Im so glad i found this! I want a ferret so bad but also am really wanting to start RVing full time. Now i know its possible and looks so fun to just travel with your pets in general.
Thank you so much for posting🥰 when I get older I want to do Vanlife but I’ve always wanted ferrets I wasn’t sure if I’m available to bc of the lifestyle I want but now that I watched this I’m considering getting then
This is great. I took my little noodle cats camping and when I let them roam in the camper, they immediately pooped in the bed. Something they don’t do at home. Did you do anything special to potty train them for the camper?
Besides putting them in the litter box so they knew where it was, I did not. They were great at always getting to the box, except for one corner where I had to lay a puppy pad down. It's interesting that they did it on the bed, as most ferrets don't like going on soft comfy things. Maybe they got up there, and then really had to go, and couldn't quickly figure out how to get down?
I looked thru video titles but didn’t see it. Do you travel during cold weather? and do you have a backup to the backup to the backup AC system and temperature app to make sure it doesn’t get too hot for the ferrets? That’s one of my big worries with traveling with the ferts in an RV. If I just travel in cooler states in certain seasons and have some sort of system
Currently in Florida, so we definitely don’t follow colder weather lol. But we do take a lot of precautions to keep them safe! We had 1 built-in AC unit on our previous RV (one in this video), and now have 2 built-in AC units on the current RV itself, which have always worked great! We also have a portable AC unit that we can plug into an outlet directly inside the RV, or run it the the outside electrical box directly (where we plug the RV in). We also have a generator where we can run the RV AC or the portable AC if we plug into that. We always keep extra gas on hand for that. If everything listed fails, we can sit in one of our vehicles and run the AC, or get a hotel room for the night. The city we were at 2 weeks ago, actually lost power. We went to plug into our generator, and the spot we put the generator for the new RV wasn’t ‘sealed’ like we were told. Meaning carbon monoxide from the generator was leaking into the RV. Not only do we have a fire/smoke alarm, but we also have both a propane detector, and carbon monoxide detector, which went off in this case. We had to sit in the air conditioned vehicle with the pets for a few hours, while we made sure to air out the RV. (The power came back on right away; we just know we can’t keep the generator where we had it without making it safe.) Besides the temperature monitoring unit Waggle (which runs both on power and battery), we also use cameras to see inside the RV. I always put one where I can see a thermometer, as a secondary backup :)
Ferret care has changed quite a bit over the years; and for the better! The better of a diet you can feed them; the less they smell. They are obligate carnivores, and a balanced raw diet is best. If not possible, a quality kibble high in protein is next best (Orijen Cat food, Wysong Digestive Support for Ferrets, etc.). You don’t want to bathe them a lot. A lot of people think bathing them often will ‘fix’ the smell; when in fact it makes them smell worse; and when you do bathe them (should be only a couple of times a year), you don’t want to use soap. I have a few videos on baths for ferrets. Otherwise, just making sure you scoop the litter box daily, and clean their linens (blankets, beds, blankets) weekly. We have a couple of sets to switch out linens, so we don’t necessarily have to wash them immediately. Hope this helps!
