Best interpreter ever. Saw them also translate for Koreeda at the BFI and they did such an amazing job. So chuffed for Hamaguchi here.

She's very good and it's certainly not an easy job. However, she omitted a couple of bits in the last section about it being an honour for him and that he'd like to continue on this journey.

@@patpats5277 I guess it’s also worth considering the countdown they were given, probably not a lot of time to make your speech in the non-English language category unfortunately.

True. This should've won best picture. Still wouldn't agree with The Power of the Dog getting that award.

@@emptylikebox Yeah, I'm always baffled by how a person can see a masterpiece like Drive My Car and then still vote for some 6 or 7/10-type film like The Power of the Dog

@@emptylikebox It would be 100% fine if Drive My Car or West Side Story won best picture. I honestly don’t know how The Power Of The Dog or Don’t Look Up can win.

As a Japanese national, I`m not sure whether I should be pleased to hear Drive My Car director Ryûsuke Hamaguchi accepts the award for Film Not in the English Language at the 2022 EE BAFTAs. To date, it is widely believed culture and art are always created by Westerners. Western culture is supposed to have universal values while Non-Western cultures are not. Japanese culture attracts Westerners not because of its universal value but because of uniqueness. Kurosawa`s movies are appreciated by Western viewers not for its universality but its uniqueness. However, two Asian countries China and Japan rank the second and third positions economically today, and I hope Non western cultures and values will play more important roles universally.
