Well I started off early just cuttin' grass
Then I was throwin' suds on my neighbors Cadillac
Dinnertime came and I was haulin' scrap
Bout dead tired by the time I got back
Had a couple fresh 20s burnin' holes in my pockets
So I threw em in the closet in an old shoebox
It didn't have much in it
But it did me better than the shoes in em
I'd pinch them pennies all summer long
Then one day they'd all be gone
I'd save up a bunch of twenties, tens, and fives
Then I'd blow it all at one time
Nah I didn't have to need it, I got it if I wanted
I was spendin' every bit of that shoebox money
Well a few years later, as the story goes
I heard a somethin' playin' on the radio
It made me wanna go and buy a microphone
I sat down and wrote my first country song
I didn't really need to think too much about it
Just went to the closet and pulled the shoebox down
It didn't have much in it
