Here, I replace the electric bathroom fan and vent system as well as a plumbing vent. When something needs replacement, I always go for OEM. The screw holes line up so I don't have to drill new holes. It makes the job a lot easier than retrofitting knock-offs.

I never thought about those caulking cut outs. Better than new job!.

FullTime LiveAboard I've seen it done on bathroom remodel video's. They must do it at the factory on rv's too. How else would they get the caulk lines so perfect?

Good point. I just assumed the new RV's were done with some kind of application machine. I've got the travel trailer along with the van, so I watch alot of roof repair related videos. Super paranoid about roof leaks in the trailer. Just had never seen your method used before. It's a great technique. I enjoy your videos. Thanks.

FullTime LiveAboard I think for travel trailers with vinyl roofs, a product called "Decor self-leveling" is used instead of the GeoCell I use.

Xplorer Steve Exactly. Mine is a sheet of aluminum rolled over some thin plywood. Twice a year I'm up there with a soft brush, rags,acetone and Dicor self leveling, praying I don't miss any cracks or small holes :)

I can confirm the hard foam insulation is throughout the entire rig. (pop a ceiling light off and you'll see it there). Only downside to that...especially for me, is you can forget about running new wires through the roof for anything. My number one rule for upgrades and additions is it must be clean and factory looking, no wires visible, so I tap into anything exisiting and run wires through cabinets and such.

***** Yes. I have to find a way run the wire for the new solar. The old wire is too thin for efficiency.

Xplorer Steve depends on the wattage. I was told a maximum 100-120 watter for that size wire and since I was planning on splitting it into two panels front and back it worked out. Also the one you got is a bit larger and wouldn't fit on my roof due to my fireplace vent and my AC has an air intake on the top of roof. For a 160 watt I'd run new wiring as well. Through the cabinets obvs!

***** Yes, I was thinking the same thing (cabinets). I was also going to remove one of the vinyl covered panels with the button looking things on them. You know what I'm talking about? They are present throughout the van. I'm thinking they are access panels. Have you ever removed one?

Looks better than the pro's do, they leave the caulking in a globby mess. As I said before, you work/replacements have been impeccable! Take care and safe travels my friend, Blessings!

I would basically be doing the same thing you are doing. RVing out from a home base. Going to find an RV or Van and just tinker and fix thigs like you are doing and head out on little adventures. I like the channel Steve.

Request Corner:.. Hey Steve, Can you do a segment on improving gas economy and making your '99 Dodge RAM Xplorer more aerodynamic and other methods to improve MPG? (Maybe a joint-RU-vid project with Happily Houseless!) I found folks (youtube) filling gaps in body exterior using home depot bargain basic weatherstripping, so air doesn't get behind the gaps that create drag. Also curious if under body plastic panels (like in modern cars) could be adapted to the RAM van undercarriage to streamline airflow? I'm sure there are some other tips out there? I like this era class B Xplorer and I would consider these improvement for MPG savings for when I finally own one!. However, I don't have one in my driveway just yet, so I can only suggest...Ha! Thanks for your videos!
@XplorerSteveDIY
@XplorerSteveDIY 9 лет назад
Kevin Shea Sorry, I won't be addressing MPG concerns. I think that if that's your thing, all the suggestions you mentioned are worth some thought. I've learned the value of hyper-milling on the road whether it is in a car, but especially on a bike. That's as far as I am willing to take it. Simplify that one more step and it comes down to driving below 65 and using big rigs to improve your "aerodynamic efficiency". Take care.

Those "straight" connectors are called butt splices and should be crimped with an electric connector crimper.
@XplorerSteveDIY
@XplorerSteveDIY 8 лет назад
Yes. I have a special way since I don't have a crimper.

Nice job....finish looks great. I would suggest using crimping players not adjustable jaw players to squeeze your electrical splices. I like the high leverage ones made by Klein Tools. www.kleintools.com/catalog/crimpingcutting-tools/crimpingcutting-tool-non-insulatedinsulated-connectors
@XplorerSteveDIY
@XplorerSteveDIY 9 лет назад
Terry Landis I've developed a way to crimp using those same pliers every time. I fold one side of the opening in ,then the other. It grabs the wire real tight. If I think of it next time I am in the tool store, I will look at those Kleins. I try to stay away from any tool store or section though. Too dangerous for me...haha. Thanks for the tip.
