Not a glamorous topic, but a necessary one that most folks don't want to talk about. Thanks for sharing.

Kleen Tanks says no chemicals..water only done on a weekly rinse cycle. ‘Water is a tank’s friend’ They have a mix of Calgon Crystals and PineSol will keep the tanks clean. They advise that the chemicals create a septic tank vs a rv holding tank

We learned so much from Sue when we were there. Now that we have a new RV, we are expecting to use her tips to have our tanks stay clean for many years to come.

There was a guy who does that same thing she does. He said to NOT USE CHEMICALS. He said the black and gray are holding tanks, NOT septic tanks. He said using chemicals and breaking down what's in the tanks actually makes more of a mess and sticks to the sensors worse. He said use plenty of water and just flush with water. Thoughts on this?

Not true. So not dumping your tanks and letting the water sit over months will cause a problem. But a healthy tank is a love and active tank. The bacteria added isn’t chemicals. It’s bacteria. Keeping sufficient water, an active tank with bacteria, and weekly tank dumps with a refill of water keeps this tank cleaner.

Morning Todd and thank you Sue for helping, I think it's great that this can be such a controversial RV topic. In the comments we have the another service review mentioned, Jim from Kleen Tank in a review he did and we end up with the "He Said She Said" debate, so the real question might be "when does your holding tank become a septic tank?" Time at rest is the determining factor, enzymes & bacteria take time to work and that's Septic tank. A holding tank gets emptied on a regular basis, like once a week or so, I think that by week two it's turning into a septic tank, and by week three it's a septic tank. It becomes a real septic tank when it doesn't get emptied and sits for a month or two until the RV is used again for the simple reason it's a job that some people won't do until it's absolutely necessary. It takes quite a bit of water to flush these tanks, and some of them are just a poor design of a box with a dump valve in the side, if you look at older RV blank tanks you'll see most of them are shaped to funnel or flow to the dump valve. So here's my conclusion, if the smell bothers you for the short time you're dealing with it at the dump station, add a scented treatment. And just like at home, when you're a poopin' turn on the fan, if that doesn't work get a better fan installed. I don't understand why the manufactures have installed such a little corner fan in the roof vent, they're noisy an inefficient. At the end of your RV season, if you're not a full timer, either get it serviced or flush the heck out of your tank yourself. There are more of these RV black tank service companies getting into the service market, so for those concerned about it, they can have it serviced rather easily now.

hello from the windy wet ozarks Todd! i use dish washer disks in both tanks filled with boiling hot water and let it rest half hr and drain and chase it with hot water till clear, usally 10minutes. i run my inspection camera into tank and inside looks like new. Glad Sue is in the Royal Flush rv business and doing great. my concern if the boiling hot water damages any seals. the dishwasher disks are made for dishwasher with seals. i still use the unique tank cleaner. tight lines!

How do you retrieve these samples? Doesn't it go down the sewer hose too fast.

Do you recommend using chemicals in the tank? I've seen another guy that cleans tanks who says to not use any chemicals...

Question: Wouldn't a filtration system prevent "sand" from getting into the system if you are on well water? And, if sand is ending up in your tanks, what damage could one see in the water lines (water system) in general?

When dumping my black tank,I back wash it until I don't see anything coming out. Then I'll dump pails of water down the toilet three or four times. We also pour the dish rinse water into the black tank. But I would like to know is there a way I could flush the gray tank out.

You could get a camco dual flush pro. It let's you put water back into the tank. Just make sure you use a water flow meter so you don't over fill!
