😊 one of the benefits of Having an RV is Moving with the Better weather. Most all of us get a Weather Radio. And listen to it and move so you don’t get pummeled. 😊❤️

My oldest son, was trapped in a hail storm. He was in his new Jeep with the top down. He is a Marine! He said he cried like a baby while he was humped down trying to protect his head. The pain from the speed and size of the hail was similar to your video. Just a couple of day’s ago, on another channel, a first responder posted some valuable info.. When your in a situation like yours, carry a motorcycle helmet, shatter proof googles and always put on your most protective shoes or boots. Makes sense to me! He said the first thing to go in disasters are usually your eyes, then brain injury and feet and legs hurt. I am taking his expertise!

Was in Cheyenne Wyoming in 1977, when I first was in a hail storm like that! It moved in so quickly and damaged so much. There was a convertible sitting across the street from our house and the hail made a rag top out of it.

Welcome to both sides of the Rockies.Nothing quite like one of those wild storms. Summer of 1978 had terrible storms like that one that did so much damage and cost a ton of $$ for an entire region. Must have been her 1st hailstorm. It was interesting hearing someone's 1st time reaction. She made some good points once she settled down. But hail causes great damage to stick built housing as well so RV or home, doesn't matter. Hail that fierce damages things.

If you were about 3 miles south of there, you wouldn't have any windows left. Anything that faced south east was totally trashed. We have a hotel at Airport & Powers that lost, some 200 windows. The car dealer at Powers and Omaha auctioned off 900 vehicles that were beat to crap. The siding on most of the apartments, is totally shot. They have been replacing roofs everywhere. It was not a nice storm.

I can't understand why you are whinging so much. Ok it's a storm and there is some heavy hail but it is hardly the end of the world! When we were living in Bulgaria we had a worse hailstorm than that with bigger stones. They dented everybody's cars and even smashed a lot of windscreens etc but beyond that we all had nice golf ball like surfaces on the roof and bonnets, boots etc. It actually looked quite cool really. As your husband pointed out I wouldn't have wanted to be outside and getting hit by them, they probably could have been lethal! They were the size of my fist roughly and broke a few concrete roof tiles as well. I hope that your solar panels weren't damaged as they would be expensive to replace.

a little late now but as you probably know by now.... hail and any storm damage is covered under comprehensive even if the truck is 2005 and you have comprehensive coverage in most cases it makes sense to still carry comprehensive ins. have your auto insurer run you many quotes as in lots of them maybe 10 plus. here is what you should look for what is the cost for comprehensive with each deductible option. also do the same for collision. you will find that comprehensive is inexpensive with maybe a $500 deductible and that amount of damage will at least give you some money to pay for repairs. when I worked for an insurance company the difference in most cases between $500 and $1000 deductible was just a couple of bucks. comprehensive also should not increase your rates unless you have lots of comp claims. . one example is when a deer is in the road do you hit the deer or swerve? you hit the deer it is a comp claim and wont increase your rates (most cases) while swerve and hit the guard rail or a tree is collision claim and will more likely increase your rates.

I feel for you... It is very important to know the weather conditions where your at and if traveling, along your travelings... In your rig, you would have to be traveling at a slow speed for your tires to loose contact with one inch of water...

Geez ! Now ya gotta think about carrying helmets with you in the Winter when walking anywhere, cuz they could have gotten pummeled walking back from Target ! Too bad there isn't a button to push that moves a protective dome over entire rig and truck. Wow !

There are many weather resources available today. Pilots and Sailors learn to use them and study the way weather works to make travel safer. RV's are land sailors, and need to learn the same skills. Thunderstorms are now tracked, and while exact locations change.. they hardly happen "without warning". But one does need to know where to look.. and even that it is necessary to look. Good luck. Hard Lesson.

Maybe carry those thick moving blankets that movers use to pad your furniture. Quickly throw a 3 layer of them over truck, tuck em in at bottom of truck doors. Do same for solar panels on top of RV. They would take up a lot of storage space, but look what happens in a hail storm ! Wear a helmet ! Geez !

Be happy that you and your friend and dog were not physically hurt. While waiting out the storm I would advise you to prepare incase you have to leave the R.V. gather your coat, have on shoes, warm clothing, etc. A bottle of water for you to drink, a plastic cup for your dog to drink, etc. I was caught in a tornado in Memphis, TN in 2008 when a tornado came thru the campground, a tree fell on my brand new 19 foot trailer putting a hole in the rubber roof and damage to the sides of the trailer, etc. But I was not hurt.

I'm really sorry that you guys had to go through this. I wonder though: if you were to place a big tarp over your truck would that have helped protect it from hail damage? (I really don't know, but maybe that would at least decrease the intensity of the dents).

Congratulations on the new rig. It look very good and same to be and great shape. As fare as the lights not working, there is a cutoff switch usually located near the entrance door. This switch shotoff unnecessary items before hitting the road. Check it out, it might solve your problem.

Those are tornado conditions if you didn't know. You should have been looking for a safe storm shelter !!
@bookbakery
@bookbakery 3 года назад
Hello, I wanted to give RVers a better alternative. Tornadoes don't always stay in their predicted paths and can change at anytime. People like me who live in tornado prone areas have another option. Public shelters!! Public shelters are popular with people who don't have a safe place at home. Find out the county you are in and do an Internet search for public shelters in that county. They open up normally when a tornado watch is issued. A tornado watch happens before a tornado warning. A tornado watch means that tornadoes are possibility in the area. A tornado warning is when a tornado has been spotted either by radar, by law enforcement, by trained spotters, and/or by the public and it is on the ground. You want to already be in a shelter when that warning is issued. It is extremely dangerous to be in an RV, any type of vehicle, a mobile home, and/or a structure with a wide span roof such as a gymnasium. Bridge overpasses are dangerous also. Don't try to outrun a tornado. Unless you are a trained spotter, you don't know which was it is going and under what conditions it will change it's direction. Even trained tornado spotters have been killed when out in the field chasing tornadoes. Cities which have had tornado touchdowns are more apt to have a public shelter. The county list for public shelters will give you information such as are pets allowed, is it handicapped accessible, is it FEMA compliant and other pertinent information. If you are in a site built home, go to the lowest floor away from outside walls, away from windows. Wear hard soled shoes (if your area is hit by a tornado and you walk in a tornado debris area, it can cut up your shoes), a helmet (most deaths are caused by flying objects which hit people in the head) and have a whistle and/or an air horn. First responders are trained to listen for air horns and whistles.

This is wonderful information! Thank You so much. I will add, that we should also have some type of a kennel for our traveling pets if we are going to a shelter. Not sure if they would allow pets but just in case, be prepared. :)

I'm guessing you were at the Cosco furthest from the mountains. That's how it usually works here in Colorado Springs when it comes to weather. There is a very small window near the mountains where the severe weather often passes you. You go out just a few miles and that is where it all comes down... hail, tornadoes, etc. At least that is what I've noticed in the past 12 years since moving here. I have gotten hail a few times though... but seldom anything significant.

So so sorry. Hail is no fun!! Hail is usually an indicator of the worst part of the storm! I do Disaster research intakes. My many interviews with tornadoes survivors told me that hail came first then tornado. On the medical Trauma injuries.....the thing that people need in their home or RV or mobile home is a Fully Enclosed Motorcycle helmet. First thing to go is the eyes from debris, the knocked out from something hitting their head, then bad lacerations to neck vessels and face. Please some where store in RV motorcycle helmet. If you see what I see working the tornadoes it so scary. The downdraft from storms can create F1 winds too! Hope the pain eases up really feel bad for you guys.

Brenda Koweta I love this comment. Thanks so much for your input Brenda! I had a tree come down on my trailer yesterday in Texas. I love this life I live and my lil home. The best part is having REAL neighbors and the pure enjoyment of them, and you must certainly be one of those kind. We ARE all a lil more vulnerable but the rewards far outweigh the risk, which I’m sure you’re well educated about. The damage to my trailer is secondary of course but your tip about the helmet is very pertinent. I’ve lived through many storms in this RV and many others in decades working over the road in the rail and trucking business. But the way these newer models are built with SO MANY WINDOWS says much about your helmet advice. This was a very sudden storm as most are but as trusting as I am of my shelter I was still caught off guard on the damage from window glass. It’s amazing how flexible these walls are and the large windows I have are suddenly a very sobering thought as I read about your GREAT ADVICE!!! Thanks again; from a future helmet guy, lolol.

I’m so sorry for all the stress this storm caused you...I just went through Irma here in Sebring Fl. So I know how Mother Nature can cause such stress..Day at a time and everything falls back into place🌺🌺

"TOTALED" your RV? Not even close.

According to the insurance it is totaled and considered a loss. And that is because the inside frame wall where the slide out was out during the storm would cost more to fix than it was worth. Looks one thing from the outside but by slide out was almost the entire side wall. :)

So sorry. Oklahoma was like this and I couldn't.t wait to move out of the Midwest. Just hope your insurance was kind to you. We went through Irma ( hurricane) we had to replace the roof.
