I’m so pleased that someone is still making videos on RX8, and super pleased that it’s you. You have tons of knowledge and a great way of explaining this superb car. Only you could explain how an ssv works. My 40k miles RX8 has had only minor problems so far, till the 661 CEL. I understand engines but have limited tools and experience in taking them apart. Also I don’t trust our mechanics over here in Uk.
The LS coils are such a worthwhile upgrade. The ignition system is critical on any car, especially a rotary. I put new plugs, wires, D585 coils, and a 700CCA battery in my RX-8 with the 2KW starter and now she fires up on the first stroke every time, hot or cold. I pre-mix with with Klotz, run Castrol 10W-30 mixed with Marvel Mystery in the Sohn and use Castrol classic 20W-50 in the crankcase. I love this car, man. Thanks for the vid!
changing to XS power lithium LIFP battery doses wonders or at least on my mopar's v6 I6 1970-426-hemi aka better than a red-top optima and 500-1200CCA flooded-lead battery in RPM-cranking-speed and it's got more capacity/power/more-reliability and 1/4th the weight ps. not sponsored either i just like there product/tech and don't plan on going back to 1966 400-700CCA battery tech as in the 22f winter lolz 😂good luck with starting my 383/or/hemi ect
*I bought a 'blown' S2, for around $2,200...* Turned out, the shop that was selling it, just flooded it. They did not know how to fix it. It hot starts perfectly fine.
That’s basically what I did. Bought an 04 manual rx8 with high miles and low compression, but otherwise clean. Had hot start problems and other issues the owner couldnt figure out. Bought it from him pretty cheap and just upgraded the ignition system, cooling, suspension and other little things which fixed the hot start despite the compression. It ran fine for 2-3 years until I was able to save up enough to buy new oem parts to build a new engine. Its probably the best way to get an rx8 if you dont have the 8k+ to buy one with decent compression up front.
Great vid bro. Also, carbon build up can cause that slow reduction in compression by causing stuck seals. Or if the oil injectors are failed you will get additional internal wear in irons and housings also leading to lower compression. You still can't tell if you'll get heavily worn parts or excessive carbon or just fatigued seals and springs. You make a great point though, low comp shouldn't turn you off from buying a cheap 8. Looking forward to the REW teardown.
Firstly I’d just like to say this is my favorite rotary centered channel. Rob dahm and the Vargas brothers are too freakin advanced for me lol. Secondly. This channel more than any other makes me want to make so many poor financial decisions lmao. I have an ugly RX-8 that I bought for $2500 that actually runs beautifully aside from a power “bump” at around 6800rpm that I think would be caused by the ssv?. Hot and cold starts in like 1.5 seconds or less. I want so badly to get a new intake (currently has a hot air intake system held on with a zip tie) and a new exhaust system (catalyst material is just tink-ing around in there and the mid pipe is welded to the header) then paint. But I’m also operating on a budget lol.
Good Radformation. I was looking for a cheap RX-8 as a companion to my pristine 2009 in 2021 when I bought those 4 abandoned FBs. Kinda wish I'd have gone RX-8 instead because fighting mice, bugs and rust slows my motivation on the FBs.
I got a 152k oem engine still running good. Low compression no doubt, barely any hot start issues but man I’m impressed with what the cars been through.
You can alleviate the hot start issues a little bit with a flat cranking pulsewith table set to at least 35ms everywhere above 50c ECT if you have ECU flashing software. The stock ECU calibration reduces the cranking pulsewith at 50c from 35ms all the way down to 3ms by the time you hit operating temp for hot start emissions reasons.
Best way to start a low compression or flooded rx8 is hold your foot down on the gas cranked it over for a few seconds and then release your foot from the gas the car will start right up
I bought a cheap rx8 a couple months ago... the front rotor compression is down to 40 psi and it still runs lol. The rear rotor still has good compression still, and during medium hot starts(she don't hot start) you can hear the bitch is a one rotor for a bit. I bought it knowing it would need a rebuild, but shit I feel like I've had my fun even with shit compression. Tons of people online make it sound like you can't drive them below 7 bar, which is a bit misleading. She just needa cool.
This is my favourite moment at the crammed costco fuel outlet, being at the front starting the rx8, will it, wont it, of course it will, thanks for the applause 😂😂😂😂😂
I love how people call the RX8 "slow" when you do 0-60 in 6.5 seconds with the 231hp one or 6.8 seconds for the 192hp one? (given the engine's fine) Like I'm sorry But that's fast It's not Supercar fast, sure, but for any road car that's affordable that's incredibly fast
Trying to get mine running right. It loses power at random times at stop lights and signs. Cold starts are great, but hot starts are hard. Didn't start happening until i got my alternator changed. 🤔😮💨
Really nice video! (And love your content)! I would not be afraid of buying a lower compression one too, but I do worry sometimes about instances of some that have “fine” numbers but stuck randomly pop a coolant seal or spring on long trips (didn’t that happen to your green one on a trip?!) Also, curious in your experience how May miles you’ve seen low compression ones last for before needing to be rebuilt? Does the blue one have 200k original miles? Good work on this video, makes me wanna drive my 07 everyday as a daily now!
This is whats going on with my rx8 the car runs perfectly fine it just has a low compression i tested it starts up just like in the video runs but when i turn off the car and try turning it back on thats when the low compression goes the car is cranking up i can hear the engine trying to start back up but the compression is low hopefully this video can help me out with it ( i tend to keep a small crank up battery 🔋 just in case if it has a low start up
I have a question! when your engine has been street ported, will it take longer start than non ported one? and the Gas trick, you just press it all the way down, crank the engine and then release your foot off?
1 said low compression missile another part u said they're slow and even slower when it has no compression. Forgive me for pointing this out but it's a straight up contradiction. Also RX8 aren't slow as a whole and besides old RX8 aren't the best of all RX8s R3 is far more reliable, quicker, more powerful, and peaks easily at 9K
I have no explanation for my RX8. I can cold start it well and even shut off off immediately after. Starting it again works perfectly fast and it never floods. When i drive it for around 10 minutes to the next gas station and restart it. It takes way longer to start. BUT. When i drive it for 30 miles on german autobahn and get it really hot with hight speeds and restart it, it starts perfectly fine within maximum of 3 seconds... WHY?
My Mazda does not idle after it warms up to optimum operating temperature, nor does it start when hot! I bought the car a month ago, and I haven't been able to drive it because of this!
I’ve had two of em … loved both cars …. Love the NA block so much I have another MSP block that I ported …. In the process of CAD designing a manifold for The downdrafts itb set up … and it’ll not be a multi piece like the many of the ones out …. Looking for someone down to make this shit happen and put it into a CandC …. If anyone in the comments is down lmk !
Man! I am having some issues I have a 2004 mazda rx8 the passenger abs sensor was ripped out and I can't find where it goes back into the wiring harness! Anywhere on Google or anything any help would be so amazing
Isn't a good used engine going to be hard to find since lots of people need one and they didn't make that many? I just heard a new metal was invented that is resistant to heat up to rocket temperature. Gotta make seals out of that stuff someday. There's a clean RX-8 with low mileage for $1500 and the owner says it runs great but has hot start issues. I want to believe you so bad😅.
Just rebuilt my motor with new seals but didn’t replace all the side seal springs or apex seal springs. Using reused irons and resurfaced housings. Do you think springs are my issue? Getting 80psi average when hot in both cylinders. Maybe needs to break in due to used irons?
Love the content as always. From your experience, can a 12A last more than 140K on average if owned by a rotary enthusiast under the conditions of daily driving/spirited runs on weekend? My friend claims to have racked up 205K miles on his 12A before a vacuum leak caused hotspot on side seal and blew it, but other rotor had 85psi...meanwhile I got 127K on my RX8 engine and still running like a champ. Is 12A a better longevity rotary engine? What's most you've ever seen? Is there a design advantage over 13B S4, REW, Renesis?
Hey man, you mentioned how your green rx8’s first engine had misfires at high rpm at the track. Mine kinda does that when I bring up past 7k rpm initially but after it gets hot, it doesn’t do it anymore. Also if i bring it up to 8k+ rpm and let off the gas to engine brake it’ll throw a loot of blue smoke out the exhaust. I do have a catless midpipe, but I also have one bad rotor with low comp. any idea what is going on and would it still be driveable for a little while? She starts fine.
currently have a 2011 s2 runs and drives pretty well with 69,120 miles, no hot start issues, it has a full racing beat exhaust with the dual resonator setup and a Bennet Built Coil Pack with plugs recently replaced, im currently running 20W-50 Conventional but I will soon switch over to 10w-30 conventional and I still run some premix everyday, soon enough when the engine goes, will it be worth investing into a N/A 20B? And will that last longer as a NA build?
Quick question. What is the best engine oil to replace the nearly extinct Mazda 5w30 fully mineral oil and how often should it be changed. I only do 3000 a year max.
Great vid as always brotha. My 8s been dumping oil out the exhaust for a little bit now (been driving my truck instead cuz, yeah, gas and oil expensive lol) Haven't really done much other than mess with omp positioning but my gut is telling me its control rings, but then I use my brain and think it may be a bad vacuum leak cause my throttle body was super filthy the last time I cleaned it. The smoking is very random too, but when it does its DURING a pull, not after, so its kinda weird to me. What do you think?
@@RADPotential Cool! I remember seeing it with the rotary group that would always show up to a big car meet at the mall in Murfreesboro way back when. Always loved the Winning Blue.
