It's common knowledge that lots of RVs were sold during the Covid pandemic. A lot more than normal.
But the internet is also flooded with lots of complaints from many of the buyers of those RVs. And they are complaining about a whole array of problems that they never expected would be present in a new RV.
So now that those Covid-built RVs are starting to reach the used RV market, the question is - should you buy one or should you pass without even considering them? Well, this video helps answer that question!

I've seen a few issues in that year range. My favorite is what I called the "Elkhart Butt Splice". The 2 ends of a wire striped, overlapped and zip tied together.

We took all of your advice before we bought our 22 jay flight. We bought your books, took you up on the phone call chat, hired an inspector, insisted the dealership take the fixes seriously prior to taking custody and did Wholesale Warranties for peace of mind. We have camped 10 different times in the 8 months we have had it thus far and absolutely love it. Jayco has been great too answering questions and doing the one warranty thing we needed done. So far so good🙂 Thankyou for taking the time to put this kind of information out there! It was so helpful and has made our experience as new RVers so pleasant and enjoyable.

Thanks so much for taking the time to leave this comment Christa. It truly made my day. I am so happy that everything worked out for you as it has. There are a lot of costly mistakes that can be made when buying RVs these days. And that is why I do my best to help RV buyers avoid those mistakes and have a pleasant buying experience instead. Now that you have an RV that you are happy with, I hope that you have lots of fun and happy adventures in it as well!

Currently looking at a Jayco 5th wheel on a dealer lot (2023 model built in Nov 2022). It has a really great discount, but I'm having an inspector look at it. Jayco has a 2 -year warranty and 3 year structural.
@RVInspectionAndCare
@RVInspectionAndCare 6 месяцев назад
That's a very good decision to have a certified inspector go through it before taking delivery of the RV. Many Covid-built RVs were just fine right out of the factory. But not all of them. Thanks for mentioning your thoughts on the subject here.

@@RVInspectionAndCare What are your thoughts on Jayco as a brand? Not my first rodeo in the RV world. Had a Winnebago and Tiffin Class A and a Forest River Class C at one point. Jayco still has the 2-year warranty which seems good.

@@mzi03731 For a high production RV builder, Jayco seems to balance putting out quantity with decent quality better than most RV manufacturers they compete with. At least in my opinion.

Hi Laura. The 2023 built RVs were a little better than Covid-built units, especially as the year went on. But it's still not back to pre-Covid overall quality even yet. However, as the international supply chains improve, and new RV sales moderate to a more sustainable level as they are doing now, hopefully 2024 will be a better year for quality control. We'll see.

Great question to ask. For me it’s a big no. To buy anything from April 21 to about now. This industry as a whole had poor quality before the demand surge. I would caution anyone thinking a warranty is worthwhile. You will be in a very long line. The dealer might get you “in” quickly, but your repair could take months. Don’t take my word, go read the message board of the RV you are thinking of buying. Or you need to be handy and fix you problems while doing the preventative maintenance. This will vary by RV type. High end class A didn’t see the steep growth that occurred with trailers and class B.

Sadly, I purchased a 2022 Tiffin Wayfarer. It was, by far, the worst RV I have ever had. Over a year I only got to use it twice. The rest of the time it was being serviced or waiting for service. All the problems were Tiffin house related. I had no problems with the Mercedes chassis. I finally traded it for a 2017 Tiffin Allegro Breeze. I'm a much happier camper. I would never purchase a 2020-2022 RV.

I’m a single Mom looking at a 2022 Wolfpup by Forest River. They are selling them Cheap lots on lot. Should I avoid? Any help would be appreciated
@RVInspectionAndCare
@RVInspectionAndCare Год назад
A lot depends on what you want your RV to do. I usually do not include Forest River in my recommended list of manufacturers for above average quality and customer service. But that doesn't mean that you can't get a good RV from them. It just means that they are not as consistently good as some of their competition. And entry-level RVs like the Wolfpup tend to have lots of fit and finish problems. If you decide to buy one, I highly recommend getting an RV inspection before taking ownership to make sure that the RV you get is fully functional. I hope that helps.

Absolutely Don. If a dealer denies an RV inspection, it is not a good sign that the dealer is customer oriented. I worked for the State of Oregon Building Codes Agency for many years. Started out in the R/V dept. I’ve been to Elkhart Indiana many many times. So I know these thing’s inside & out. Wayne - you are so right ! How many Rvs get build in a year , think about it ! And now think about how many companies are out there doing it. All money going in and so very little expectation for craftsmanship , let alone quality control . Where is the outrage ? How about where we can see 2 pieces of trim butted together mid length ? So CHEEZY ! But I paid so much money, when would this even be acceptable ?

We ordered our 2022 Newmar Bay Star in April of 2021, took ownership in September of 2021, and have had only very minor issues with it---seemingly waaaay fewer than units from other manufacturers (even BEFORE Covid) have experienced. We brought it back once to the dealer for a minor issue with interior lights and a door latch problem. And we could have fixed those issues ourselves but figured it was still under warranty so why not let the dealer do it--got an appointment quickly and got our MH back in less than a week. That was it. We're loving our motorhome---no horror stories here! Thanks for another great video!

Good question. Verification of correct dealer repairs is not usually included in an RV inspection. But most inspectors I know will return to look over what was done for a reasonable amount that covers their time to do so.

Hi Neal. Jayco is one of my recommended travel trailer brands to consider. But at this point, I highly recommend that you get an RV inspection on any new RV and get the issues the inspector finds fixed before you take delivery. Doing that has saved a lot of RV buyers the frustration and irritation that other buyers are experiencing these days. Thanks for watching!

Well, Covid really hit in earnest in the first quarter of 2020. But some RV manufacturers often release the next year's models before January 1. So some 2020 models were built when the industry was still at full strength. But after Covid was declared a pandemic and workforce shortages set in for good, quality took a big nosedive in the middle and end of 2020. And unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be getting a lot better even now after the pandemic has largely subsided. I hope that helps.

Yes, you sure can. Just visit nrvia.org and select "Find An RV Inspector". On the next page zoom in on the map to the area where the RV is located and it will list the certified NRVIA inspectors that are close by and their contact information. Then reach out them and let them know where the RV is and ask if they can fit your inspection into their schedule. Just choose the one that you feel meets your needs the best. RV inspections are especially good for long distance RV buying.

Hi Dewayne We are looking at a new class A gas RV. The dealer is wanting to charge a $1000+ fee to get the unit ready to deliver. And training how everything works. Being a retired truck mechanic and owning several campers , I should be a lot better at dealing with problems that most RVers. Is a big fee common in the RV industry ?
@RVInspectionAndCare
@RVInspectionAndCare Год назад
RV dealers do a lot of things to shake as much money out of their customer's pockets as they can. And they will continue to do those things as long as consumers allow them to do it. It's the dealer's responsibility in the supply chain to sell you an RV that is in fully workable shape when you take ownership. Unfortunately, many RV dealers these days don't want to take the time needed to do that. So they sometimes will charge the customer for work that they should be doing anyway. That $1K would be better spent by hiring a certified NRVIA inspector to thoroughly inspect the coach before purchase. Then whatever the inspector finds, have the dealer repair those items to your satisfaction before you finalize the deal. If the dealer balks at this arrangement, it is most likely in your best interest to find a different dealer to work with.
@chrisekstrom7964

I would NEVER pay that fee, for something they have to do to deliver the unit. That sounds like a scam.
