This was a long time coming, but now Taylor finally gets to share his side of the Ryan Clark vs Derrick Henry argument.
FULL EPISODE: • Why I AM ATHLETE Broke...
-----
Get on the bus with NFL players Will Compton & Taylor Lewan! The Boys are letting you in on their hilarious, high-energy (and often heartfelt) conversations. Topics range from exclusive stories to active player perspectives to out-of-left-field hot takes on things you and your friends only discuss behind closed doors. Sometimes they chat with a guest, sometimes it's just the two of them, but it's always a good time when you're Bussin' With The Boys.
And yes, this is the podcast where Mike Vrabel said he'd cut his piece off for a Super Bowl.

Ryan is right of his assessment of Derek. People forget that Tennessee had to get Eddie George to talk to Derek about using his size and running through holes that were not huge like college because he was tip toeing through holes even though he 250lb his first few years in the league.He changed his game up after that. Derek is a big fast slasher with a great stiff arm for smaller guys. He is not a power back who is going run over linebackers.

That wasn’t the reason why, Derek is a throwback guy because he’s always been used in that fashion as he’s the nations leading rusher ever in high school and college he’s one of few 2k rushers winning the Heisman he needs 25 plus touches to be as impactful as he can be his first couple years he was splitting with demarco Murray and the pats ex running back his 3rd year until that Monday night game in 2018 against the colts where they let him run loose and saw what he was made of Derek is a bellcow back everyone knows he’s getting the ball but it’s hard to stop because it wears on you as the game goes on and yes he’s big but he’s not slow or fat so he’s a zone one cut guy like his Chubb is he’s just 6’4 260 at the same time so the impact of him is greater and so is the big play ability as he lead the league in that stat his past 3 seasons being healthy

RC is right. It's hard to be a power back when you're so tall. The main factor in being able to run through tacklers head on is the degree to which the shoulder pads can be lowered for leverage. Without leverage, he isn't getting any push. That's why a LB like Robert Spillaine can stop him in his tracks, even if it hurts like hell to run into +240lbs.

Somebody once said that Henry is terrifying because his knees get churning very high with those huge strides. Not fun trying to get low on that. But those strides build over 20 yards. He has the acceleration of a 4.6 guy and the top speed of a 4.3 guy. Easy to hit inside 10 yards, exponentially harder every step after that. And RC was a mauler in the Steeler years. RC has a point but he is not saying it correctly. Henry is not really a violent runner is what he means. The issue is- very few if any of the RBs are. They truck and stiff arm in the open field 20 yds away from the line of scrimmage but very few are violent in the hole when it gets muddy. When there are bodies around and it gets dark. Those creatures existed last seen in the early 2000s. In the 70s and 80s. Marlon the Barbarian of the Cowboys was like that. He would run through everything that moves. It cost him his career cause he rralky only had like a 5 yr career but he didn't care if his wig was going to be split. He saw the hole and ran like a banshee. Walter Payton was the best ever at it. He was going to get the 3rd and 1 no matter what. You had to kill him to stop him from trying to run you over.

RC is actually correct. Henry doesnt "fall foward." He's a physical finesse player. He's not looking for contact like the bigger backs usually does. All u have to do is watch his highlights. It's a whole bunch of stiff arms. Not alot of up the middle, running threw arm tackles. But he's still a beast.
@lamara8497

@@chefdade5467 no it's not as a offensive playa via RB, wide receiver, TE etc... You don't want to get hit if your trying to score. As a running back you expect to get hit but if you can avoid it to score than that's what you will do. Henry is by far a beast. Don't down play that man because y'all feel he ain't physical enough. Check his stats and let me know if that's physical enough for you! He knows the contact is coming and he ain't scared of because he has a stiff arm that will put you on your ass. So his stiff arm ain't physical enough. Just say you don't like him but respect his game as a RB.

We really need a definition of a power back. Here's the thing, tons of guys we considered "power backs" never were big on "trucking" people over, they stiff arm and run through tackles. I think we should leave these people alone and just use the word "bruiser" or bruising back to describe a runner that runs people over.

I love Ryan Clark, he was so much fun to watch with the Steelers but dude CLEARLY doesn't know what he is talking about with Henry. I agree Henry has come up short on the short yardage plays. but once he gets to the 2nd level dude is 100% a power back you don't want to fit up against. He doesn't have as explosive of a first step as dudes like AP and Frank Gore but he has to be one of the hardest open field tackles to make. Clark is fitting him into this narrow definition of "power back" and I can't tell how much of that is him trying to make a hot take and how much is his inner LSU alum just hating on a Bama alum. I despise Bama but Henry is what a modern power back needs to be in the NFL

He is 100% not a power back at all. He doesn’t like to run up the middle. He likes to run to the outside and use his speed and stiff arm. When Titans used him as a power back he wasn’t good and they was thinking about getting rid of him. Till they start running him more to the outside. I don’t think I ever really seen him run someone over. Zeke right now is more of a power back then Henry.

@gndo9145 2 года назад
But don't you see how you are describing exactly what RC is saying? You use phrases like "when he gets to the second level"and "in the open field", but his point is what if I hit him before he gets that head of steam? RC's point is if you make contact before or at the line of scrimmage Henry doesn't get that 1-2 yards he's supposed to at that size. And I agree. Still a monster back, still King Henry, just a level to his game that isn't the best.

Derrick Henry is in a class of his own almost. He’s quite similar to Erick Dickerson in terms of running style. Possessing the skills to run around you, fast enough to blaze past you, and can run through you. But both run/ran very upright. RC is right to say Derrick Henry isn’t a behind the pads bruiser. He’s a distinctively skilled runner with amazing physical characteristics to do it all.
@marvinrhodesjr
@marvinrhodesjr 2 года назад
Why are they trying to act like they don’t get what RC is saying? Henry is not a power back in the true sense of the word. He’s not a bruiser. He’s a big back who can overpower (straight arm) smaller players one on one in open space. When he doesn’t have a clear path to the second level or isn’t in open space, he can be one of the easiest backs in the league to tackle. That doesn’t take away from his greatness. Every back has strengths and weaknesses. Saying he’s not a power back isn’t an insult, it just is what it is.
