I love "Läpi lehväin henki soipi". You can truly hear and feel the spirit move in it. Perhaps it's the Nordic spirit. But there is something really frigid, something longing in there. Thank you for the beautiful music.

TRANSLATION: Someone requested from me that I translate the song titles and lyrics. So, here is my attempt at translating the lyrics and song titles. I'm not doing an exact literal translation - I'm taking some small liberties in translating to make it more understandable. The texts are quite poetic and they use old words and old phrasing, thus, there may be some errors. I also wrote a few sentences on the words used and some other thoughts that came to my mind, hopefully they wont diverge too much form the actual music. -- 1. Carrying the flame on a birch bark Note: Birch bark was traditionally used as a source of light in Finland. The winters in Finland are very dark and a birch bark is a poor source of light, but you can use it as a portable souce of light. I recall my grandmother told me that the people used to put them between the logs of the log walls of peoples cabins. -- 2. You could see his/her tracks on the ice Note: A person is likely referred here, while the literal translation was "of that" instead of "of his/her". Lyrics: Kun ensin emästä syntyi, (T: After he/she was born from the mother, *) kesät keikkui hetkessä. (T: the summers passed by rapidly) Suurimmilla suon selillä, (T: on the largest wetlands**) talvet aijoilla ajeli, (T: In the winters he/she was riding on the sledge ***) Ilmi maita, (T: He/she crossed many lands,) ilmi aavoja ahoja (T: he/she crossed many glades,) ilmi rautaisen korennon, sepon Ilmarin pajassa (T: he/she encountered a/the metallic rod/pole, in the smithy of the smith Ilmarinen****) Aivan alle ahjoksensa (Right under his furnace) metsiänsä liepehillä (T: Near his forest(s)) (* There is no he/she in Finnish, only a neuter which means both he and she. Due to to Finnish language structure, you can make the sentences such that you are using he/she without actually using the word for he/she. This is a very minor point, but I'm saying this because I added the he/she to the translations and they are not actually used anywhere on the Finnish lyrics.) (** To give you some context: 20% of Finlands land mass are wetlands (suo). Also, to get an image to your mind what the wetlands look like: you can do a google image search with the keyword "Finnish swamp".) (*** I'm not sure about this "aijot". My guess is that it is some dialect word either for a sledge pulled by dogs or reindeer or alternatively it may mean some sort of carriage, yet I'd bet my money on the first one.) (**** Maybe something is in the process of making in the smithy of Ilmarinen. Smith Ilmarinen was a heroic figure from the Finnish folkore with some godlike features. He created many great works including Sampo which could create fortune and riches for its owner. I do not know of this "metallic mayfly", perhaps it is some artifact which Ilmarinen created. There is an English wikipedia article about Ilmarinen if you want to know more about him. Ilmari is a nickname for Ilmarinen which is also a common Finnish first name.) Couple additions made here based on @Suakeli's comment below. -- 3. The spirit passes through the leafy branches of the trees -- 4. On the great summer war (Or On the great summer of wars) I cannot comprehend what is being mumbled here. -- 5. Embrace the pain Lyrics: Kiputyttö tuonen neiti, (Girl of pain, the young woman of the land of the dead*) äkätär neito äijä, (T: Angry maiden for the man) kivut puohat puohtimella, (T: Relieve the pain with a sieve) vaivat seulolla selitä, (T: Explain the ailments**) kiviä kivistämähän, (to aching the stones) paasia pakottamahan, (to force unto gravestone ***) kiviö sikkisi kipuja, (the place of stone was a source of pain) paasi päiviä pahoja (gravestone for the worse days) kivi ennen kirkukohon (the stone shall first scream) paasi ennen parkukohon (the gravestone shall first cry) ennen kuin emosen tuoma (before brought upon by the mother nature/(just mother)) tahi kantama kapehen (or the distance shall become shorter) (* Tuonen neito is another figure from Finnish folklore. She is a ferryman who brings dead people to the land of the dead (tuonela in Finnish). Tuone is referring to Tuonela. (** Same meaning as the previous part "kivut puohat puohtimella", but using different words. This kind of repetition is used a lot in this track. Kalevala poems have a similar repetition structure, the things in the poems are often repeated to help memorization. Finnish folklore was not originally written down and it was only an oral tradition. Oral traditions have a greater need to be memorized than written traditions.) (***The lyrics speak of a large smooth rock; "paasi", but I think gravestone is referred in here.) My interpretation of this song is that if the pain is not embraced bad things will happen. You could also think that the mother brings the pain in this world and therefore stating that the pain is inevitable in this world. And then finally the stone of the earth, or the gravestone will give ailment to your pains, so you have to suck it up. Some additions here based on the comment of @Suakeli below, also he has a good alternative interpretation of this track. 6. I was arming my bow for a week's long time There are smithing noises in the track.

Excellent translation! I'm no expert, but I think the "korennon" refers to a tool of some sort instead of "mayfly" ("sudenkorento" means literally a wolf's pole). A wooden "korento" is a long pole with buckets on both ends to carry water, so an iron korento could be a long iron rod used in smithing, maybe a handle for bellows? The next part sounds like "metsiensä liepehellä", near his forest. "kivut puohat puohtimella" refers to an old farming tool puohdin. It's like a sieve for separating the wheat from the chaff. "Vaivat seulolla selitä" also means clearing/purifying the pain with a sieve. I interpret is as a magical song to relieve the pain. Perhaps a seer asking the Maiden of Pain to collect the pain from the child ("emosen tuoma" means "brought [to this world] by the mother") and transfer it to stones of the earth instead. The title "käy nyt tuskat tuntemahan" could also mean "know the pain", as in know the origin of pain to control it and banish it, but I'm not sure. The lyrics are really ambigous, mysterious and fascinating.
@ChesDertube
@ChesDertube 3 года назад
@@suakeli Yeah. 5 probably prayer or spell from the times when the gods wasn't in the current form. "metsiäksen liepehellä" or "Metsähisen liepehellä" How ever in my imagination it could mean "close by gods". (Metsänväki)
@Naukkat
@Naukkat 3 года назад
@@suakeli Yes, ambiguous, mysterious and fascinating indeed it is. Thanks for the good additions! I made some edits to the original translation based on your comment. Some more speculation incoming :) Regarding the "korento". Maybe something is in the process of making in the smithy of Ilmarinen, and that is the "metallic rod". Initially, you start the process of smithing from a piece of metal which resembles a rod, right? It could also refer to some unfinished metalwork which is found from the smithy of Ilmarinen then finished later on in the last track as you can hear smithing noises in the last track. I don't really have knowledge on smithing, but that is what comes to my mind from the rod.

The name of the album "Sotakesä" literally means "War summer", where sota=war and kesä=summer. It appears to be a word play from "Talvisota", while the word order and meaning have been inversed. The word "Talvisota" means "Winter war" which was the war between Finland and Soviet Russia in 1939-1940.
@martinvasut4319
@martinvasut4319 6 лет назад
Do you think "Sotakesa" refers to that war rather than being just a metaphor ?
@Naukkat
@Naukkat 6 лет назад
I doubt it refers to that war. The lyrics contain Finnish mythology, e.g., the smith hero "Ilmarinen" from Kalevala is mentioned in the song "Jäällä tuon jäljet näkyvi". The song titles also refer to ancient times, e.g., song 6: "Viikon joustani varustin" means something like "For one week I was arming my bow" or "For one week I was preparing my bow".

Very nice piece of Finnish music. Reminds me a lot of my family's cabin in Lapland! The song titles translate somewhat into this: 1. (S/he) Carried fire with birch bark 2. On ice that's tracks are seen 3. Through sprig spirits rang 4. On a great summer war 5. Hmm... tuska is pain or agony and nyt is now. I think this kind of saying is impossible to translate from word to word, you have to know the language to get it! 6. I I armed my bow for a week. Very hard to translate this old kind of Finnish by the way!
@sengoku_fin
@sengoku_fin 6 лет назад
Käy nyt tuskat tuntemahan? Sure, a few ways to go by it. It has some unspoken tones, so here's some: Come, join our agony Join to know the suffering Come now to feel the pain Come to know now the torment something like that
@chuckfriebe843
@chuckfriebe843 3 года назад
In English, where Finnish uses an ungendered reference to someone, the translation would be "They carried the fire with birch bark" and "On ice their tracks are seen". It's a poetic reference referring to "those who" did the action indicated in the lyric.
