Try Sam Cook 60 years ago .. He wrote, arranged the music, Sang the songs, played the instruments, Hired the musicians, Hired promotions & Marketing , created his Tours , Explained Copyrights & OWNING YOUR MASTERS- ect to the Likes of Fats Domino , Little Richard - Ray Charles and others. Only to be Triple Crossed by the (I)legal music industry who STOLE EVERYTHING by falsifying documents. Murder was the case as they sAvagely plotted his death from the beginning.
@@VHARDJO yea but you actually have to be “Drake” or similar to realistically recoup as well as profit and rinse/repeat…but if you are indie and not drake and just want to develop a fanbase to be your own boss then this model is more practical for the average artist
Na. You go platinum... You're features fee goes way up. Everyone wants platinum. Those records get played for ever, as of now 🤣. So royalties for as long as people listen to music? I'm down with that. But you best get that TITLE. Features and shows makes most revenue for any artist. Signed or unsigned
@@teebee7374 gotta disagree. I wi agree it won't work for most artist if their focus is only on the art and craft. If you begin with what he says...it will fall in place.

Fun fact; Ryan Leslie is from Stockton Ca, graduated from Bear Creek High School at the age of 15, went to Harvard on a full academic scholarship at the age of 16, and become one of the smartest if not the smartest producer, songwriter, artist ever!
@@ronnieturner6820 He went on a full academic scholarship so it was free. But on the other handto have the stability and foundation to be able to graduate high school @15 means you had some people in your corner. A lot of us ain’t got that.
Ryan is no dummy a true genius went to a Ivey league school top of his class. Dude real book smart just happened to love music and one of the most underrated producers. This guy is 🔥🔥🔥💯
Technology made all of it possible from inexpensive software to social media an artist can produce, create and market their music without greedy executives digging in their pockets.
You don’t need a record label in this day and age, record labels need artist to keep the lights on… All you need is social media presence, a tour manager, a entertainment lawyer, someone to run your merch, and maybe a publicist
Actually I think the Grateful Dead stated selling Tickets to there concerts directly to fans skipping the middleman,..Who just happed to be “Bill Gram”,..This pissed him off to the max,..Then KISS stated counting every ticket at the door of there concerts,..Why!,.. because they didn’t trust Bill Gram,..and they good reason not to!
I believe the Isley Brothers also had T NECK RECORDS . Tho the band was always Attached to a Major Label. Their Music, Rights & Publishing went through T NECK RECORDS not the MAJORS.... ONLY Distributing. I believe
Pimp C told everybody 25 years ago when he saw NY rappers being disrespectful. You sell a million albums and make a nickle a record. "Fk BET, I always go gold" ~Pimp C
Up close and personal, brings respect and trust to anyone who works for their money and is willing to trade it for anything. That dedication on both sides is always a win win
Never ever give up your publishing. If you have a hit record and you wrote it. You will always make some type of money. Give up your publishing you would be performing till the day you die. If anyone comes to see you!!!
Ryan Leslie is visionary. He spoke of music business going digital way before people could even adjust to the digital media. He predicted the culture of independent music and digital streaming long ago. Smart guy!
Now this is the content these RU-vid bloggers need to upload given game on how to move in the business world behind the scenes and how you can benefit staying independent all that other stuff y'all can keep
@@Flamerberge Jaguar Wright has been saying these things about specific people in the music industry for a long time. She has been proven right so far. I said she insinuated. Her past insinuations have turned out to be true. The public has more reason than ever to take what Jaguar Wright says seriously. We're not always going to have footage, man. Critical thinking is necessary.
@TARAdubbleyuu This. The denial, deflect, and disconnect is how abusers and predators get away with their shit. When people find out a family member, or spouse, or someone else close was/is abusing someone...there is shock and disbelief by some. Even when there are/were clear signs. Photo and video evidence won't always be there. It's unrealistic to think that it would be. As if the moments of abuse are predictable, or that a camera is or can always be conveniently available and positioned (without detection), or that going to police or someone else is always safe and possible. Or that tapping into courage is easier than leaning into survival and doing what feels safest. I really find it strange when people attempt to lean to prescriptive or theoretical arguments to explain why they have a hard time believing someone's story. It's like they don't understand how the nervous system works and how fear can keep people trapped. For a long time. Especially (ESPECIALLY) if an abuser has something of leverage to use against the person they're abusing. And, for those who read between the lines in Cassie's suit, she essentially helped highlight this fact. She stayed there were videos of her doing things with men. She stated she was told there were copies or ways to retrieve deleted videos. She mentioned sex workers were hired for her to sleep with. I wouldn't doubt some may not have been legal age especially when we factor in stories of Puff and a young Usher and Justin Beiber. Revenge porn is something used against many women as a method of control and abuse. Anyone that thinks Puff never threatened to leak any videos of cassie doing certain things, if she tried to leave or tell anyone, have never been in such a vulnerable or compromised situation. Similarly, I can imagine threats being made to kill her or her family, or cause them other types of harm. She was a young naive girl when she hit the scene. Her programming to be under the control of abusive twisted men began at 16-17 with Ryan Leslie and eventually escaped when she met Puff. Thinking Cassie would respond to the experiences of abuse in a perfect, ideal, prescriptive, or theoretical way is pure ignorance. There's a reason she was targeted and why most 16-17 year olds aren't recruited by dudes like Ryan Leslie (25-26 at the time) and then picked up by a 36-37 year old man at 19. Most men don't think or operate like them dudes and most females won't have Cassie's lived experiences with those guys. As well, most men will never know what it's like to be in a relationship dynamic with an extreme power embalance by being with someone who has an upper hand (leverage) due to age, money, wealth, astatus, lived experience, knowledge, sex, connections, etc. Add threats on top off that and becoming programmed to normalise and accept the abuse & dysfunction. Especially knowing the police and the abusers team will stand loyal to him over you. Most people wouldn't be able to navigate their way out of that. Chances are Cassie would still be tied to Puff, or dead, if not for Alex Fine intervening. Stories of abuse, especially on the extreme emd, are very nuanced, layered, and contextual. Why didn't she go to the police earlier, why did she stay, Where's the evidence (etc) are questions privileged people ask...privileged in that they never had a similar lived experience and likely never will. And that goes for most men and most women. Even most women who experienced abuse won't have this type of story. We're talking of a teen girl who got groomed and fed to a grown ass multi millionaire. People saying she was "grown" when she met Puff, 36-37, when she was 18-19. By that time, Puff been had how many kids, worked how many jobs, accumulated how much wealth, had how many properties, had how many serious long term relationships, had achieved how many accomplishments, and received how much knowledge and awards, and travelled to how many places and met how many people, and had how many staff (etc)? He was grown. Cassie was developing. 18-19 isn't grown. Most grown people don't put up with abuse because they know the signs and aren't easily controlled.
Best thing a music artist can do is get the email / phone numbers of their fans and have direct marketing to them and skip all that other shit. That’s pure money. Most these musicians aren’t on that though
He got the knowledge from R. Les though. Nip himself always gave Ryan credit for giving him game. R Les also developed a software app that Nipsey used to track your fans and reach out to them directly to them whenever they purchased your music online.
This is Brilliant … The Great Sam Cook is Smiling right now !! Also Prince , Tupac , Little Richard and Michael Jackson !! Wait .. how bout all Indigenous Artist Are !
Was telling guys this back in ‘93/94 era as an intern for Polydor/gram records. No one , I mean , no one listened when I broke down the math like this. My brother and I had a label and thought to invest in the artist and only take 5%-NO publishing. Mind you, this was the tape/CD era and we knew that “Napster” was just a day away. We were talking building servers then….
