By far the best video i've seen on generator removal. Well explained, great camera work and lighting. Thanks to you, i'll be tackling this job and replacing my starter in the very near future. Ordering the parts today. Thank you! Subscribed.
Well done sir! Thank you for putting this video together. Outstanding idea using blocks of wood to safely bring down the Jenny. This will be my project for the weekend, I greatly appreciate the straight forward DIY. Cheers!
Fantastic instructional video on removing the generator, I just bought an 2009 RV, the generator works fine, just noticed the muffler seems a bit loose. Again great video, I just plan to use more cribbing to raise and lower the unit thanks!
great video. My generator has power at the solenoid input and no start, no clicks, no fault light at generator switch. Nothing. I suspect the solenoid. Or I was attacked by a rodent again. What do you think.
Great helpful video! Going a little deeper into the issues of flywheel stuck (bearing gone bad) or engine removal topics would be great. Again great work Thank you!
Excellent instructional video. Best I’ve seen on gen removal. I’m on a trip right now and my gen starter has failed. When I drop mine I think I’ll use a motorcycle lift in place of a floor jack. It only drops to 4 1/2” but that hopefully will suffice.
Nice detailed video. My generator just recently won't start. Checked the battery and it seems to be working just fine. Thinking some mice must've chewed on some wires in there as I've noticed there were some hay and such inside the nooks and crannies. Will have to open it up to find out if there were any obvious damage.
Great video. Liked and subbed. I’m good with small engines (mowers and Minibike’s) but this is new to me. Just got a second hand 20 year old RV and after hitting start, I just get some sort of struggling engagement noise. Looks like I’ll be pulling mine as well. I hope I get to the bottom of it soon.
another great video, thanks Richie. I am learning how to fix my QG4000 issue. I followed your previous videos and the other parts looks ok. now when I test the spark plug( the old one and also the new replaced one) I don't see the spark when push start, when measure the voltage( AC mode in multimeter), I see only couple hundreds mV . not sure what the issue behind, could be the coil ( but not sure where it is ) or the start rotor?( just learned from your video) . I am trying to seeking help online, but I don't have any experience of the generator repair before, your video is just right for me and very in detail and very informative. so in short, the issue seems to point to the power supply for the smart plug, what could be the most possible issue? thanks very much in advance.
THIS IS HOW I FIXED MINE, IN THE CASE OF.... "I CAN'T START MY GENERATOR" It's has been two years since last time it was running, so I started by checking oil level full at gen dipstick (it won't start if low oil because of sensors) then I checked gasoline more than 1\4 tank in the RV (also safety sensors), sparkplug checked for good spark, also checked the manual reset circuit braker ( to be ON) at front motorhome engine compartment for 12v current to the generator to be able to start it, also cleaned the carburetor and even installed new one but same situation, then checked wires and found some has been chewed like gum by rats at the back of starting switch generator panel so I replaced them, at this time the generator started but stay running only by keep pushing the switch on all the time, so then finally I knew it was internal electrical problem from the engine itself, so I took the generator out from my RV to work in my garage, (I did this by myself with some tools and old Mayan tricks ) lol, it's really heavy for one person. I disassemble the unit at my garage and started by removing the cover, then the cooling fan or flywheel unit (it's 2 items in one) until finally I was at the gen rotor and brushes assembly area and this is what I found: one more wire chewed by filthy rats plus the stinky rat nest in the middle of the generator motor coil, I fixed the wire and sanded the commutator copper contacts where the brushes are sitting becouse they were real duty with old urine from the rats, and of course I got rid off the stinky nest, lol!!! Then I assembled everything back together and... bingo it's runing like a champion!!! For this project materials involved was about $60.00 including an aftermarket new carburetor and an harmonic balancer/steering wheel puller (available at any auto parts for $25.00) to pull the aluminum fan out and (flywheel). Just picture this: (Any gasoline engine run smooth if gasoline and DC current aren't interrupted) so following this important principle you'll always find the problem to be fixed. Also if you have a onan microlite 4000 like mine, don't run it for more than a minute without the cover because you'll cook the engine real fast, also keep the eye on the aluminium fan and your fingers after cranking it in case you missing one or two members...just kidding, lol!!! After testing the gen then I did put the air cooling assembly back and the rest of components including the cover, now it's ready to be installed at my RV. Once the gen was installed back at my motorhome I started it to be tested for electric power but not before flipping the electric switch (on) at the gen starting control panel (sometimes hiding under or around the panel) to transfer power to my RV GFCI main outlet and electric panel as well, my motorhome it's equipped with GFCI so I reset it and tested for green led light indicating power is ready at my main breakers panel, so I turned my main breaker (on) along the others ones but no power was present at my breaker main switch (faulty main braker) so I flipped it many times, sometimes you can make it work again, mine did work, lol!!! I'm happy because everything works now including the ref for cold drinks and AC for this crazy summer, lol! Later I'll buy me a new main braker, for now this is a resurrected generator story that needed to be shared. If this can help eaven one person to save time and $$$ it'll make me more happy, thanks for reading!!!
wonder if you have any video of the other side that shows the coil and magneto. It looks like if I have the case off I should be able to replace them? Should it be doable? My RV is in the shop now and I can have them remove it ; I can bring it to my shop to work on. After I replace the coil I have no assurance it will solve my "no spark" problem. They replaced the carburetor already.
Hi there, I love the video. Thorough and awesome. One question though... you left the "big cable" connected as it was long enough to leave so. Ours is not however. There is no more than a few inches of spare cable. How would I disconnect this? At house end or generator end, and is this a live wire that needs any special handling? Thanks!
Good evening and thanks for the comment. The large cable is the you are talking about is the power cable from the generator to the house. As long as you are not plugged into shore power this should not be live (but always good to check with a multimeter before disconnecting) You would disconnect from inside the generator. Follow it in and you will see a Hot - Neutral and ground. Just disconnect them after testing they are not live and pull them to one side
Hi thanks for the comment. It was clicking when l press the start button which can usually mean 2 things. The solenoid or the starter. I already replaced the solenoid with a spare and it did not change anything , meaning the starter was broken jammed or seized.
My Onan 4 K generator wont crank. I can hear the solenoid click and there is power going into solenoid and out. Would this narrow it down to more than likely being the starter? Or is there something else I can do to test before replacing the starter?
Hi, It is recommended to disconnect the house batteries before dropping the generator, however if you wish to keep the house power on you can simply wrap the live cable (big fat red) with electrical tape. If you removing the generator completely and taking it away from the RV then you also need to make sure the 110v power is unplugged before disconnecting the 110v side on the generator.
what a great find, only wish i found your vid before taking the carb of my onan4k. any advice on how to install the gaskets/carb back on the generator? i think it is going to be a tough job.
Good evening, thanks for the comment, yes the gaskets are quite tricky to hold in place when putting the carb back on, also hold the choke open slightly to help so the butterfly valve is not in the way. Good luck
My generator starts fine but I have no electricity within the RV. This is the first time this has happened and I'm just trying to troubleshoot the problem
Hi, sorry for your problems, have you tried this ? A quick 2 minute video showing the Generator breaker ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CSXSZgDiOKM.html
