We've been winter RVing in freezing temperatures for four years now...and in three different RVs. Here we share our tips and trick that we've learned over the years of winter RVing in freezing and sub-zero temperatures.
If you plan to winter RV watch this video and read our blog post on Winter RVing for updates and tips to keep you warm and your RV running!

Excellent video, Jason. What a great idea using snow as insulation! Never thought of that. Another great tip is leaving the sewer and water lines disconnected except when needed to avoid all the expense and effort of insulating and/or heating the lines. Since we were in one spot all winter one year, we heat-taped the fresh water line and left the sewer line connected. But when the temperature dropped very far below freezing, we kept the gray valve closed. We'd then dump the gray tank every few days and then re-close the valve, which kept the sewer hose from freezing solid. Since the sewer hose was already in place, it only took a few seconds to dump (extra handy when you're as cold-averse as we are). ;-) Speaking of sewer lines, we see in the video that you're using the technique we suggested for combining the black and gray into one big tank by fitting an external Valterra gate valve to the sewer outlet. How is that working out so far? Have you had a chance to try out the off-loading of gray water up into the black tank by pulling the black & gray valves simultaneously? Would love to hear! Thanks for the great video, as always, Jason!

Hey Geeks, While Fleetwood was installing our composting toilet I asked the lead technician about combining and he said "in theory it should work perfectly". So we've been doing it for a month almost non-stop and it works great. We'll update more when we film the composting toilet updates this month...and we'll make sure you give you the credit :) Enjoy the desert!

Gone with the Wynns That is awesome! I was hoping it would work as well as it seemed in theory and so happy to hear that it does. Can't wait to see! :)

Love your vids! Lots of great tips. We boondock in temps well below freezing. Below zero at times. Using a cataleptic propane heater produces tons of moisture. So we stopped using them. But the forced air furnace has external vent combustion. So it doesn't produce any internal moisture. Happy Camping!

Great tips Jason! What a beautiful day there. Loved the snow skirt idea by the way. On our first ever RV trip as newbies, we woke up in the mountains to snow, icicles, and a frozen water hose. It took a hair dryer to unscrew the hose. Then I hung the hose in our shower to thaw as we drove down out of the mountains.

My best tip for preparing for winter in a motor home is to drive to the nearest odd numbered interstate and then turn right!

Great video. Your advice seems perfect if you are hunkering down in one spot for awhile. We RV in the west where thing Chang equivalent. Yesterday in Moab, we were trying to cool the RV in the afternoon, then trying to heat it in the evening, and Friday we are traveling again. Our winter RV techniques reflects our mobility.

Haha, thanks, those cats were cracking me up lol. You might want to mention, only hold water in holding tanks if they are heated, otherwise they may freeze in severe extended storms.

You can actually get an electric resistance heater for your sewage and clean water tanks that is adhesive and will keep your tanks from freezing might be safer than a space heater. They work just like heat tape.

Delighted to see your new vids on this morning! (we are new subscribers). We've recently been taking the "RV Movement" seriously and have been watching many videos on Y-T - yours by far are the best in terms of professionalism and clarity (doesn't hurt to have an ultra-pretty wife starring either). Please keep up the "Tips & Tricks" types, they are very much appreciated by the newbies! With the recent -41 temps we've had, it's not likely we'll be headed anywhere (else!) snow packed for awhile but, mebbe see you on the road sometime! THANKS!! Jim (& Cindy) @ Mid-Ohio

I love that you travel with your cats and in you videos I see them walking around free outside, how do you train them to stay close? I am scared my pet will run off or I won't be able to find her, also on one of your videos you mentioned you were trying to figure out a way to turn the pet lookout window into a pet door so they could come and go? How will that work? I love you guys and the info you put out. Thanks!

Jason, great job! I too camp all winter (and have made posts on my RV site to share what I've learned.) A quick technical question - how did you get such great audio in this presentation? Are you using a wireless mic of some type? Al

do you guys run your ac tank area heaters while you're mobile? if so do you just plug them into your inverter? are 12v ceramic heaters any good? I want to live in an rv all year round, but Canadian winters is a real fear for me, and I don't plan on staying stationary for more than a few days a month.

When you said you run your diesel block heater in extreme temperatures, did you mean for a few hours before running or all the time? It's only needed for before you start the engine on a cold day
@gonewiththewynns

Check out our post: www.gonewiththewynns.com/winterize-rv We received very specific directions from both Cummins and Fleetwood about the engine block pre-heat.

Jason, what is your opinion on tire covers ?

Both Monaco and Fleetwood say they are a crock! So we've never purchased them. Same goes for wiper covers, etc.
