The Tunnel Video: • The Tunnel
ℹ️ About the Episode
A few weeks ago, we mentioned 5 scenic drives in our top 10 National Parks videos. One of those was the Skyline Drive inside Shenandoah National Park. In response, we received so many comments about the Blue Ridge Parkway-and wow, they were right! We had no idea that this parkway was one of America's favorite drives, just like Route 66. The Blue Ridge Parkway connects Shenandoah National Park to Great Smoky Mountain National Park, with plenty of historical and unique stops along the way. Having just learned about this drive, we only got a taste of the gems along the way, but we're happy to shine some light on this part of the country for other RVers who may not know about it yet, either. In this episode, we spend all of our time near the south entrance of Shenandoah. Mostly, we just didn't know how big this National Park was. The Old Rag hike was 1.5 hours away! These are some of the obstacles we face when changing plans last minute. If you recall, our original plan was to go to back to Helen, GA. But snow sent us to Kitty Hawk instead, and a new route unfolded. As often happens, we found ourselves going with the flow-which often makes a trip even better. We hiked Crab Tree Falls and the newly restored Blue Ridge Tunnel before walking the streets of Charlottesville, soaking in all the American history. This is a place we'll come back to for sure!

I am glad you guys took the time to explore my back yard. Virginia may not have the mountain peaks like Colorado or the worlds largest volcano like Wyoming but we do offer some of the most scenic drives in America. The I81 corridor from North Carolina to West Virginia is the longest section of that interstate and one that offers beautiful views and lots of things to do and see. Hope you guys enjoyed your visit. P.S. Devils Backbone Brewery is a national brewery now owned by Budweiser with 2 locations in Charlottesville.

Talk about Summer to Remember!Your trip brought back memories of our trip to Charlottesville summer 2006 when we rented a class C RV with our 3 daughters and went to visit colleges -UVA and Thomas Jefferson home on the list before camping in Shenandoah Park! This was our 1st RV trip ever so Newbies doesn’t begin to describe the adventure. 1st major snag-in historic downtown Charlottesville looking for parking and came across a railroad bridge just about to drive under when Mike stops in the middle of the curved road and says what does that sign say?? the rig too tall to go under the bridge! Then began the 15 point turn in the RV with stopped traffic in both directions and our 3 teenage girls cowering in hopes no body would recognize them! We still talk about that trip with the grandkids now and how really beautiful the area is. Many more VA stories for sure so thanks for the memories

Going to do Shenandoah and Blue Ridge this year for 3 weeks in June. Last year we did it for a month about the same part of the year. Had a great time. Some of the areas didn't have cell phone service and had to make sure you put stuff away at night because of bears. In one place we got visited twice in one night by bears. you have to be careful and they won't bother you. If you are 65 and above get your senior pass. You get into the parks free and government campgrounds are 1/2 price. A lot to see and do.

I landed in Charlottesville, toured Thomas Jefferson's place, and ended up staying two more days! That's because I stayed in Shenandoah, along the river, canoed on the river, then took the trail in the Shenandoah Valley in mid-late, October and saw the Fall colors. That was an amazing trip, and no doubt, the shoulder of Spring would have been equally enjoyable!

Great video Mark & Trish! Glad you were able to see a snippet of this beautiful state, as the drive from Front Royal (SD) all the way to Cherokee, NC by way of BLP is absolutely gorgeous, and full of side trip opportunities, many listed in below comments. Have driven it and camped on it many times by motorcycle. Lived here 24+ years just 20 mins from Skyline Dr (formerly from VT near Burlington and Lake Champlain), and still have not seen all this beautiful state has to offer. The VA state parks hosting RV camping are the best on the east coast (IMHO), and we have stayed in many in every state from here to FL. We are 4+ years of RV'ing now and itching to get out west to the Rockies and surrounding parks. Love watching your channel, and how the family interacts, and look forward to each episode! Please note at Devils Backbone, full hookups, the water and electric posts are every other site x2. Meaning, one site has the hookups on the back of a camper as normal, but then the next site will need to run water and electric under your camper and through your camp side and hookup to the back of the next camper's site. You NEED more than 20-25' of each. While I was told that we could borrow their backups, apparently people ruined it and didn't return them. They don't have extras, at least in 2021. We found an auto repair place in town who actually sells camping gear. They were out of stock of water hoses, so a run to Walmart which wasn't close. Now we're setup with an extension for the electrical cord and shorter water hose that has come in handy when not needing a 25' hose. But, if you don't have these beforehand / already, then expect a hour or two driving to hunt them down or you won't have full hookups there.

We were in Shenandoah today! Wish I had known about the Tunnel trail when we were near Staunton the last two weeks. We’re up by Luray now. Oh well, leave something to come back to! We loved Monticello!

Looks like a cool trail to hike. I love the Smokey Mountain part of the country. I love the videos every week and look forward to watching them every Monday morning. Y'all keep pushing them out and I'll keep watching them. Be safe and maybe I'll see y'all on the road sometime. I drive a truck so I'm always looking for y'all PS- I'm really glad to hear y'all still manage to go to church, even though y'all live on the road. That's something I always wondered about

Just saw that issue of Southern Living in the grocery store last week (Portland Oregon area) a d the wife was looking through it. Nothing for our area (obviously) but that's why there's Sunset Magazine. If you get to Central Oregon in the summer, McKenzie Pass is a wonderful drive with some great short hikes. Lots to do in and around the Bend-Sunriver area.

Every town I stay in for a couple days I hit up a Thai restaurant. 20 or so years ago I did the full length of the Blue Ridge on a motorcycle. Nice ride! The engine in my motorhome self destructed in Nebraska on I80. I'm "stuck" here for a few months waiting for a new engine. Trying to stay positive but this one is tough and hurts. Plus side there is a good Thai place close by.
