Part of what makes Salem so terrifying to me is how soft-spoken and casual she is. She sounds almost motherly even as she tortures children and leads genocidal campaigns against humanity.
She is voiced by Jen Taylor, who voiced Cortana and Doctor Halsey in Halo, Halsey was basically like a mother to the Spartan 2s, Jen brings that kind motherly softness of Halsey into Salem, but it’s so weird that it’s used for a villain, just gives me chills seeing Salem, I want to trust her, but I know she’s evil. It’s epic.
@@powerhouse6165 And the same voice actress who voice the hologram AI hot chick in Master Chief’s head from Halo. But I just learned something from the RWBY Villain wiki about Salem doesn’t want to rule the world of Remnant as well. She becomes a Dark Queen, but instead of being finally destroyed by removing her immortality from her dark form.
Yet the most scary part of her is the durability despite all her other great feats. Maybe one should cure her or send her into orbit instead of destroying. All extremelly difficult.
Salem is sure to be one of the most patient and observant villain's in a franchise I have ever seen. Her goal is one of the most unpredictable and she doesn't complain about failure like other villains do. But I hope she teaches Cinder a lesson in V9 or V10 because she knows she lied to her. In fact I bet she knew Cinder's moves ever since she got the grimm arm and Salem is just watching through it.
I’m pretty sure her motive for the relics is so she can die. When the gods come back and see humanity is divided (because of Salem) they will wipe out remnant once and for all.
That's the beauty of it There's just enough there where you love the character. But not too much to where you get sick of them or they feel generic Salem is 🤌🤌🤌🤌
Well if you live for centuries your bound to encounter examples of all kinds of people. It’s why Salem is so scary, Ozpin is immortal too, but when he dies he has to start life all over again, trying to work WITH his host, eventually taking control, but having to build a new life each time. Thus when his preparations fail for a time he’s lost all hope of winning. Salem is immortal in the same life, thus she can react and change her plans faster then Oz, plus no one knows how to defeat her, thus even when her forces are fought back she can just wait longer, making more plans, resulting in Oz having to start again. She is terrifying.
@@niaford690 And that's why she's so awesome, most series have hinted at a way to defeat the big bad, But not for Salem, which adds a little level of terror for the viewer, you also feel for Team RWBY and JNPR as they're just teens forced into this, there a good chance they could die along the way, so until we find a way to actually kill her you kind of worry for each encounter if Salem were to show up, at best any victories the heroes claim are simply delaying the inevitable. That's how you make an intimidating villain, make their victory over the heroes seem inevitable.
This was her season. We saw her cunning and powers after volumes of waiting. I hope she does more experiments with Grimm and get more one on one scene with cinder. Bouncing them off each other is the best way to develop them
Agreed she kinda just existed in volumes 4-7 not doing a lot physically and usually just giving a broad interpretation of the task it’s nice to see her be a truly evil force of nature seeking release and destroying anything in her path and the fact she is being the most annoying tease for what the f**k happened To summer, this is where the hype of volume 3s ending really went
Concerning Salem doing more experiments on grimm. I doubt the writers will have time to dabble into that. V9 will probably be more rushed than V7 & V8.
@@alunsinus_prime That’s okay, I just wasn’t personally impressed by her getting kicked around by Super Saiyan Rainbow Hazel and then blown up just for Ironwood and Cinder to steal the spotlight for the next 5 episodes.
I've been looking so forward to this for months! Excellent work as always, my friend! However, I think you forgot one of the best lines. It was her, "It's... time." at the end of "Midnight".
I love her she is the very best villain in the series for real and she can’t be killed and she is powerful like queen of her words and doing her plans.
That’s why she’s dangerous, her victory seems inevitable, Oz often has to make new plans whenever he’d be reborn, he has to anticipate her moves and prepare. But for Salem she has patience, so if all her forces are beat back one time, she’ll hide and prepare for the next round. She can’t seem to be killed, or at least know one knows how to kill her, thus she can keep trying again and again forever until she succeeds, Ozpin is the one suffering. Having to ruin lives every time he’s reincarnated to use them as a new body and prepare for Salem. Literally an endless game of chess, he may win every game, but they can’t stop, and eventually he’ll be worn out or she’ll learn a final strategy that claims her victory. That’s why RWBY is pretty awesome.
Video idea... All the deaths of everyone who died in the fall of atlas starting from volume 7 with Frea and clover and All the way through volume 8. All the deaths in order basically.
@@VergilDarkslayer Not the echoes, but the recordings. The echoes almost sound like the weapon. (I dunno how else to describe it, it's kinda weird) Even the altered Halo 4 Ending scene echo didn't sound like EvilTana.
@@VergilDarkslayer I meant the stuff in the cutscenes themselves, and not the random holograms😅 Goodness gracious. I can't describe what the fudge I'm talking about.😬🤦
3:44 thank you Salem please continue to torture Cinder 😊 However it should have been longer….😡 Gosh I hate Cinder character more than I hate Sakura Haruno from Naruto 😅
A classic, mistaking speaking time with presence. Over 6 minutes of pure *speaking* is very good, any character has screen time without actually speaking as well...
Salem needs more screentime, I was really disappointed when they left her out of the last 5 episodes and persisted with Cinder yet again. Salem should of been the final boss of volume 8.
@@Lucas61616 But she wasn't even 'present' for a good portion of the volume. Only one episode were she really got involved in the action. And when she reappeard, she was taken out almost as fast. I was promised some serious time with Salem in V8 if the trailers were to be considered. I felt cheated. ;)
@Books and Tv Geek I'm sick to death of cinder TBH and I'm sick to death of cinder going after the maiden powers in nearly every finale. Volume 3 in beacon, Volume 5 against raven, volumes 7 against penny and winter , volume 8 twice, first when she fought penny and then again in the finale. Can't these writers think of something else to do with Cinder. This volume finale was the perfect opportunity to use Salem, but they went with bloody cinder again. I like Salem, I think she's a really good villian and I was so hyped to see Salem in proper action this volume, instead we got a small taste and she was gone again. I was actually hoping cinder didn't make it out of volume 5 alive, but my hopes were dashed when she returned, I just don't like the character
Am I the only one that f**king hates Salem? How can a person beat someone that is way too op and with minimal weaknesses? There’s not a single villain from any sort of media that is like her.
You don't indulge in media entertainment much, do you? Few minutes of thinking and we have: Aizen Bleach Priscilla Claymore Madara Naruto. Apokalips X-men
The fact that you can't kill her is literally the point. She is designed in a way that she isn't meant to be beaten by any physical means. That's not a bad thing. It just means that either she is beaten through some other means, she is convinced to fulfill her duty to the gods and is allowed to die, or she wins and is still stuck in her eternal, undying torment. Either way, she doesn't need to be killed for there to be a compelling story.
What I love about Salem is her patience. She have time. She isn't going anywhere. Even if a part of the plan fails, she have TIME to find another way. As immortal, is something that she grew to take advantage of.
@@blackmario1117 To be fair, Ozpin was at a serious disadvantage against Salem due to how his own immortality doesn't exactly work like hers as he becomes weaker the more he dies and reincarnates (and that he scarified a large portion of his magic that created the Four Maidens) while she remains as powerful from the start since she doesn't lose any of her magic when she regenerates as she literally cannot die.
I like that when a villain takes advantage of their immortality. Some can’t because they aren’t but some are so it would be easy to set up things in their favour.
A thing I like about Salem is how, unlike most villains, eerily calm and reserved she is, she only loses control whenever she is displeased OR when Ozma/Ozpin is involved
In her defense, I'd lose it if my former spouse went out of their way to make my life hell. I'd want to make Taylor Armstrong's freakout on Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills look like a Disney movie too. She didn't have 20 years.
@@devinreis5811 yeah so she tricked the gods into fighting eachother than tricked humanity into rebelling against them by promising them power and glory because she couldn't wait until her time came and be reunited with ozma in the afterlife she deserves no sympathy she's not a victim she's the cause of all this because she wanted omzas dick quit defending her.
@@devinreis5811 In Ozma's defense, he didn't really ask to be reborn over and over either. Its only cause Salem couldn't handle being told no by the GoL and tried to manipulate the GoD that she is suffering. Her actions had these consequences. She still didn't learn after the Gods destroyed everything. And she still didn't learn after Ozma was reborn. She wants to destory the world because she's unhappy of her existence, Ozma doesn't want the world to be destroyed because of the innocents but he's just as unhappy with his situation. Imagine the guilt he's gotta have from pretty much taking over other people's bodies.
Salem being completely in control of the situation, getting punched out of nowhere, immediately in combat mode, and then being grappled and lit on fire with no in-between is hilarious to me
I had just watched the hound reveal before it and the tone of her response at 5:33 sent a shiver down my spine! I don't like the tone of that response....it pretty much seems like her saying "Oh, she's important to more than just Ruby, maybe I should put HER in the next hound?"
I feel like deep inside Salem still loves Oz but doesn't show it in front of him neither anyone. She doesn't like when Oz is opposing her from her plans to control humanity or to destroy humanity.
I totally get why she's a crazy bitch. She thought she hit the jackpot in terms of a life partner, and randomly hearing "I think we should separate because I think you're a crazy bitch" out of nowhere, I just think "Why not?" She thought she got her happy ending, and getting back in the saddle after a breakup isn't easy. But I also think, "Lady, if you wanna make his life hell, try prank calling 20 times a day."
One of the most intimidating villains because of just how patient, casual, calm, and soft spoken she is, even when she is outright pissed and infuriated.
I dont know what it is. But i Love Salem. could it be her confidence, her wisdom, her patience. maybe it is because she doesnt have to raise her voice to be threatening.
I love this 'only speaks' series!!! You do wonderful work with these, I'mStrange. It's really too bad that Salem's best scene couldn't be in this one. The scene of Salem 'conducting' the main assault on Atlas!!! It literally screams of The Major's big scene in Hellsing Ultimate!!! LOL Too bad Jen didn't have a couple lines there.... Or even a little 'Song of Chaos'!! 😰🎤🔥 Keep up the great works!!! 😎👍🌹🙏😰
I still laugh at the fact that the attack on Vale and Beacon Academy, 95% of the students ran away, while only the 5%, which were more than likely our main character heroes, stayed and fight.
She has similarities with DJ Octavio from the Splatoon series: • They both have an army. (Octavio is the leader of the Octarians and Salem is the master of Grimm.) • They used to have original forms (Octavio used to have a humanoid form and Salem was fully human before she became a human Grimm hybrid.) • They’re stuck in their current forms. (Salem was cursed with immortality + being a Grimm hybrid and Octavio can’t transform out of his octopus form because he has scars) • They both very old. (Octavio is over 107 years old and Salem is many millennia old) • They have lifelong enemies (Ozma for Salem and Captain Cuttlefish for Octavio)
What i like about Salem is that you think she dont know Wat you do, she does. She just sit back and wait to see if you lie to her. Then she catch you then get your azzz...lol so dont bother lying. Its a waste of time. She knows cinder is a bulls#×÷ er.. She just waiting for all she wants and Shes gonna do cinder like she do everybody she feel betrayed her..kill her...
Salem: ¿acaso sabes quien soy? Rey pajaró Jaime: se que tu y tus discipulos teneis la mala cosntumbre de que cada vez que perdemos algo nos lo restregais por la cara Salem: Jaime ¿como puedes........conocerme tan bien?
