While Mount Rushmore is the most well-known attraction in the Black Hills of South Dakota, there are lots of great things to see and do here. We just scratched the surface on this easy, one-day scenic drive.
Although Yellowstone National Park is probably the most famous place to see bison (buffalo), Custer State Park has one of the largest publicly-owned herds in the world, roaming freely throughout the park and often stopping traffic along the the road.
Connecting Custer State Park and Mount Rushmore National Memorial, the Iron Mountain Road is a work of art in itself. The highway passes through some of the most beautiful scenery in the Black Hills and includes three tunnels that frame Mount Rushmore in the distance. The road is famous for its "Pigtail Bridges" that allow travelers to gain or lose elevation quickly.
The Needles Highway is a spectacular drive through pine and spruce forests, meadows surrounded by birch and aspen and rugged granite mountains. Completed in 1922, the road's name comes from the needle-like granite formations you'll see along the way. It also has the longest, and coolest, tunnel!
Of course we visit Mount Rushmore National Memorial too, as no trip to the area would be complete without experiencing this amazing site up close. We hike the easy 6/10-mile Presidential Trail for stunning views almost directly beneath the granite faces.
This is only the beginning of the spectacular scenery in the Black Hills. For the more adventurous, be sure to visit Wind Cave National Park and Harney Peak if you have more time to spend in this beautiful part of the world.
We stayed in one of the many full-hook-up commercial RV parks in the area, but there are lots of State Park and National Forest campgrounds to choose from as well.
If you haven't yet visited the Black Hills, maybe this quick snapshot of the area will inspire you to add it to your must-see list. The admission price to the Custer State Park is well worth it!

We just got back from our first trip to South Dakota. My wife and I loved it there. Hope to get back soon. We stayed at the KOA near Keystone and at French Creek in Custer. Both were great.

Brings back memories. When I was there I video-taped a large tour bus (as big as a Class A MH)coming through that narrow tunnel at Needles. After the bus finallymade it through with barely inches to spare the driver rolled down his window and asked, "Is this the way to Mt. Rushmore?". Got a big laugh from everyone.. of course I told him no, he would have to turn around and go back the other way.

Hi Jim. Thanks for the nice comments. We stayed in Heartland RV Park, just south of Hermosa. It's a Passport America park, so our membership got us 1/2 off. It had long, wide big-rig pull-throughs, full hook-ups and solid 50-amp service. We also saw other commercial parks in the Custer area along with a lot of National Forest campgrounds too. We'd suggest touring Wind Cave National Park while you're in the area. Happy Travels!

Went there 3 years ago. For sure bucket list of places to go. Wife did field trip in Rapid City. Made 2 weeks of it. Badlands good to go Not too far west from there is devil's canyon and stretched it out to go to Yellowstone. Will never forget what I saw and did. BTW worth spending the money to get Annual National Park pass. Save money and vip at the gates/ parking.

DO what you can to see as much as you can. There are so many grand things to see in this country away from civilization. I HAVE BEEN LUCKY as a trick driver to see much of America. I am blessed to live off the mighty Mississippi River. See our national bird ( bald eagle). Among other things in nature . Something to see the skies filled with birds. Migration. Take care.

Before we visited that tunnel in person, we saw a video exactly like you're describing... an MCI motorcoach inching through. I used to drive an MCI (in New York City) and after seeing the tunnel, I was amazed that a driver would ever bring a bus up there. Still not sure how it fit! lol

Love the video! Heading out that way for the first time in June. Renting an RV and going to Grand Titon's, Yellowstone, Devil's Tower, Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Jewel Cave, Badlands, Custer Park, and Rocky Mt Natl Park. Should take the better part of a few days.... Was going to try to take the RV down the road shown - but thinking better of it. Will rent a mini-van and do it that way - along with Needles Hwy. Cannot wait!

It's actually quicker for us to get to the Rockies (Denver) than it is to the Hills from our home in eastern Nebraska, but we've stayed in Custer about eight times now. We just got back a couple of weeks ago, and love it every time. If you go, drive Needles highway and Iron Mtn. road. Great scenery any time of day. And then hike the trails around Sylvan Lake. And, visit Jewel Cave NM and Wind Cave NP and Badlands NP and Custer State Park and.... You will not regret this vacation.

Nice video, but you missed the best location and view. Crazy Horse Monument (mentioned briefly in a road sign shown) dwarfs Mount Rushmore and is really spectacular. They also do not take, and have taken, any federal money. I've been there twice and will take Crazy Horse over Rushmore in a heartbeat. It should be possible to see Crazy Horse and the other sites in this video in the same trip.

Of course the video is helpful, if not for the video then those with a large RV wouldn't know in advance there are places you can't go. There are MANY places a larger RV can't go, that is a fact, therefore you plan your trip accordingly. There is always the option to write to your state & fed recreational dept and request they drill out a little more rock so the opening is wide enough for you and other larger RV's. I found their video very enlightening -THANKS FOR SHARING RV Geeks !

Somewhere along Rapid Creek which flows eastward from the Black Hills through Rapid City, Crazy Horse was born. Idyllic Sylvan Lake is where Crazy Horse experienced his vision. If you're looking to see both Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse monument, definitely see Mount Rushmore first, otherwise, Mount Rushmore just seems puny.

I was very disappointed in Mt Rushmore. They view at 1:37 is about what you first see and it is small. Most of the photos are taken with telephoto lenses so the heads look very big, but when you see them in person they look small.
@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 4 года назад
ziggy 2shus The greatest place to get up close and personal with Mt Rushmore is by walking the 6/10th-mile Presidential Trail, which takes you right under the faces, giving wonderful views from all different angles. We show that at 2:08 and it’s our favourite place to view the presidents.

@@RVgeeks i saw the old Cary Grant movie (North by Northwest?) where he was climbing all over the heads at Mt Rushmore. I was disappointed to find out that climbing on the heads was forbidden. Apparently the shots of Grant climbing on the heads was done in a movie studio.

I know, it's exactly the trip we'll be taking this coming summer. However, we will have our Class C and no other transportation. We already know what's there (there are dozens of vids on that) and that we want to see it. What we NEED to know is how to get around in the camper. Thanks for getting back to me, but I still have no idea how to travel between these 3 attractions. I guess I'll figure it out when we get there since all of the information available is how you CAN'T get around. Maybe I'll make a video for my channel to inform RVers on available routing. :)
