Keep in mind that Oz HAD all the Relics - and he hid them under the schools, in different parts of the world, rather than using them. He does NOT want the Gods coming back, because humanity isn't even close to getting along. That's why he supports peace over war until it exasperates Ironwood, and why he told Blake in Volume 1 that he was working to make strides towards Faunus equality - he is trying to reach that goal.

Now here’s a story I’m going to tell About a young girl that fell under a spell Her name was Salem and I will not skim How this girl was cursed to become the Queen of all Grimm In a Kingdom, set very far away In a tower was where she spend all of her days Imprisoned all her life by a dad with no chill Nothing to do but practice her magic skill Until a man named Ozma busted her out They made a pretty good team there was no doubt They then set out for all adventures ahead But Ozma got sick and poof he’s dead Salem begged for him back to end her strife But the Light God said that’s the circle of life She went to his brother and got her man back But the Gods rescinded and she launched an attack They made her immortal because they’re total wads So she chose to lead an army against the gods They left after killing all the humans for treason Oh yeah I forgot they were Dragons for some reason After some years people came back with no magic Faunus were there too but their lives were more tragic Salem was secluded to hide her disgrace Until Ozma returned but with a new face With her lover back in hand Salem gained a new ambition To Lead the world, but that was not in Ozma’s mission Regardless of that they worked to make the people ogle Then they had some kids, counting four in total Things were seemingly great for our favorite witch Then their kids starting showing a magic twitch Ozma tried to leave with them to avoid damnation But had to fight Salem in a bloody separation Salem was left alone again stewing in hatred And Ozma kept coming back with his worldview jaded So that’s the story we did not skim How a lonely girl became the queen of all Grimm

I think it's worth pointing out that prior to this chapter we'd already been shown the homes of the Brothers. On the world map of Remnant the continent in the upper left looks exactly like the God of Darkness and we know is where Salem lives in the current era. The continent of Anima, where Mistril is located is shaped like the God of Light with the 'head' being about where the city of Mistril was built. And the tree at the center of the God of Light's pool does look quite a lot like the one in the Vault of the Spring Maiden. Bringing the relic together to return the gods isn't Ozma/Ozpin's intention. He's worked hard to keep them separate while Salem is trying to bring them together to end it all. Ozma also asked how to destroy Salem, which can't be the answer as she's divinely immortal. Matthew's words about Salem's ultimatum is what most agree is the key to defeating her or ending her threat. I don't believe that Ozma/Ozpin even knows about that condition, which is why he's focused on destroying her. If you remember when Qrow told the kids about the gods, they already had their time of eternal war with each other. That period ended when they agreed to create the balance of life and death and created humanity the first time. So yeah, they'd long since found their stalemate with each other.
@noox13
@noox13 4 года назад
Actually we don't know where Salem is but if you look at all the events up to this point it makes a lot more sense for Salem to be located on the very dark red peninsula on Anima to the southeast. The terrain color makes more sense and the plans and "troop movements" make more sense.

Perhaps, but there remains the sentence passed down by the Gods that may well still be in play...Salem hides behind others, refusing to accept responsibility, refusing to look inward and realize it is all her fault. There is the theme of mirrors/reflections in the show. It could be just as likely that in some desperate showdown, Ruby's silver ("mirrored") eyes may burn away the delusion enshrouding Salem just long enough to provide a momentary opportunity for the Salem of old to step forth and right everything or drag the world down with her into darkness and oblivion. One way or the other, it should be one heck of a showdown.

Someone other than Oz defeating Salem is one possible implication to Jinn's response to Oz's question. Another one could be true is that Oz simply asked the wrong question/worded his question incorrectly. We as the audience know that Salem has been cursed with immortality so when Oz asked Jinn how to defeat Salem, Jinn could have taken his word "defeat" and equated it to the word "kill". Now I'm no expert, but I'm almost certain that being immortal means that you cannot die/be killed.
@RoninBlackwing
@RoninBlackwing 4 года назад
Two problems with that idea. Number 1 He didn't ask how to defeat Salem. He asked how to destroy her. Very different things. Salem can't be destroyed. It might be possible to defeat her. Number two. And I can't stress this enough. There is NO emphasis on "YOU" in that answer. Nothing to point to a wordplay that Ozma simply missunderstood in his despair. To say nothing of the fact Jinn is not a typical Geenie. She is meant to help and advise, her inspiration were mischevoush, MALEVOLENT, spirits. Ones trapped in a container for ages and therefore having an axe to grind with anyone calling them up to grant wishes. Ascribing that kind of behaviour to Jinn is counterproductive and entirely unfounded. It honestly makes me sad gow people needlesly overfocus on that answer and then completely misrepresent the question just to fit a quite frankly proposterous theory.
@spectrum4524
@spectrum4524 4 года назад
@@RoninBlackwing 1. I believe it's possible to defeat Salem if the condition provided by the god of light is still in effect, which is somehow getting Salem to understand the importance of life and death. 2. What does it matter how outlandish, preposterous, or foolish some of the theories are? It's not exactly a secret that there are people who find entertainment and joy, in theory crafting some of the least probable theories out there by asking what if. Leave them alone and let them theorize to their hearts' content. 3. What we know about Jinn: A) She was created by the god of light to aid humanity B) She cannot answer questions of events yet to come C) She can only answer three questions every century (100 years) D) She recognizes Oz 4. What we don't know beyond a shadow of a doubt about Jinn: A) What rules or regulations must she abide by when supplying answers that could potentially hinder progress? B) Does the fact that she isn't spiteful, angry, and malevolent somehow nullifies the prospect of her giving answers that aren't crystal clear or without twists? Honestly, I don't believe so. The fact that she's a guide to humanity is great, but she could very well be a geenie with the best intentions, but since she is a geenie, she still ends up sometimes providing answers that aren't cut and dry and should only be taken at face value. Is my opinion unfounded with a sheer lack of evidence, absolutely, but the same can be said for the opposite line of thinking. We haven't been given definitive evidence that all of the answers Jinn provides will be crystal clear and without a single twist. Because we don't have evidence for either side, theories for both sides can arise and until RWBY propper confirms one, we won't know for certain. Just because one idea is unfounded doesn't automatically mean that the opposite idea is true. Ascribing similar traits from geenies from other stories to Jinn are unfounded, true, but what about the other way around? RWBY propper hasn't given us evidence that supports the idea that Jinn shouldn't be ascribed with those traits either. Until a definitive answer is written into RWBY propper, neither statement can be backed up and therefore both sides are unfounded.

I just checked the RWBY wikia and the two children are listed as silver-eyed on the "Silver-Eyed Warrior" page, but it doesn't say that it's been confirmed anywhere by anyone. People got excited about this and every second person kept saying those kids had silver-eyes. But, they kept mistakenly claiming that about Mercury. Now, the articles does point out that "Silver eyes have small white lines in the iris, which is a detail that no other eyes have. This serves as a good indicator of the difference between silver and gray eyes." But, I still can't see the eyes those children have as silver. If anything, both have a greenish, yellowish hue to them, which might be from the lighting, but it's definitely not clear enough to say for certain they're silver.

I mentioned in the last comment I had a head canon about the one question in this century and I tied it to the Spring Maiden before she ran away. I think she and Prof Lionheart both went down and asked about Salem and her history, learned everything and then ran away. The Spring Maiden is brought in by Raven, during training she tells Raven about Salem- prompts Raven to kill her and fully turn away from Ozpin.

You can't destroy or kill Salem but the Gods did say how to lift her curse if you pay attention. "You must learn the value between life and death. Only then may you rest.". Salem on the other hand is driven by 2 desires. She wants to die so she can have freedom again and she wants pure destruction. If she brings all the relics together before humanity is ready and the gods come back she's betting on them not only destroying humanity again but destroying the world itself because the gods also said "so long as this world turns you shall walk it's face" if the planet is gone then she's not bound to the curse anymore.

And this is the episode that made Ozpin and Salem my favorite characters and also made me start hoping that somehow, Ozpin and Salem's relationship is how they defeat her. After all, it's what started all this, it's only fitting that it helps end it. Since it pretty much confirmed that the original maidens were their children, perhaps part of Ozpin's curse was also inherited, and that's why the maidens' magic goes from host to host? Or maybe he did give four young women powers after they helped get him out of his depression, perhaps reminding him of his four daughters, and they're how he came up with the idea to give the maidens his magic in thanks. One of my biggest questions about the reincarnation thing is, does Ozpin keep his original semblance(if he had one), or does he use the semblance of his current carnation? Does he keep the semblances of his old lives? After all, the souls start separate before merging into one, so how does that work? The gods did also tell Salem how to remove her immortality, by learning the value of both life and death, she would be able to rest. But she instead kept trying to spite them, leading an army to try to kill them. Yeah, they definitely could have done something else, but Salem was also doing everything wrong. But all this adds complexities to both Ozpin and Salem that I love. (I also kinda ship them, but not as they *are* together more like I wish they were *still* together having lived together and changed for the better) but Ozpin doesn't control who his soul goes to, I'm sure many times he got reincarnated into the body of someone who already had a family, which kinda sucks cause it means he's likely lost many families, and I'm sure there's been at least one time his soul entered a woman's body, which must have been weird. The God of Light was trying to follow rules he and the God of Darkness created together, one of which is not to disrupt the balance of life and death. The god of darkness didn't really care for the rules, and was just going to do whatever he looked (as he said) but after hearing Salem lied to him because GoL wouldn't do it he realized Salem was manipulating him to bring Ozma back, she didn't actually believe only he could do it, like she had told him. They punished her for trying to manipulate them, and when the GoD destroyed humanity, GoL wanted to give humanity a second chance he knew eventually they'd evolve back into existence, so he gave Ozma the chance to help them. I don't think the reincarnation was meant to be punishment for Ozma, but it turned into one. Unlike Salem, Ozma didn't do anything wrong and i believe the GoL wanted to ensure Ozma didn't have to go through what Salem did, what he didn't count on was Ozma and Salem doing everything they did. Just my thoughts on this episode.

But it fits that she may have asked the question and knows now what she knows. With all that Oz told her (and Team STRQ), I doubt he included all these details. I remember when this first came out and a lot of the blame for how Remnant's(?) history came to be was thrown around. "Oh, fuck Ozpin," "Salem is completely responsible," "The Gods are (insert favorite expletive here)," and the fact is that it's just a really bad set of circumstances. The gods don't seem to truly grasp human emotions, or maybe just how individuality works for mortals. The god of Light in particular probably fully expected Salem to learn her lesson after an extended period of time. I don't think he envisioned her becoming spiteful instead of introspective/enlightened. And not fully explaining what happened with Salem was also a bad call. Who knows what might have been had Ozma known of Salem's actions. Maybe he would have never returned to her side, maybe he would have had a better grasp on how to deal with her. And not all of it is on the gods shoulders. Salem never learned the lesson GoL(God of Light) wanted her to learn. She grew spiteful and never believed herself to be in the wrong. Finding and reuniting with Ozma seems to have given her a superiority complex of sorts, knowing the gods were out of the picture and couldn't interfere anymore. Ozma also made a few bad judgement calls but most could probs be explained away as being oblivious to how Salem turned out. I love how you guys noticed that Ozma's probably been through thousands, if not at least hundreds, of years worth of living. He's constantly reincarnated into new lives and assimilated their souls into one complex individual. Salem has lived for just as much time, alone and festering her hate and betrayal by Ozma.The gods are all far removed and out of touch with how Remnant has spun through time. And now it falls on Qrow, RWBY, JNR and the rest of the crew to try and fix it, or at least get the ball rolling for the next generation. And since no one but Ozpin is there to take the full blame... TL:DR Bad situation made worse by lack of open honesty, RWBY got a shit hand to deal with. Sorry for the large ass comment. I always figured dust came from fragments of the moon that feel back to the planet. The Dark brother did say magic was his gift to humanity. He took it away, and upon his exit he crashed through the moon. Leaving magic residue which fell back to the planet on the moon meteors. Landing in every part of the planet due to its rotation. And because much of the larger fragments hit with tremendous force, they created craters and got buried in the ground. Hence the need for dust mines to retrieve most dust crystals.

@@corberus3119 Exactly my thought. Another more radical theory if I may. I submit that the Faunus are a mutation caused by radiation (magical properties) from the dust that fell back to the planet. As depicted, early second generation man seemingly didnt know what to make of these mutated people, relegating them to the level of strange animals and subsequently kept them in captivity.

The gods are terrible parents. Light kicks a grieving woman out as soon as she raises her voice, Darkness commits genocide over the actions of a single individual, while his brother looks on and does nothing. Then, after all the fuss he made over the balance, Light cheats by forcing Oz on child after countless child, all growing up knowing their own individuality would eventually be subsumed. No wonder Oz didn't want Ruby to ask the question; this might not even be the first time he's been forced to live through it again. He was the archetypal hero, and now he's spoiled, his myth tarnished. The only reason he got back to his task is because four travelling sisters reminded him of their children. I don't see why everyone's so angry with him. He's a pitiable man. Salem's put so much effort into dividing humanity while trying to gather the relics. The grimm in her *wants* the gods to destroy the world. She probably wants Ruby alive to burn the grimm out of her before she does it; but once that's done, she might finally realise what the gods had been trying to teach her in the first place. So yeah, don't ask for their blessings or their judgement, just ask them to fix what they broke. Let the unhappy couple go off to the afterlife together at last, then leave and never come back.

A grieving woman who was selfish. If he ressurrected Ozma, he would have to do the same for every other person showing up and demanding a loved one to come back, thus ruining the whole point of the Gift of Life; nothing lasts, so savour each moment and do the most of the life that has been given. It's not always fair (such as Ozma's untimely demise) but that's how it is. Salem them tries to go behind the GoL's back, again because she's selfish. When that fails, she unites the people against the Gods and as such they squander their gifts of choice (choosing to selfishly steal immortality) and gifts of magic (attacking the gods with GoD's own gift) thus turning humanity against the gods and should they had survived, they would never see the gods in the same light; they would plot against them and demand things, eventually taking them for granted. All because she didn't get what she wanted. Yes, GoL looks on as GoD destroys them, but he looks away because he doesn't like it, but he knows that humanity was now faulty. They made her immortal to make her learn to respect life, but also death; to not take either of these things for granted. A life without death is not as wonderful as many people seem to believe, and unfortunately death is needed.

I can see either way with the maidens. I like the idea that in one of his lives where he just shut himself in a cabin to wither away, he met four young women who reminded him about the beauty of life, and so he granted them power. But it also makes sense that the children of Salem and Ozma not only gained their ability to use magic, but they also inherited their father's ability to reincarnate in a manner, just not to the full extent (since there doesn't seem to be any memories or personalities tied to the maiden powers). So the legend could just be an incorrect retelling of why they exist. I'd honestly prefer the old man in the cabin version, as its a bit more tragic, but I also see the emotional impact of ozpin seeing every maiden as literally the reincarnation of his daughters.

For starters, I think that any rational person will realise, Salem did the things she did because she only wanted Ozpin back by her side. But what was done to her for this simple thing was horrid to put it lightly. No human, regardless of their actions, deserves that kind of torture and "pain". Many people who watched this episode quickly concluded that Salem still a villain and was still wholly responsible for everything that has transpired (regardless of her intentions), this is not the case though because one of RWBY's morals (and a realistic one at that) is that there is no such thing as true good and evil, only shades of grey. Ozpin died due to illness; in real life this is "life", plain and simple, but in remnant, there were gods that have power over life and death; who would not take advantageof this. Salem goes to the god of light and begs him, but he turns her down, saying the cycle cannot be altered yet he does so later on which contradicts what he tells her. And so she goes to his brother and begs him. He agrees because she is the first human to go to him for help. In the end, out of selfishness and pride, they see Salem's act as an insult, and so they give her a pain that can never be cured "so long as this world turns, you shall walk its face". In the end, Salem is fed up with the gods controlling and dictating what is "right" and "wrong", regardless if humans are left to die just like Ozpin did. She and others rebel, and as punishment, all humans (regardless of who rebelled and who was innocent) are wiped from existence and then they leave, stating that everything was simply an "experiment". Salem is now alone, powerless, amd only able to cry out in sorrow. The gods made humanity yet they end it all because one of their children wants her lover back, and the gods simply see it as arrogance instead of understanding the very emotions that they created and gave humanity. With enough emotion, humans are capable of anything, good and bad, yet its the gods who were ignorant in dealing with the situation and decided to take extream action instead of giving comfort to Salem for her loss. And then the god of light returns Ozpin to life, despite his statement about altering the cycle being a bad thing. And he gives no real justification for bringing Ozpin back apart from stating that Ozpin is a good person. In the end of the episode with Ozpin and Salem ending everything in destruction; when Ozpin thinks Salem is turning to the dark, instead of talking to his wife/ the mother of his children to extinguish her suposed "dark actions", he turns tale and tries abducting the kids. Any mother would do anything, even kill, if you tried to take her children from her and thats what he hot. The whole thing about Salem wanting to replace humanity could have meant many things (the prevailing theory was that she would only allow the world to be populated by their descendants and followers, not the arrogant and the greedy). She was trying to end pain, suffering, and arrogance among humans so that no one suffers like she did, and so that everyone could live peacefully. In many ways, she and Ozpin were better than the brother gods. Ozpin immediately assumes the worst case scenario when Salem plans to replace humanity and abandons everything they made together, even after everything Salem did and all the pain and suffering she endoured to bring him back. After everything she has suffered, can you blame her for hating Ozpin after what he did. Is Salem to blame for everything that has happened, no. It was primarily the gods in their ignorance and pride that lead to this, Ozpin is also partly to blame since he would rather follow the will of the so called "loving god of light" rather than his wife and their bond as a family. The prevailing fan theory at the moment is that at the end of the series, Salem will not be killed, she will be "saved" by learning to forgive Ozpin, this is the main challenge for our heroes since she has nothing but hatred for Ozpin for abandoning her and their family. It's not about destroying evil, because you can't: humanity is both good and evil and destroying either will only destroy everyone. If you remember her song "divide", the main lyrics "strength will not bring victory" and her narration for episode 1 stating that "there will be no victory in strength" reinforces this theory greatly. Salem cannot die because that is her curse; even after Ozpin reduced her to a pool of blood, she still lived. and sevond, she is not supposed to die because she is not the main cause of humanities divide and she is also a victim of the world at that. Ozpin trying to kill her will not unite humanity, his mission was to unite humanity (Salem included) yet he has made a whole secret army to kill her while covering up his sins against her; his secrecy and plots have caused more harm than good when you look at all the people who have died because of his unwillingness to tell the truth. The final scene at the end of the episode with Ozpin/Oscar collapsed on the ground is meant to insinuate that he did not know the full truth about what Salem went through and after seeing everything, his whole goal of ending Salem being the key to unite everyone has shattered. As for the relics, Salem plans to use them to punish humanity and make Ozpin watch as she does, so that he feels the same pain and powerlessness he put her through when she tried to bring him back (her way of "watching Ozpin burn"). she would gain nothing by killing him, and she won't unite the relics because that will just summon the gods who will just end her and everyone else. The theory is that the one who will end up uniting the relics is most likely Cinder since she is the one who lusts for power, unlike Salem who just wants revenge against Ozpin and only him. In conclusion, has Salem done terrible things since the war between her and Ozpin began, yes. But that does not dismiss the fact that she is a victim who has been broken and forced to endur pain that no human should endure. And now our heros are left with one lingering question: how can they get Salem to give up her vendetta and forgive Ozpin?

I just thought of something. The last question Oz gave, maybe he was asking the wrong question? Instead of how to destroy sailom, how does he save her? From the darkness? I mean they loved each other right. Sailom did everything she could to bring him back (save him) and payed the consequences. But when Oz was sent to destroy her it must have not only angered her, but made her sad from the inside because the darkness can be deceiving, it’s not just men’s heart that can be swayed, even women too.

I do have a thought on the fallibility of the gods... Why didn't they destroy Salem, surely not just to punish her more. If they can wipe a world from reality then they could keep Salem from Ozma in the afterlife. I think they made her Immortal and now they don't know what to do with her. They didn't put a escape clause in the curse they laid on her, "So long as this world turns, you shall walk its face" The Dark Brother doesn't strike me as a retrained kind of god and the way Salem had to get up after the pulse which wiped out humanity kind of makes me think she shook it off and surprised the brothers. Then they left and recruited Ozma to fix their mistake. It would make sense that if they laid the task of fixing the next incarnation of humanity, he could not do so with Salem there. Furthermore they waited until after Salem was Grimm before calling upon Ozma? I think the brothers are saying to themselves "This is becoming a real problem, lets have someone else figure it out and come back once it is smoothed over!" Just my feelings on the situation.

@@dragonrune6800 Yes, but he added that alone and that was before the Thanos-esk moment. It may not have been until then that they realised she keeps returning. That whole "If you remain unchanged, we shall wipe your world from existence" thing maybe their last resort. If push comes to shove they will need to wipe everything to end her. I am not married to this theory, I just wondered because of the events. But it would be an interesting twist that the gods are not the answer and are in fact deferring a problem they caused to humanity to deal with.
@MattHunX

The gods were kinda dicks, though. Salem wants the relics, probably so she could have their power at their disposal. I don't imagine she'd want to summon the gods, just so they'd see the state of Remnant and destroy it, as they warned. Ozpin simply wants to keep the Relics out of her reach, so she doesn't become even more unbeatable than she already seems to be. However, even if they get all the relics, at the end of the story and they summon the gods, I can easily imagine Ozpin/Ozma telling the gods that he didn't do it for them. That he didn't try and make the world and humanity better just to have their blessing, in a way, saying that the gods can go screw themselves for making his life and everyone else's a constant battle for survival just to earn their love. The way he talked about the gods cursing him, in V5, made it seem like he harbors a fair bit of resentment towards them (that I don't think was an act on his part, in order to not tell the students the complete truth). It seems like he wants to save/destroy Salem more for himself (to put her to rest, along with himself) than for the gods, at this point. After countless life-times and certain a number of them, after Jinn told him he can't beat Salem. Even after hearing that, he still went on to collect the relics and built the schools around them. He could have fallen right back into a drunken depression that would have made Qrow look fucking Amish (to borrow a line from the late Robin Williams), leaving the world and the people to fend for themselves, but instead he chose to give them hope and made their lives somewhat less of a struggle by founding the Huntsmen Academies and training new huntsmen, with every generation, to keep the world from succumbing to darkness. Even though he has no way of defeating Salem, he wants to keep hope alive in all who live their lives and all who will have the chance to walk the surface of Remnant, to make their existence safer, no matter how they choose to live it. Which is a long-winded way of saying, he doesn't deserve all the anger being directed at him. Sure, it might make it seem like e.g.: Pyrrha died for nothing. That Hazel's sister died for nothing. But, that isn't the case. And all of them had a choice. To do the same Ozpin tried to do, even after every revelation he got, to help humanity. They cannot fault him for that. And honestly, the way they keep saying he lied to them and left things out and only given them half-truths...what the hell could he have said, exactly? "Oh, Salem and I come from a previous generation of humans, all of whom could wield magic and they were wiped out, after I died from an illness and Salem rallied all of humanity against the gods, because they wouldn't grant her wish of reviving me. Oh, and the Faunus weren't even a thing. Only after the hard reset and after the God of Light brought me back and made me reincarnate. By then Salem turned evil, but we still hooked up, even had children, four of them (totally coincidentally), but I wasn't willing to go along with her plans, so we fought, killed all of our kids, then, she killed me and..." That would have went over well. But, this...the way they actually SAW it all, made Ozpin even less irredeemable. What he's done, after what he's been through, is hardly unforgivable. But, as the parody "This is basically RWBY" says, they STILL keep trying to paint him as someone who's untrustworthy.
