Ryan Reynolds documents his first colonoscopy to raise awareness about cancer screening 

As a stage 4 colon cancer survivor I can’t applaud this enough. If I had my colonoscopy at 50 like my doctor told me to, I could have saved myself a year of chemotherapy and the fear of it coming back. My polyp turned tumor was 11 cm in size and cause the most severe anemia my doctor had ever seen. I am 5 years in remission….Thank God. GET YOU REAR IN GEAR! Get that colonoscopy!

I was 21 when I had my first colonoscopy. I had diarrhea, lots of blood in my stools and I was going every 5 seconds. I went for my colonoscopy and they found a cancerous polyp in my colon. It was HUGE. My gastroenterologist told me it would’ve been cancer within the next 6 months and it’s so surprising that I even had symptoms, most people don’t. I now have to get one done every 2 years to watch to make sure my polyps don’t grow back. It’s scary, but worth it because I’d rather be here than in a coffin. PLEASE GET YOUR COLONOSCOPIES DONE. IT IS LIFESAVING. ❤

Thank you for doing this Ryan. Normalizing the test especially for guys. My husband passed away from colon cancer at 45 on out 19th wedding anniversary. Our boys were 12 & 9 at the time. We were devastated to say the least.

My dad was diagnosed at 68 with colon cancer and died two years later. I'm 68 now and would likely have been in the same boat as he was if I hadn't had regular screenings (every 3-5 years) starting when I was 50. Polyps have been removed that likely would've turned cancerous. I just had my last screen a few months ago and got a clean bill of health. Don't procrastinate on this!

What these two guys did was awesome! They raised awareness about colon cancer ♋️. I've been getting regular colonoscopies since both of my parents passed away from cancer. Kudos fellas for showing that the process isn't all that bad 👏 🙄 👍

DO IT GUYS ! I thought it was appendicitis. I was diagnosed with malignant colon cancer in 2007 at the age of 61. Surgery, two weeks in the Hospital, 6 months of Chemo Therapy. Once every week for 1 1/2 hours. A port put in my chest so I could wear a fanny pack so I would have chemo at home then with follow up exams. Fortunately cancer free ever since. I just celebrated my 77th Birthday and so far, so good.

Having mine tomorrow absolutely starving but worth it if it saves your life well done lads .

Good for him. My ex husband died of colon cancer and it was totally unnecessary. I've had two, more than likely, because nothing was found, I've had my last, at my age. It's no big deal people. The prep is NOT hat bad, nothing to fear, and there is no need to die from colon cancer.

Stage 3 rectal cancer at 42. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. That was 12 years ago. Still suffering from life changing side effects from treatment. Get the test.

It needs to be 30. My dad had colon cancer (he’s still with me) and a friend of mine died of it, both were 30. I’ve had to have them bc of that, so I’ve had about 10. The prep is no fun but the procedure is super easy. It’s a nap. It’s so important to get it done though.

I am a 26 years old. Exercise daily and am at healthy weight. They found two advanced polyps. I had no symptoms and the only reason I went in was due to reading a study about the rise of colon cancer in younger people. I told them about my "symptoms" and was scheduled ASAP. Did you know that if you were born in 1990 you are 4x as likely to develop bowel cancer and 2x more likely to develop colon cancer than someone who was born in 1950? There is suggested to be a +100 % increased rate of younger Americans ages 20-39 with a CRC diagnosis by 2030. This is by no means an older persons disease anymore, It is the most preventable cancer possible and yet is the cancer with the 3rd soon to be second highest mortality rate. We need to wake up and advocate for early screenings. Polyps on average take 10-15 years to develop into cancer and there are people being diagnosed with stage 4 well before 50.. do the math people! Stay diligent and monitor your body and take care of business! Peace and blessings!

I’m 49 and just diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer that has metastasized to lining of abdominal wall and am being told it’s been there quite a while. With treatment they are giving me about 2 years. How I wish 45 was told to me instead of 50….

I had one as an emergency 30 years ago when I was 39 and they found pre-cancer pulpits! I have no doubt I’m still here because of this. I have had at least 15 since and more pre-cancer pulips but still here!

I am 38 and just got my first one , i had a few large polyps , one was large and causing me issues such as blood and abdominal pain..glad i got it taken care of

My grandmother had regular colonoscopies and while she had several polyps, she never got cancer. But she hated getting them so much that my mom was scared off of them, and never had one until she was almost 80 and anemic. They found a lemon-sized tumor and it turned out to be stage 3 colon cancer. She underwent 6 months of chemo and she's clear now, but that got me off MY duff and I had my first colonoscopy just this year at 49. I got the all-clear and really, Dr. Lapook and Gayle are right, the procedure itself is a breeze! (Hot tip, get the good fluffy soft TP for prep)

I am so glad to see this story. My cousin (who was literally my sister) died of colon cancer at 52 years old. I truly believe that if she had gone at 45 to have the colonoscopy she would still be here with us. Please go get a colonoscopy done! Pamela

My father died of colon cancer at 57 I had my first one at 37 and every 5 years after that I'm 55 they did find polyp at 50 and removed 5 of them I had no symptoms.

This is great! I just had mine a few months ago and it was so easy. Im 51. Thank goodness I had no polyps. A friend of mine got diagnosed with colonrectal cancer at @34. She is so fit and young so Dr’s would diagnose it as something else. Finally a Dr. insisted she get a colonoscopy where it was diagnosed. Be your own advocate no matter how old you are.

I had my first colonoscopy earlier this year and it was so incredibly simple and utterly painless. the prep is no fun, but it isn't terrible. and the peace of mind from knowing is priceless. kudos to Ryan, Rob, and other celebs (like Katie Couric) for helping bring awareness to this issue. if you are 45 or older (or have cancer in your family): GET A COLONOSCOPY. i promise you will not regret it.

_I'll admit I was going to click on this just seeing 'Ryan Reynolds' and 'colonoscopy' in the same title._ But in all sincerity I was hit with a very aggressive stage 4 cancer diagnosis a year ago and I'm taking all precautions even though there has never been cancer in any family tree branch. I was scheduled for a colonoscopy a few months ago but chemo and sickness interfered and now I'm scheduled in a month. I won't be filming it, no poo cam for me!, but it is such a simple procedure and I am glad that someone like Ryan Reynolds took the time to film it to get the word out. Of course I'm starting to think my fan appreciation of Ryan Reynolds is becoming obsessive as I also switched to Mint mobile!! 😆

im 35, going tuesday for my second colonoscopy, my first was when i had it when i was 18. cancer can happen at any age. more doctors need to understand and not dismiss people just because of their age regardless of the family history speaking from experience

As someone who's been getting colonoscopies since I was 9 years old(I turn 40 tomorrow)they honestly are not as bad as everybody thinks they are. Probably the few things you need to remember is the prep sucks probably always will and the day of the procedure don't do anything except ReDiscover your bed and make it your best friend.

Getting mine in November. This is my 3rd. I get one every five years. One of my brothers died of colon cancer at 59. He put off getting one after he had been hospitalized. Eight months after this he was hospitalized again and this time he didn't have a choice about it. They found out he had cancer. He had to have surgery and he ended up with a colostomy bag. I don't remember how long he had to have chemotherapy for but I think if he had done the test when he was supposed to there's a possibility that he'd still be here.

I had my first one at 50 at a Mayo Clinic. They found precancerous cells and removed them. The doctor said I saved my own life. I had another one 3 years later. They found a few small polyp’s and removed them. Had another one 2 years later and that one was clean. I’ll go every 2 to 3 years to stay on top of it. The prep is the worst though.

Having a colonoscopy is giving you a piece of mind. I had mine last October and I did it without sedation thanks to father God for giving me his strength to get through it. Now, I’m feeling so relieved because I’m proactive in my health.

Thank you, Ryan and Rob, for being courageous and allowing us into your "personal space" for your colonoscopies. I had my first one at about your age because my father had polyps. My dearest friend died of colon cancer, and she had had colonoscopies. I've had polyps as well, but not for a number of years. I will still continue to get them as directed by my doctors. All I can say to those who don't want the test is this: you don't want to go through what colon cancer patients go through, believe me.

The first time they mentioned the doctor, I heard his name as Dr. LaPoop, and I thought it was brilliant. Actually brilliant is Ryan Reynolds using his platform in this way, because he’s right, it really will save lives.

I've had two and about to get my third. The procedure itself is no big deal. They found some non cancerous polyps do on the 3 year visits not 5.

Think of it this way: it is a great cleanse and a great sleep! The prep can be over the counter products or Rx products, whatever your Dr. prescribes. Really people just do it. I had a colonoscopy 10 yr ago, all clear and I just had one this year. They found was a 10 cm polyp that had a good change of becoming cancer. I will go back in 3 years for another. Just Do It!

I have one every year, I am 58 now started at 45, because I have had polyps on my colon. I hate the drink. You have to drink before you have the test. I wonder if Ryan liked it.

I just had my first one and it was no big deal. Much better than a pap or mammogram.

I am 62 and I’ve had two done. The prep liquid is annoying but we’ll worth it. The day before my prep is fasting and that makes it easier, I don’t eat anything the entire day other then liquids and some clear broth.

I had mine at 19 combined with an endoscopy (thankfully everything came back fine) and the procedure itself really isn't that bad. You're in and you're out. Also, if you have a uterus, *do not* go pee before arriving! They'll make you take a pregnancy test beforehand and because I didn't know that, I had to get IV fluids to go and it delayed my procedure by an hour. Apart from my pregnancy test delay, everything was smooth sailing from there. The prep is annoying but not impossible. Thankfully I got the gatorade miralax/ dulcolax prep. It made me a little nauseous at first from having to drink so much fluid at once (ngl my anxiety over the possibility of even getting nauseous beforehand probably exacerbated it). By the second round of it, it was easier to tolerate. But yeah, after the prep is done you're in and you're out after a nice nap. Just follow the directions of what to avoid eating the week/ day leading up to the procedure so that they don't miss anything and so you don't have to repeat the prep process.

I had a colonoscopy at 41 because I had cervical cancer at the age at 39 and had a hysterectomy so when I got my colonoscopy they found a few polyps in there they removed it right away.

I got my done 2 times last december and did surgery. I was so depressed thinking why me? But then I got to know that this is very common in many asian countries and employees need to submit their report every 6 months or 11 months to their employer.

21 years old. I have been chronically constipated for a month and a half. Just saw the Gastro doc today and they ordered one for me on the first of July this year. I had a CT scan when I went to the hospital and they didn't find anything serious but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I love that he does this and I also wish they would not ignore the prep. Avoiding prep is a huge reason people don't get a colonoscopy. I also wish they wouldn't ignore the fact that people with some histories can have pain after. Women who've had hysterectomy have more pain during the procedure and that needs to be accounted for in giving anesthesia.. ignoring the people who have real reasons to be very apprehensive just.....sucks. Address those realities, tell people how they can prepare and maybe avoid the potential complications. These PSAs make me feel even more invisible and dismissed as someone with an invisible disability and chronic pain that is very likely to be made worse by a colonoscopy. The fact that no one will acknowledge that I have real concerns and treats me like a normal cookie cutter patient is what is causing me HUGE anxiety.

I have to get scopes upper and lower all the time because I have gastroparesis, short gut, and EoE…basically my gut doesn’t work. I depend on a feeding tube in my intestine and IV line in my chest. Everyone freaks out about this procedure, but it’s really not that bad. The prep for me is just another Tuesday because, with short gut everything in my intestine moves ridiculously fast on a normal day. All you have to do is go in, take a medically induced nap, and it could mean the difference between life and death. Please don’t let fear or vanity or not wanting someone to see that part of you keep you from getting checked. Colon cancer kills, and this quick procedure could help save your life so you can watch your kids and grand kids grow up. I’m 36 and I’ve had so many scopes I’ve lost count.

FFS, I've had 20 rare complex incurable and intractable chronic pain diseases and health problems that span over a dozen fields of medicine and subspecialty fields since age 15. I'm 32 now. My first colonoscopy and endoscopy was at 15. I've had at least a dozen colonoscopies and 3-4 edoscopies.

Ask your doc about the Gatoraid prep for colonoscopy - much easier to handle. Get it done folks!

Been on a waiting list to get in for screen for over a year. I'm age 50. Doesn't seem like they can get people through at the age of 50 so not sure how they are going to get younger people done. Need to hire more doctors, a year long wait list for this procedure doesn't seem very helpful.

I just turned 73 and had my first colonoscopy in probably more than a decade. Which was too long at my age, but fortunately they only found a few non-problematic polyps that proved negative after biopsy. The procedure was nothing…I was in lalaland…but the prep wasn’t pleasant for me. I should have camped on the toilet so that I wouldn’t have had so many “oops” on the way from my recliner to the bathroom. That wasn’t really discussed much here. But a little short term discomfort in exchange for a clean bill of health was definitely worth it. Kudos for raising awareness.
