This actress.......I can't even say she did the role justice because that's an understatement of her greatness. She embodied this. In every aspect. Beautiful.
Yeah of course, Zhou Xun is the first actress who won all the three most prominent prizes in Chinese cinema for "best actress in a leading role". She is incredible.
If you watch a lot of Chinese dramas there are performances that are much better than ruyi's but they are mostly vintage actresses....though ruyi did a fantastic job here though. I also love her best friend who was an awesome actress too!
It’s sadly poetic that Ruyi’s maid Rongpei who died and committed suicide right long side her. Rongpei felt like she owed everything including her life to Ruyi because she was the closest thing she had to family. She was so loyal and was Ruyi’s closest companion after losing so many people over the years. And something I find incredibly beautiful is that the longest lasting relationship in this drama is between Ruyi and Rongpei. Rongpei was loyal to her even in the afterlife
It was the system that caused endless tragedies in the palace. For the emperor he could have 3,000 concubines and there is no true love in the marriage between the emperor and his empress.
There's something I noticed in the final conversation between Rongpei and Ruyi, when the latter asks the former to sit with her. Rongpei sorts of only concedes to "break" the rules of sitting with her (it's against the rules for the servants to sit with the people they serve) when Ruyi asks her for company. For me it shows Rongpei put their relationship above any rules and goes to show their deep bond.
@@happyeagle92 yes suoxin become disable but she loyal to her until the end and consort yu help her a lot when she is in cold palace even poisoned herself to release her from cold palace
The sad thing about this is he never once apologized. Even after he realized that he had accused her wrongly. He just said it's water under the bridge. I believed she loved who he was and not who he had become. That's why she essentially committed suicide.
She didn't committed suicide. She died because of illness. But she refused taking medication for the illness because at that time that illness cure was not available. But the medicines can only let her live little more days.
@@dreaminsomnia8487 true but that's exactly what it is. Though it's a few days she did stop the medicine. Isn't that what she was feeding to the green plum plant. It is essentially suicide. She gave up. Also I have read that the actress that played Ruyi requested that they change the ending and have it a bit more subtle by her dying from the sickness.
@@pagee7452 She actually did start taking the medication to elevate her symptoms while she was investigating the Concubine. When everything was done she stopped. That is suicide, she gave up cause she wanted to be free. The tuberculosis was her cause of death yes, but she could have prolong her time with medication but she chose to stop when her goals was achieved. That is suicide.
@@casiatree4834 she accepted her fate. Do you mean, if a person who had terminal cancer decided to not take pain meds, the person is committing suicide? Her fate is sealed. Whether she takes the meds or not, she will still die. Meaning, she has no option to live in the first place. Suicide is cutting your life deliberately despite having the option to live a long healthy life. Please do not mock those people who are terminally ill and had accepted their condition.
Her voice is always different in every step of the journey. When she was young, and when she rose to the top, when she struggled, and now at the end of her life it's different again. Amazing actress.
On so many occasions, the Emperor was disrespectful to Ruyi ... building an elaborate palace because of his infatuation with Rong, allowing Ruyi to be placed in prison for 3 years to prove she was innocent, and allowing the other women in the harem to get away with so much evil towards her. This includes Empress who plotted against Ruyi from the beginning with the bracelet and other schemes. He knew of the evil things Empress Xiaoxianchun did and in the end, he still told Ruyi she could never compare. Just horrible and sad.
That always stuck with me. He acted like he loved the late empress so much, and to an extent I am sure he did, but he was not that great to her nor doted on her. Then when she dies her felt guilty and all her sins apparently dissolved. Like he knew she gave those bracelets to his Ruyi and Gao from the beginning but didn't ever punish her for it and acted like it didn't happen. And Empress tried to kill Ruyi in the cold palace. I really hated him for forgiving her.
Because Ruyi was never about power and she didn't have a strong backer/support. The other empress had a strong backer and to get rid of her would have embarrassed him politically and nationally he told her that on her death bed. He tolerated her because of that and because she never disagreed with him. She kissed his feet.. so to say.
He loved the empress cause she didn’t challenge him, honestly Ruyi only mistake was compromising her values for someone. She should have never remembered and married into that life.
@@Jen321able one thing that I realized when Aruo was alived, he got a report that Aruo was seen entering the empress palace and thats where the emperor suspect the empress Fuca even more. But instead of confronting her, he decided to shut Aruo up by making her drinking potion that make her lose voice so Ruyi cannot extraxt any info from her
Some people say that Ruyi's character is weak and a "loser". Ruyi is actually smart and I think the people who don't see the strength have only a fixed mindset about what strong is. Ruyi was actually fighting back in a realistic way. Some examples where Ruyi fought back: 1) When she delivered the scriptures that Gao Guifei had punished her to write to the Emperor after the former had declined her first batch of scriptures. 2) How she got to have the First son to be her foster son when he was being neglected. -How Ruyi helped Lianxin get rid of the abusive Eunuch husband and also clear the false allegations against her of how she spread rumours of Mei's child. 3) In the cold palace when the Empress had tried to use the Empress Dowager to get rid of her by sending her the paper money when her father passed away. After this the ED started to see Ruyi in a new light after she saved her from being assassinated. 4) Using Arsenic to poison herself after the many attempts on her life in the cold palace which led to Emperor getting her out. Have to give Hailan a shoutout for the cinnabar risk (she's a real one). 5) Using a different style of embroidery (from her normal one) for the shoes she made for Ling Yunche, as a thank you for all the times he had helped her. This was handy later on to clear cheating allegations against her. 6) Informing the Emperor of the bracelet (birth control) through Gao Guifei, this is better than her telling him directly cause Gao Guifei is closer to Empress and Ruyi wasn't in good terms with the Empress. 7) Swapping the buddha bracelet with a fake one when Jia had accused her of infidelity with the monk. How she put the bracelet in the cake thing and her imitating the Emperor's handwriting to make her point of being framed. Have to give a shoutout to Hailan, Li Yu and Ling Yunche in this scheme as well. 8)Ruyi cutting her hair. She knew the graveness of it and consequences but I believe (we don't know what she was fighting historically) it must have been something that was past her bottom line. As a woman in that time, she couldn't physically defy him and this is one of the few extreme things she could do to make her stance. -Ruyi using the Emperor to lay the trap for Wei Yanwan. Shoutout to ED, Jiang Yubin, Hailan, Consort Rong and everyone who made it happen. There are many things that I have learnt from this drama, we all don't have to fit to what people deem strong or successful. Having a clear mind and heart, not compromising our beliefs and integrity. I actually find a lot of relatable modern day themes as well. Learning to accept things is also a big lesson, Flowers bloom and flowers fall, there's a timing to them.
Words like womanhood and femininity come to my mind and what their definitions are and what they mean to me in my life now as a woman. I have learned so much from this drama and from Ruyi as she's depicted here even though the story is partly fictional. You are a strong and successful woman even without having kids and able to take care of other people... you can be gentle and strong at the same time... you can be brave and stand against injustice and infidelity without compromising who you are. What is the true essence of a woman? We are so beautiful and complex in every way. We deserved to be cherished and respected.
Exactly! Most drama fans think that strong female leads are those that can fight and make bold decisions. Being a good fighter doesn't always equal to a strong character. Making bold decisions, doesn't show strength. Viewers only see that the FL was able to turn the situation around because they were bold and fearless enough to do something that no one else would, but the viewers never take into consideration the fact that those female leads are relying on the female lead's luck. The luck, where everything goes exactly in the FL's favor and if the FL failed there's always someone who would save her. A strong character is someone who can stand on her own. Doesn't rely on someone else to save them. Someone who continues to stand up no matter what problems and failures they encounter. A character who takes responsibility for their decisions no matter what the outcome is. The best example about the misconception of a strong Female Lead is Fuyao. Don't take me wrong, I love Fuyao. But her character is weak. Fuyao can fight, she has everything that should make a strong character but the writers make her character weak. All throughout the drama, Wuji always needs to save her. She can fight but can't stand on her own. She is so dependent on Wuji. Without Wuji, Fuyao would never be successful. Instead of becoming an equal partner who can help him, Fuyao is like a baggage weighing Wuji down. Wuji needs to fight two battles, his battle and her battles and he also needs to baby sit her most of the time. When she encounters failure, she needs to Wuji to pull her back on her feet.
@@張明鳳-b6n I hope it improves for you a bad heartbreak can turn a heart to stone but one must not live too long with bitterness the hardest thing is learning to love again learning to live again but you can do it
There’s something powerful about the beginning scene. The fallen empress walks with her last remaining friend and ignoring the one who caused he to fall. All while knowing he’s there.
The emperor is cause his own problems, he get angry easily, Ruyas his punching bag, he spoke to her, in a loud angry tones, he displayed how he felt about her, she had endured enough pain , loneliness and heartache for a life time, I would not wish this type a man on my worse enemy
When she burned her picture she sent the emperor a message. And that message was that she was so disgusted with him and the palace that she wanted nothing to do with it. That is why he erased her from the history books. He loved her so much that he respected her wishes. Learned his lesson in losing her.
And people don't realize that had she been buried with the empress title, she would have to be buried with him later on---which also meant that they will be together in the after life. Ruyi did not want that. She knew their time was up as lovers. She wanted to be free.
You can tell Ruyi was very tired in this scene, the way her body moved, but like she was at peace. When one is near death they usually talk of dead people like she did. I love how Rongpei was loyal to the end.
She can't redo the past, but atleast by burning her picture she can pretend that she never enter the palace to be the Emperor's wife... She regretted it till the core of her bone...
I dunno if she regretted it but she genuinely tried to live a good honest life motivated by her love and wanting to be loved. I think she was trying to move on and show to the emperor that she meant it when she said I divorce you when she cut her hair. She wanted to be free, she could no longer forgive him.
@ratih dwi zulya Among a lot of other things, he became convinced that Ruyi was having an affair with one of her guards (she wasn't) and punished him by turning him into a eunuch and torturing him until he eventually died. The final straw was when he started neglecting his Empress, harem, and royal duties to drink and carouse with prostitutes. And through all of it, he offered either half-apologies or no apologies at all. Dude was not a good husband by any means.

The actress who did the role of Ruyi, did a very good acting there.Especially, the death scene made me fill my eyes with tears. The acting was so realistic. It's like the viewers could understand her pain and sorrow. Well done 👏
How could he tell her to forget what happened before?! He didn’t even apologize for hurting her so badly. Her heart was hurt beyond cure...Poor Ruyi...😭😭😭
He tells her to forget the past multiple times. 1. When he got into a snit when she suggested he raise the rank of his dead mother. 2. For locking her up in the cold palace. He didn't even tell her why he was doing it - to protect her(?)- when she asked. He knew she was being attacked multiple times, but left her locked up without any word from him. 3. Not following up on the plot to get her sent to the cold palace once she was out. He told her his image was more important than finding out the truth. 4. Simply tells her to quit wearing the bracelet the first empress gave her. Never acknowledges the wrong done to her, let alone get justice. 5. Simply tells her to get over losing her children. He also is hurting but believes he can show it. He then later tells her he was mad she never comforted him even though he neglected her in her grief. The list goes on. Each time he doesn't want to deal with something, he simply says don't think about it. Such beliefs only lead to unresolved issues that grow and cause pain/trouble later.
How to forget living 3 years on hell because he want to protect his name forget that you send to kill a inocente man, how you broke your vows of be forever, how forget the treatment agaisnt her? I love her silence when he was talking, he was talking and she was quiet maybe thinking this is the last time you going to have a surprise.

This make me think of one of my aunty who die refusing to take medicine. She was a calm lady who never raise her voice sadly she failed in love with the wrong guy, she had live with the guy who promised her with lots of fake love at the end he married another woman and my aunt was force to go for abortion. My aunt love him with all she got. She was a beauty the whole town used to talk about her beauty but she refused to fall in love ever again. She died of tuberculosis because she refused medication. She was my favourite aunty whom I love the most. It is so unfair the man now live with two kids and a healthy wife after what have he done to my aunty. This has greatly impacted my life I also find it hard to trust a man. I couldn't stop crying watching this video.
Ssfety tip. Friends first before you date. At least a friend won't hide how they truly are because they don't have the intention to hide their flaws just to have a fling with you. If a guy shows interest push friendship first. If he is unwilling to be friends first then he was not that serious to begin with imo. This is old fashion thinking and many guys won't go for it but it can help keep you safe.
That guy is going to hell for sure. And a generational curse will be placed upon his ''perfect'' family. You just wait and watch. None of them will ever know peace/happiness.
Oh my gosh. That guy should never meet your aunt. But one thing I want to say is, Your aunt have live her life full with Grace. And her life is not wasted at all because she gives so many impact to the people around her and people who knew her story like us here. Thank you for sharing this story with us. Please take care.
@@jasg771 you're about to get more mad, apparently my aunt is an American Baptist and he is a Roman Catholic, their family is very conservative and they wanted that he married only Roman Catholic. That was the reason he left her. Believe me I was so furious when I found out the reason because it was so ridiculous but they take this denomination very seriously here. I hate this religion things.
I think I sort of understand all decisions that she took in her last days; refusing to meet anyone so there's no attachment after her pass, leaving the world with nothing to worry about, cutting her portrait because the image isn't already how it used to be and she just didn't want to leave anything behind. Walking around the palace and stand on the top of the wall to bid farewell since she already knew her time almost came. I really got the feeling and watching her smiling as walking and looking around was somewhat painful to look at but beautiful at same time. Especially when she told the emperor about how she finally undestood the meaning of the poem, you could realize that it's her way to say goodbye to someone she once loved the most. It's the saddest way to pass away like that, but I truly understand why she did that.
Facial expression are so great!.. you can see her pain and forgiving and doesn't care at all attitude...she looks like giving up all the hateful past and she was finally living her life.. walking with her made friend reminds me of what Heart Evangelista said in her channel.. it is okay to have less friend you don't need too many even just one that will stay by your side through thick and thin is enough.. and it also depicts her road even after all glory, love and sacrifices all she has left is that one great loyal friend/servant.. atleast she break free from that shackles of the palace and decides that it's time for her to have her own life instead of dedicating it to a person and only betrays you in the end.. that's a great courage breaking away from a broken marriage.. only few people can do that bravely🙇♀️
I haven't even watched this drama yet and can tell it's a 10/10. The acting, the writing, the cinematography, and even the music make this scene beautifully tragic. In a way, it probably depicts how women grew up in the palace, their innocents taken away only to be left with a single friend. Ruyi deserved better from the emperor and those around her, but in her final moments, you can tell she cast all her emotions away and died in peace, finally able to join her family and friends within the afterlife.
The symbolism of the plum blossom tree is so moving. Here the tree is bare (the Emperor & Ruyi are cold & distant to each other) & it’s only when the Emperor is on his deathbed when the plum tree blooms again (forgiveness).
@@magicwandstudio3141 Could it also symbolize how the Emperor treated her? How it bloomed in the beginning, became barren when he neglected her, & bloomed again when he learned the error of his ways?
@@claire.delune The green plum was given to her by the Emperor initially. (He technically gave her two, possibly due to the chinese positive association between romantic relationships and 'pairs' of gifts). When Ruyi went into the cold palace one died and the other (the current one) withered, and has stayed that way. As 'Magic Wand Studio' also pointed out, 'Qingying' (green plum) is her original name before she asked Empress Dowager to rename her. I tend to think that one version of 'Qingying' died when she went into the cold palace, and the other withered away. (Note her partings in the hairstyles before she entered the cold palace and when she was given her freedom from it! You can see how and when the Qingying and Ruyi merged and she changed). I think that the reason she tended to the green plum was because when they were children Qingying was leading Hongli, so she needed to make 'Green plum' come back in order to lead 'Hongli' back. (When she cut her hair she said that she did it for "Qingying and Hongli who are gone". She wants the Emperor to become the 'Hongli' she knew again). Ruyi had also stated many times variations of "I will always be with you"/"I won't leave you". Whether as Qingying or as Ruyi, she always keeps her words. So she is making sure a 'Qingying' isn't leaving the Emperor by keeping the green plum alive. I think that her look at the green plum (which was budding) was to say "I leave the next part up to you"/"it's your turn to accompany the Emperor now". Anyway, it is just my ponderments. Regardless, whenever watching any Cdrama pay attention to the tiny details, and don't be afraid to search on google about them. Such as: When Ruyi is Empress she wears two green flowers on her 'everyday' hairstyle, except when she visits the temple or is in mourning when they become a dull white or dull metal colour. I heard green plums are partly named because the colour of the bud and subsequent flower tends to be white and/or with a greenish tinge to them. 'Flowers' also refer to women in the Forbidden City (palace). So you have a woman in the Forbidden City who was known by the name 'Qingying' (green plum) wearing green or white flowers in their hair. That's three versions of the word 'flowers', and a nice echoing of what happened before in the cdrama. I also notice from many cdramas that many women have a line of "I have had to be [this way] all my life, I hate it, I shall now return to being me". That 'return to being me' line is often followed with either cutting their hair or commiting suicide.
It’s so sad cuz both the Empress and Rongpei knew that she was dying. Her reminiscing and talking about the what if’s, Rongpei knew that her mistress knew she was going to go that night. Still the saddest ending I’ve seen to date.
Her voice is so calming and beautiful that it makes me cry within seconds but at the same time it makes me happy. She is one of the greatest actresses I've seen. She is so beautiful that I feel thousands of emotions just by seeing her face. I don't have enough words to describe how much of a great actress she is. I love her so much
Her servant is her real soulmate according to me. She loved her respected her and cared her a lot . Atleast Ryu is lucky to have this servant all her life even death didn't seperate them.
I was here because I read an article complimenting Zhou Xun's acting, so I am here to check out her acting scene...and I just cmpletely forgot that I am here to see Zhou Xun because I am totally caught up in Ru Yi's life. A good actress let people forget about her personality because she is merged with the role, she became the role...true artist
Precisely is as if she is living a life of Ruyi… hell even i dont know how “Ruyi’s” life was lol but i would definitely want it to be how Zhou Xun potrayed it
Can we please give the maid the props she deserves, she did AMAZING during this show, ughhh it just gets me everytime. Honestly, everyone here, phenomenal.
And she uses their personal names, rather than any titles. It used to be a sign of her considering them as humans and individuals above all else, but now it's a sign of her leaving all those worldly concerns behind. :(
Maybe its just me but deep inside, I think she already forgive them. Not just for their soul to be at peace but mostly for herself as well. She knew her time is near, and she want to leave all those grudge, sadness, and anger behind and make amend with it. She always strive to do her best and now she accept there are things that she cannot change no matter what.
I feel like he did it on purpose. He made it sound like he was mad but i think he actually removed everything of hers for a reason. She never cared about the title all she cared about was having his love. She never wanted to be apart of the palace and go through all the tragedy. So he did her that one favor and removed her because he knew she never liked it and plus she was trying to get rid of her existence before she died. She cut herself out of the picture and left him with nothing to remember her by
We actually don’t know anything about the real emrpress nara. We don’t even know why she actually cut her hairs or if she really cut her hairs. This whole story is inspired by a blank page about her life. Her real story is a total mystery
It was her request according to the drama. By cutting out her empress portrait, burning it and destroying what is related to her she's declaring she doesn't want to be included in the imperial genealogy. That's how much disappointed she was at the emperor. That she just doesn't want any connection to him at all.
It's because of the hair cutting. But because of her being in that halfway position of not being deposed but fallen out of favor, her being Step Empress, even now people are fascinated with her. I always wish I could find out her real history, what could've pushed her to commit one of the gravest f**ck-yous to the Emperor who once favored her.
It is so satisfying to see Ruyi denying him everything that has to do with her. She knew she is gonna die and doesn't want any burden associated with him. That is why she denied getting back her scroll and seal. And "Let's past be in the past" is the lamest "apologies" ever. For a massive harm he has done to her - Emperor couldn't even whisper the word "Sorry". This pathetic little worm still thought it is all about him being always right. Setting herself free was the wisest she could have done.
When the marriage only end until death is coming between them...she knew it’s the only way she can be free. Empress or not, he owns everything. He deceived her so many times that she doesn’t feel anything for him anymore., no more pain , no more crying, no more hate...
I havent even watch this Drama and I just watch where she cut her hair off and this one she died and it brings me too tears 😭 Such a woman deserve more than she was given off..
He passed the funeral ceremony for the 5th princess... didn't let her meet and say goodbye to Yonjing... didn't let her say goodbye to Yongqi... took away Yongji from her. But he was expecting her to say a word to him before her death. I'm glad she didn't even left a letter or trace of her for him to remember.
Love this drama, i cried every time i see this episode, her love was pure and sincere, that after so much pain it just died, his love was selfish, demanding, arrogant 😥😭😭
Ruyi deserved so much more than this. But at least she finally found peace in death. I learned so much about life from watching this series. It was brilliantly made
I like that he thinks that he can just tell her to forget everything that happened and make up with her again. Honestly, at this point he should be on his knees begging for forgiveness. And even then she would have every right not to accept his feelings ever again.....
Moral of the story ladies, don’t compromise yourself and values for another. Ruyi was compromised so many times because of the emperor and suffered endlessly.
I'm in the states and can't understand what is said. The cinematography is perfect the costumes and sets exquisite. This actress playing Ruyi is the manifestation of grace and elegance.
You can watch it on Amazon Prime or Hulu or Viki. The name is Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace. Masterpiece and the actress who plays Ruyi is phenomenal. I would say the cast in this series are on another level than other cast in general.
I cannot emphasise how much you are right. zhou xun literally personified Ruyi and embodies it. As if she has led that harem life. Fun fact! The dowager is actually american/hongkong actress. Although i wish Ruyi was american, imagine how she would end up. Like Lucy liu or Michelle Yeow. Overall the story line is average but some of the casts was saving grace to the show!
Beautiful?? I don't agree with such things. These poor maids existed only to live for other people. Its unfair and wrong. We all got a chance to be born and should live our own lives for our own pleasure or sadness. But our life belongs to ourselves.
When the maid 1st went with the empress they did a background check and found out she had no family whatsoever. She probably committed suicide not just because of the empress but because she had no where else to go.
@@angelabarry3789 okay if you say so. As much as I super duper love historical or period dramas I always feel bad for the maids and eunuchs. I mean we are all the main leads of our life but they just live for their masters.

I haven't watched the drama and I don't know the story but this clip made me cry. Based on this clip, I can picture out the theme of the drama. A woman who married her love and become the empress should have been a perfect fairy tale. But the happily ever after end of the fairy tale is the start of her sufferings. I could see her strength, she tried to fight for happiness, for her love but the palace life and the emperor must have trampled her several times. In the end, she let go of everything and choose death. She is literally a prisoner, and would never be able to get out. Dying is the only way for her to be free. IMAO dying peacefully is better than to continue living a life in hell.
Yes she knew she was dying she kept that to herself @ her faithful maid loyalty to her empress . she tried her best to make things work very strong woman had her ups @ downs with everyone in the end it worn her out .he did love her afaird to admit being emperor would show weakness in the eyes of his people I guess.??
In fact she was the second wife, at first she saw the emperor as a friend when he was a prince and the main wife who later became an empress did various things to Ruyi and the other wife and the emperor did not say anything and so they did various things to Ruyi and the neck said nothing then the empress returned but even so the emperor who according to loved her put others above
The only person in the palace having fun was the Emperor--He just kept swinging from one woman to the next. Harem life was vicious, all those women vying for attention and position.
