@Maita Mungah what? Did you just say Bryson Tiller came out before OVO? His career didnt even start before the label let alone Partynextdoor or The Weeknd (when he was offiliated with OVO)... he didnt even come before drake IS OVO lol. The BIGGEST influence on all Trap&B genre (in which Bryson is a product of) is Partynextdoor, so the beginning of this song, beat selection the way hes flowing at the beginning literally sounded like a PND song to me. Then his last verse is LITERALLY a Drake type of flow
@Maita Mungah Okay I like how you clarified some things. Truthfully I enjoy debating R&B b/c some of my favourite artists period are r&b artists + I'm from Toronto & at least we gotta admit that Toronto artists and that sound and dark melodic introspective crooning is R&B & more generally what hiphop music sounds like today. Also, I am sure we can agree we would love to see these R&B artists (PND, Bryson) drop more projects. I guess where I feel I need to provide correction is when I say OVO and its influence, I don't just mean the label which started in 2012, but also the sound of the artists they sign and have ties with (The Weeknd, Drake, PND, Roy Woods, Majid Jordan) & how that sound is curated a certain way and THAT sound being the influence of Trap&B and R&B more generally today. My thing with PND & his influence is this... We cannot sleep on how popping and refreshing his music was 2013-2014 (particularly PND 2 and the loosies that came out around that time like Persian Rugs, West District, etc, which were flawless imo), took the trust issues/ marvin's room version of Drake + blended it with trap sounding beats and cadence. But when he took that extended break from 2014-2016 so early in his career (and he pretty much is STILL ghost ever since, which is annoying), I believe it created room for someone else to take that mold and repurpose it (perhaps in a more polished, commercial way) = thus we get Bryson Tiller's Don't & his whole first album. I really like Bryson as an artist & I liked his second album when a lot of ppl didn't. BUT I gotta keep it real his formula we've seen/ heard before.. and the trickle down effect of that sound applies to Ryan Trey too (even if Ryan Trey seems more Bryson Tiller-ish).
Maita Mungah He came after OVO. OVO started popping in 2011. Bryson started popping in 2015-2016. He took they style and added his own flavor to it, hence “Trap Soul.”
