Points Systems, OK, if your staying in motels, don't many of them have points you earn? You will start getting discounted or free rooms after a enough points are accumulated. Same with Fuel Cards of the different brands. You will start getting fuel discounts after a while. I also hear if you use Truck stops, you will earn free meals, showers and discounted Fuel as well. If you use a Credit cards for expenses, there are points systems on some of those as well. You can make back some of your money from thes points plans.
If you’re discouraged by this video don’t be. He’s spending $4-6,000 / month just on a truck rental and hotels. The truck rental program he’s talking about is through Enterprise but it’s meant for hotshots. They can gross a lot more than RV transport and they deadhead way less. Also staying in hotels regularly isn’t an option. You have to buy a truck and sleep in the back. Additionally with fuel prices as they are, you need a generator to run heat and AC while you sleep because idling the truck uses a lot more fuel than you’d expect.
When I do the numbers based on having my own truck at the current rate minimum of $1.20 mi. Fuel at $2.30 average. $250 week truck payment. $100 week insurance. .10 mi. For all mi. for maintenance fund. And 2500-3000 loaded mi. I would net around $1300 week. The one question that nobody gives an answer to is what do you consider good money?
Ben there only way i can say it is screw all of that. Worked harder than ever at a factory job usually 20 hrs overtime still didn't make anything like this could.
I suppose I’d add that if you’re not willing to sleep in the truck say…….3 days out of 4 (or thereabouts), then don’t do single-haul. Or traditional hotshot. And unless you’re mostly driving ‘loaded’ (i.e. most of your miles involve ‘cargo’ and getting paid), then renting a vehicle is a bad idea. You’re getting charged for EVERY mile…..not just loaded miles. This video really hammers that home.
Hello Josh, hope your doin well & staying safe, been following you for awhile & very interested in the r v industry either with RV Transport or Horizon Transport, any advise or info would be very much appreciated, safe travels brother.
Dude. The hotels are KILLING you. As-is the rental. You brought up a good point which would apply to single-haul. You’re paying that damned .22-cents/mile when you’re driving back to Indiana empty as well--not just when you’re hauling. So it sounds like you made about $5000 for 8000-miles……but you’re paying rent for all 8000 miles. THAT’S gotta hurt!
Whelp I’m about 2yrs too late on the comment😂. Money makes almost everyone happy, that being said I think ya would’ve enjoyed the job a lot more if took the necessary steps needed to save money.
FYI, you can get a pilot card (or Loves card), fuel there and earn an occasional free shower. Even if you have to pay most days, it would be way cheaper than a hotel room every night... You might be able to get your company to allow you to do lease tripping so you can get back hauls. Failing that, try to get your own authority and run their freight outbound and YOUR freight back in? 🤷🏻♂️ If none of that will work, move on. 😂
So I'm curious as I haven't seen anyone say this and I'm wanting to get into RV transport with my F350 Dually. Question is this, you take an RV to drop off for Company A, but Company A doesn't have a back load, but an other RV company does, can you work for multiple RV companies or do they have Non compete Claus when you get hired?
Hey, I have a 3500 Dudley and have my own 43 foot rv.(travel nursing) what’s your thoughts on LLC and part time pulling 1-2 days a week for truck right off and making a little extra cash.
You're spending your money on hotels and eating out all the time, plus on a rental truck no wonder you're not making money what where you expecting!! If you manage you could be making money!!
Did you set up a separate company, such as an LLC, to transport RV's. So you would take your gross revenue less your deductible expenses = net income less interest on your truck and depreciation = Taxable income.
Easiest way is to figure out how much you will make instantly.. on a single load, or a week, or month.. is to figure out what your vehicles operating cost is.. per mile. Once you do that, everything can be calculated in a per mile rate.
I am 23 years old drive a semi. Looking into hot shot but came across this a few months back and starting looking into it more. And your video is very helpful man. Thanks for the numbers. Gained a new subscriber. Best video explaining this and very clear understanding. Safe travels.
Don't take this the wrong way cause I was hired by them and decided to just run pilot car instead. I make $1.35 a mile at that and they pay perks and over night's. I can't understand how you're able to make money at the rate they are paying.
These types of jobs, including Uber, food delivery, etc only work if you have an old-ish vehicle where the depreciation curve is flat. If you have a newer truck the depreciation alone will kill any chance at a profit. With an older truck there will be more maintenance/ repair but there's that sweet spot where the truck is still in good shape but the depreciation is not much. I think somewhere around 100K miles truck that has been well maintained is where this can work. Also counting food as an expense? No matter what you do for a living you will buy food. Granted if you're eating at a restaurant 3 times a day then yeah that is expensive. But you don't have to do that. Travel with a cooler and prepare some meals ahead of time. You can always use a microwave at travel stops to warm them up. Or plan ahead and get a hotel room with a kitchen a few nights during a run and cook some meals there.
Hey Josh, I'd like to clear up a mistake. You said you figure $1.32 per mile on this 8000 mile trip. I think you meant to say $1.32 per Loaded mile. The dead head miles have to be counted in overall cost since your paying rental, fuel, food and lodging for all miles traveled. So your making about $.62 to $.65 a mile based on fuel milage loaded and unloaded. The Drive-a-way couple you mentioned have the right idea. Even if one person does it with a economy car it seems better than towing. Thanks for your info and thank you for your service to our country.
The magic number is $2.65 a mile. You are making less than minimum wage. You can't bend the $1.35 a mile to make it work. I have been running out here alot of years. I dont work for free.
Not trying be mean your staying in hotel and renting a truck .wonder why your not making money there's all money period . Get your own truck stay out hotels
