kind of singin...R.I.P. Astrud
I was smitten by her unadulterated brilliance, no vibrato necessary, her subtle transcendent clarity and beauty since first hearing her in about 1965. Thank you for sending this uplifting video.
It was the way it was when I was a lad. Pure talented musicianship from all. Beatles, though Martin used a bit of fancy stuff, were just using their own talent. They and other great artists proved that you need natural talent to convince people of your craft. It was just beautiful raw music. That's all I ever had...a basic acoustic going through a mic, with tad of reverb, not too much, and a bit tad of reverb on my vocals. That's all we had...just the basics. These top artists made total magic out of the basics to begin with. Astrud was no different. Beautiful raw talent.
There are so many fine and insightful comments here about this unique woman and her unique style. She seems almost like an "ordinary" unaffected woman who has just stepped up to the microphone and her fine voice and phrasing emerges. No "over-performing". Just lets her voice and talent speak for themselves.
@@pacz8114 It's an African-American cultural degradation thing. It didn't used to be like this even for them (and in the context of jazz, especially for them).
She is stunning. Also, whoever recorded this really knew what they were doing, you couldn't ask for a better sound. Even all the new technology we have now, recordings don't get any better than this.
The audio quality IS wonderful. Too bad the video quality is so poor. Not just the fuzzy 1962 TV recording, but the squashed aspect ratio that makes her look too short and round.
Featuring the legendary drummer Dom Um Romão! He toured a lot with Astrud and recorded on several of her albums such as Look To The Rainbow, Gilberto with Turrentine, The Shadow Of Your Smile etc. A Brazilian legend.
Her vocal control is amazing. That limpid vibratoless sustain, such a difficult and exposed approach, just astounding how effortlessl and casual she makes it look, even as she is clearly a supported and deeply technical singer. Not the only one who ever put all these pieces together, but surely a pioneer, and one of the greats.
Da Bahia para o mundo. A voz doce, suave e encantadora da Bossa Nova. A verdadeira embaixadora do movimento da música brasileira que ganhou o planeta. Obrigado Astrud Gilberto, você vai deixar muitas saudades!!!❤❤❤
I'm just pinching myself as I can hardly believe this footage exists and that I've lived long enough to see it. Bless you for posting… never have I seen such close up camera work with her…she's beyond words... is it a dream……
What an incredible soft and soothing voice Astrud has-so beautiful and stunning! You will never see anything like this on the voice or American Idol. Beautiful music of the past seems to only live on through RU-vid.
You can tune a piano after her and at the same time she invented a new way to sing as if there was no art at all. So humble and so stellar. The true human shines through like no one else. Maybe Chet Baker. And then the beauty on top. After her singing, no one should talk ever. Just let her in. Let her stay. When she had been that young, she must not have explored all facets of her voice but was already perfect. I hope she reads how much we all still love her. May she enjoy life as long as she wants. She’s immortal anyway.
You can't pour fine wine from an empty bottle. Astrud has such richness and earnest warmth..she need not sing, she just parts her lips demurely and purrs her deliciously sultry angel breath and her gorgeous clean soul fills our hearts. I adore this lady so much my soul aches like silent earthquake
This recording has captured Astrud in the prime of her youth, when her voice was the perkiest, and the musicians backing her are excellent. This is such a rare treasure !
just found this now.. how i fell in love with Astrud, when I was 17 , like 1981, when first heard Girl from Ipanema , and of course Stan on sax that time. This is so great. Here we hear even more of her perfect sweet pitch...
All of her innocence to cameras, audiences and TV's inherent "chilling" effect comes out in her eyes, and their almost lost appearance. Dom Um Romao's major introduction came with his performance with Sinatra & Jobim. He was one of the smoothest Brazilian drummers I am aware of. This is so wonderful, thank you. All well practiced and performed by the diva de bossa nova!
sandra helen Well, now you have hit a soft spot with me. I love Ellis, who was taken from the world way too early. I guess I just put singers like Ellis, Kenia, and Nana Caymmi into another "realm" of true classic Brazilian female vocalists. Astrud, to her credit, got serious with her recording with Stanley Turrentine.
Astrud has a delicate,in tune voice,in her style she is the best,I mean in bossa nova, the music nowadays can not compare to the music of Astrud and Tom Jobim.I am brazilian,I play bossa nova and it will never end, good music is forever.
Incredible, priceless footage of a special moment in time - Astrud's vocal here is magnificent as always! Her easy, soothing, natural delivery is on point! She may be the greatest female vocalist in history! Astrud's outfit is nearly as stunning as her voice and beauty!!!
i agree partially, but let's not be so eager to classify. remember there were women like ella fitzgerald, mahalia jackson, aretha franklin, aura urziceanu, billie holiday etc.
10/10 Definitely concur. And... here's a tidbit... drummer Dom Um Romão also performed with Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66. So this is quite a super-group event here. Of course, it's all about Astrud!
@@McGigi666 You are right, of course.Let's also not forget Marilyn McCoo, Judith Durham, Mama Cass Elliot, Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins and Mariska Veres. There are others, of course, but I think I'll stop here.
2:42 Meditation 5:23 It Might As Well Be Spring 9:02 The Telephone Song 10:36 Only Trust Your Heart 12:37 Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars) 14:38 The Girl From Ipanema
One of the best recordings of Astrud. She seems progressively more relaxed and really kicks it! What a legend. Her voice so clear. I love the way she pronounces and savors her words, working the word in the tone. Loved the syncopation of the Telephone song. Excellent camera work on this. One song better than the next. Awesome. Thanks for posting! Last winter heard "It might as Well be Spring" sitting in a Starbucks in Madison, Wisc, while it was -15F degrees outside............her song made me smile! :)
Since I first heard the voice of Astrud Gilberto, still I was a ... child, I haven't not only fallen in love with her voice. The love continues to this Day. Every time I hear and/or see them again, I'm lovingly reminded of them musically. Bossa Nova ist an important beat into the rhythm of my live. This love ❤ is immortal😊. Even in you've left us now: THANK YOU for your wonderful music 😊, which will outlast the time in its harmony..Astrud, where ever you now are: Let the hearts 💖💗💞💞💕 and souls dance Samba 😊 In love Werner Watzlaw🥰
I'm still coming to grips we lost Astrud on June 5th this year. Another great loss of international talent. The beginning of the year saw us lose a few great artists. And now Astrud.
Each time I see her perform or hear her voice I fall in love all over again. I've been doing that since I first heard her voice in '62 when I was 12 years old.
I saw Astrud live at S.O.B.'s in downtown Manhattan many years ago. It was a thrill seeing her, though it wasn't her best night: the club was so packed that the noise from the tables bothered her. This long clip shows a quality she always had: that she'd just been pressed into singing out of the blue, that she'd come up to the microphone from the audience without ever having sung in public before, and that she was a bit nervous with all the attention on her. But over and over she won hearts.
Astrud is so amazingly talented. Her voice is so soft and beautiful. She ranks with Billy Holliday , Sarah Vaughn, Carmen MCrea, Elise Regina. All of 'em. There are so many other tunes she could have done. But so little time.
Would like to give her a thousand likes and kisses. She had been my favourit singer in my youth, next to Dinah Washington and Ella Fitzgerald. Still love her very much...beautiful beeing...!
As a studio engineer myself, I agree. This recording is outstanding. What year was this made? The music, her voice, and her beauty is what most people focus on, and I get this. But this sound quality is shocking!
This is fantastic. I'm a lifelong Astrud fan and didn't even know this footage existed. It's so beautifully raw. Astrud's crooning is great, even when she sings slightly flat. Thank you for posting this video.
I had no clue this video existed!!! “The Telephone Song (Buzz Buzz)” is probably my favorite thing Astrud ever did. She is a Goddess for sure!!! So breathy and immediate-like your favorite girl whispering into your ear....
Fantastic to hear this now. The BBC did a show with Astrud Gilberto about the same time (1965) , with a band led by Canadian sax player Art Ellefson. Be great if that is ever unearthed.
Wow! It is so rare to see and hear Astrud sing some of her greatest songs in one video. Thank you for posting this. To see how cool and easy it is for her to sing these songs is so amazing. No fancy dancing or movement. Just glancing from side to side with the occasional smile brings a great impact on the viewer. Astrud Gilberto and Bossa Nova lives on.....

When I was born, and the following years, this was heard by my baby and little child ears. Later: etcetera. So thats why I was brought up with lovey music.
