In this video Jay shares his experience for changing out an existing RV domestic fridge for a residential one. We swapped the existing fridge for one with the exact same dimensions. This means there was not cabinetry or carpentry work required. The new Magic Chef resident fridge fit in the same space, but has almost double the interior cubic footage. This is a super easy install that anyone can do.

Thank you for clarifying the ventilation issue and how you resolved it. Had read in comments of another video on the subject with other RV'ers replacing with this same fridge and someone saying that instructions stated the sides needed a 4" clearance and asking how to resolve it. We're fixing to replace our dometic with a residential fridge so I want to make a good decision and know all the potential problems. This information is helpful!

We certainly don't have 4 inches on the sides, but after taking the insulation out we did not have any further issues.

It was hands down the best upgrade we did in our RV, and we did a lot. In hind sight I do wish I have filled this video as a full step by step how to, instead of just an overview. But there are some other ones out there. It was so much easier than I thought it would be.

Great editing! I especially loved the grab-a-tool “collage”! Question: did Jay have to make a second Home Depot run or has the streak broken? (Also thank you for the first Inverter explanation I have ever understood!”) Have a wonderful week!

I just put in the Magic Chef 10.1 cu.ft. (Mod.# FFET1022UV) into my RV. the fridge is 59 1/2 " tall, 26" deep (that is right out to the front of the doors which have to stick out 2" so they can swivel open.) and 24" wide.

Jay, have you had any issues with the fridge doors flying open during travel? I’m feed up with my Dometic RM3962 absorption fridge. I’m considering switching as well. Great video!

No, because we installed a secondary lock on the door. That is my one regret from this video is that I forgot to talk about that. If look by my hand when I start to review around the 8:35 mark you can see the lock by my left hand. It is a black "T" style lock and it works great. I got it off amazon. I actually just completed the exact same swap. We pull a 44' bunkhouse which just like you, houses a tribe with endless appetites. The same 10.1 CF fridge is the bomb! My question to you is, what did you do to improve the latching function of both doors so they will not open while you are traversing? This has not been an issue for me yet, but I know it will. I would like to head this off before the day comes that I open the door to the trailer only to find eggs, mustard and Mayo everywhere!!! I look forward to your input. Thank you. RB

Great info...But I have a question on the doors. Stock they just have the magnet to hold them. I SEE that you got a door lock on yours. Where did you get it??? Does Home Depot have them ??? I was just up there today and they have the frigs in stock. We have a 2012 Rockwood TT and the Dometic PTL is still running, but for the size I want to up grade it this summer. Thanks Doug
@FindYourCrazy
@FindYourCrazy Год назад
Yes, you have to put a latch on it as the regular door seals will not withstand travel days. We got ours on amazon, but I just did a quick search and it is not available on there any longer. However, there are several other options there, and I found the one we purchased on another website here: www.recpro.com/rv-refrigerator-door-latch/

We have installed our residential fridge and want to only plug in the fridge just like you did. Did you just run the extension cord back to the back of the fridge and plug the fridge directly into it? And when you get to your site, you turn off the inverter via the remote on/off switch and it automatically works off the converter without unplugging from the extension cord that goes to the inverter? I hope I asked that correctly. And thanks for explaining this clearly for us. Great job!
@FindYourCrazy
@FindYourCrazy 2 года назад
You did. I did this video as an overview, but now realize I really should have done a detailed video. To answer your question. Yes I just ran a regular extension cord to the fridge. I was lucky and my inverter/battery are right beside my propane tanks and the fridge is obviously right beside the oven. So I literally just zip tied my extension cord along the pipe that ran between them. Then the only semi hard part was drilling a hole up through the floor. it was only a hassle because the bottom of the kitchen slide is actually a dual floor with about a foot between them. So I had to drill up, line up the holes, drill down, then fish the cord through with a wire coat hanger. But after that it was a breeze. You don't have to turn the inverter on and off. Actually you can't, it will kill power to the fridge. But when you plug up to shore power it just feeds the battery that feeds the inverter which feeds the fridge. So all is good, the power takes care of itself. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any more questions.

@@FindYourCrazy Thank you for your detailed explanation! We don't have a slide so I feel for when you had to drill those particular holes but glad it worked out for y'all.

How is the fridge holding up. We full time in our RV an installed one May of 2022. Did you attach any mounting hardware on the top?
@FindYourCrazy
@FindYourCrazy 2 года назад
The fridge had held up great. We installed it about a year and a half ago and have been nothing but happy with it. I did not us any mounting hardware anywhere on it. Mine fit really snuggly into my opening, side to side. The only thing that I did was I put a couple of screws in the bottom back once I got it lined up and leveled. I just drilled then through the metal plate in the back into the wood flooring.

Interesting video but.... How many Ah are you running for batteries and, of course solar panels? I have tried this with a small counter top fridge and the batteries lasted about 2 hours before being completely dead.
@FindYourCrazy
@FindYourCrazy 2 года назад
I can't find my sheet right now where I have all the exact numbers written down. But I only have one regular old lead acid car battery and I have no solar panels. But this was not an issue for us. Because of our large family we very rarely boondocked without power. So all we needed from the battery was to run the fridge on travel days. I let it run completely out a couple of times just to see how long it would last and my one little battery was able to run the fridge and a few LED lights for around 14hours. But again our normal travel day was only 4-6 hours so we had all the power we needed.
@akwamarsunzal
@akwamarsunzal 2 года назад
@@FindYourCrazy Yeah, boondocking is the issue! To run a fridge like that is going to take a whole ton of batteries and panels. Our 220Ah AGM battery with 200w solar will not last a day on a fridge like that.

A bit bummed I can't find a fridge that matches the hole of my Dometic fridge. I can only fit a fridge 50.5" tall and they're either around 55" or 46".
@FindYourCrazy
@FindYourCrazy 2 года назад
That is a bummer. But mine was a few inches short on top as well. I stuffer some insulation in the gap and was good. You could also get a piece of trim at the hardware store and cover the gap.

So, the fridge wasn't always upright during shipment in the truck and it was layingon the ground during the door install...and it still works?
@FindYourCrazy
@FindYourCrazy 2 года назад
Yes. No problems. The general rule is to let the fridge stand back upright for the same amount of time that it was on it's side before you plug it in. The problem is that the oil in the compressor will leak out into the compressor lines and possible clog them. Setting it back up gives the oil time to leak back. I do know that there are some models of fridge that cannot be on their side ever because of the type of brackets that are used to hold the compressor. But this was not one of those.

@@FindYourCrazy I've been driving an 18 wheeler for 20 years. I haul appliances all the time. The fridge factory lays fridges down on the sides all the time during shipping. It doesn't damage the fridge. If it did they wouldn't load the trucks that way.

No. One of my biggest regrets from this video is that the part about the lock was lost on the editing floor (ie I forgot to put it in). We purchased a lock on amazon that we use to secure the door when we travel.

Sorry, looks like they no longer carry it through Amazon. I can't find the model number but I think any 10.1 cubic foot combo model will work. Here is the link to the one we used through home depo. www.homedepot.com/p/Magic-Chef-10-1-cu-ft-Top-Freezer-Refrigerator-in-Black-HMDR1000BE/302245062 The only critical part is to double check the unit dimensions with your cut out.

Automatic has went out we're looking to do residential but we were told the inverters were thousands of dollars but you got one cheap where did you get it at please tell me
@FindYourCrazy
@FindYourCrazy Год назад
Well if you get an inverter then can run your entire rig (outlets, TV, etc.) it can be very expressive. But to just run one small fridge you don't need that much power, and that was all that we wanted to run. This is the one that I used, I got it from amazon: amzn.to/3hZiG2K Good luck!

I just did this exact swap, replacing a Dometic 2682 for the Magic Chef. My 2021 Keystone Cougar 25RDS already had a 2000 watt inverter, but I added an additional Renogy 1000 watt inverter wired to a dedicated 120 plug behind the refrigerator. It works perfect.
