great vid! great points all. As a firearms instructor, i agree that situational awareness is super important....in fact it is the most important tool in your self-defense toolbox.

I have a very large Great Dane male that has a bark the will rattle the windows. So I tape him when he was in protect mode one day and have the tape tied to a motion sensor. The sensor will kick out if anyone touches the rv. Yes it is that sensitive. The down side, when I open the door it makes me jump!!
@DattaGroover

Great idea! What is the name of the sensor?

EXCELLENT reminders of some simple things to do for safety. You both make excellent video presentations. THANK YOU for doing them and sharing on RU-vid, it's appreciated.

Electrical disconnect along with disabling our hydraulic slides saved us from more damage and theft than what we sadly experienced. Great video!! The motion light is a great idea. I mounted ours to the upper fridge vent which covers the entire (most vulnerable side) of our camper and keeps it high enough it can't be tampered with. The vent was easy to remove for mounting the light. Also, when storing your RV, I've seen those that are covered often don't get broken into as often as those that are uncovered, sitting out in the open. It's almost as if out of sight is out of mind. And the cover helps project the RV from UV and weather, too. Great topic and thanks for sharing!

Great advice. Indeed, being aware of your surroundings is important. If you are in a campground, be aware of people who do not belong there. If someone is in a car and just hanging out, they are very possibly staking out the place, looking for opportunities...

Great Info... we have a great camera security system for RV's , the cameras mount flat and wide angle view... great for RVs and cottages... Triggering an alarm is also essential, the motion sense lights are awesome to let people know the unit is likely alarmed and stay away...

I don't own an RV but I like to watch RV videos. WOW, I would have never thought of all this stuff. But you're right, it is like a house and should be treated as such when it comes to safety and security.

Ideas I hadn't considered before, thanks! This makes me sad though. It used to be there was sort of a code among campers where you just didn't mess with stuff. We leave our pop-up trailer unlocked except for hitch and baggage locks and we can leave things out around camp and nothing has ever been taken. Now I suspect that was just good luck and we ought to be smarter.

In a perfect world........................In most cases, when a vehicle alarm goes off, most everyone just ignores it. I replaced that CH751 lock with a couple of eye bolts and a long shank pad lock. Those doors are too easy just to pry open.

TIP: Place a sign on your RV to indicate the number and type of animals onboard PLUS your cell phone numbers in case someone needs to reach you while you are away from the RV. We made a "CAT ONBOARD" sign with our numbers, and placed it in the windshield. PS: If your travels bring you to South America, we have plenty of room for guests in Ecuador!

Everyone should add a Spot Trace satellite tracker and have it well hidden. These trackers do not depend on cell service and will update your RVs position every five minutes. If you have a web site where people can track your travels the Spot Trace can be used to keep it updated in real time.

I see a lot of suggestions on here about "buy a gun". That's fine, I have no problem with that, but if you are going to own a firearm, please get some kind of training. There are all kinds of courses out there, some very cheap, even the NRA Basic Pistol course. Anyone who is in the RV with you and has access to those firearms also needs training. Keep in mind that many states require you to keep firearms unloaded and in a locked container where the driver and occupants do not have access, except in the case that you have a concealed carry permit. Know the gun laws of the states you travel through.

If you travel across state lines you must be aware of local and state gun laws ( what is legal in one state or town is not always legal in the next town or state)

I would like to also add that I keep the original files, somewhere else, off-site. And put what I can in a Internet cloud so that if a fire would happen I could easily reprint what I needed. I also make copies of almost everything so that I can use the copies and leave the originals that are in the trailer safely stored away. (Sometimes you have to use the originals because certain companies will only deal with the original manuscript) A fireproof box would be also very good. I have a handgun and a shotgun both at my fingertips, well maybe not that close.

@ Roads Un-traveled I am wondering about the comment you made regarding your handgun and shotgun. How do you handle the reciprocity laws from state to state? Since each state is different and all states do not honor Permits issued from another state. I have been thinking about this a lot and your comment is the first I have seen someone talk about this. I live in PA and I have a CCW permit to carry a weapon and I do carry every day.
@jennysimpson2996
@jennysimpson2996 6 лет назад
Edwin Mease There are classes you can take that cover several states that have reciprocal agreements with additional states in addition to what Penn. has. I got the OR., AZ., and UT. To go with my home state. It is not cheap, so shop around. Hope this is helpful.

You guys are in the Olympics? Your so close to the family and I. I love the idea of the motion sensor light. But one of my security techniques, silence. Don't tell people what you have so thieves can steal from you. The 2nd technique, my wife has a CCW and believe me when this retired infantryman says, MY WIFE CAN SHOOT! :)

Thanks for all your videos. I have an Andersen Ultimate 5th Wheel hitch. Sorry that I didn't buy it from you but I purchased it before I had even heard of Morton Trailer Supply. I am curious what you do to lock your Andersen king pin coupler? None of the traditional king pin locks will work. I contacted Andersen and they suggested a Fort Knox lock. It does fit but costs $175 plus the puck lock for $32 puts this at over $200. Ouch!!! Another suggestion is that the Andersen hitch is so unique that almost no-one can hitch to it anyway so just go without. Not sure that I like either the $0 solution or the $200 solution. Thoughts?

Get pepper spray and if that is not legal to own, get and store handy larger and pocket sized aerosol bottles of Deet or other nasty bug repellent. The police can not view it as an illegal weapon and can not ticket you or confiscate it but it can be used as a very effective pepper spray alternative. Depending on the size of the bottle/can it can be used in the cab or on your person. Also use a steering lock on the wheel (you know the kind which has a long section coated in rubber and a grip for the wheel) BUT keep the lock next to the seat when on the road. If for some reason somebody tries to get physical with you you have a means of defending yourself (these locks pack a nasty punch if swung correctly - do practise this before hand...). As with the Deet bottles: a steering lock is not uncommon to have sitting next to the seat while on the road and can not be viewed as an illegal object like a baseball bat or a batton does. Me personally have been in the situation where I was very glad I had the Deet sprayer (a larger bottle which I souped up a bit with some extra compressed air added through the normal nozzle so it could not be proven I did so, modifying a sprayer bottle for the purpose to use it (also) as a weapon can get you into trouble if the modification(s) are obvious) to repel somebody who wanted to have an in depth conversation on the road conditions with me, which I was obviously not very keen on having. So I met him with the bottle and a short burst of things to come if he insisted with the debate. Needles to say he left (me alone)

golfnut its actually been just fine, our rig is wired and ducted for a second one but we have never felt we needed it. We try to avoid temperatures that warrant using it but it has kept us comfortable in 100 plus when it can't be avoided. Being a mobile suites our rig has thicker walls and all dual pane UV blocking windows that probably helps keep the heat out. , we also pull the shades when it's really hot to keep the direct sun out.

A marine or sports air horn is a fantastic tool to add to your security arsenal. In addition to scaring the would be thief away it alerts your neighbours and most importantly keeps you out of physical reach of the thug.

"brake locks" are not a good thing as they do tend to leak down, and provide a couple points for possibly deadly leaks of fluid. as to bikes and such. keep them inside (with locks on them) when not in use, not hanging outside. far safer. also keep your shades CLOSED, things tend to be far safer if a crook does not know they are there. also record ALL serial numbers, if none on said item buy a electrical engraver and make a number yourself..also record said info. keep the book in duplicate and in two completely different safe places. think videos and photos of ALL items not just valuables. night lights on the outside of the rv. got cameras? they are very cost effective these days. just do not buy the trash cheap ones as the video is pure junk. and review all the time to know if your rv is being checked out. and by whom.
