Air rage is at an all-time high this summer, the chief executive of Ryanair has said, with Michael O’Leary blaming the high level of flight delays across Europe this summer - together with growing numbers of passengers taking drugs as well as alcohol.
As passenger disruption soars, the boss of Europe’s biggest budget airline has called for a two-drink limit to be imposed at airports across Europe.
Speaking to The Independent, Mr O’Leary said: “We are seeing record numbers. We and most of the airlines around Europe are seeing a spike upwards, particularly this summer, of disgruntled passengers on board.
“I think the real challenge is: flight delays are up at a record high this summer, so people are spending time in airports drinking before they board aircraft.”

Passengers drink in the airport, which is not good for my sales on the aeroplane

I was on a flight from Birmingham to Alicante on Friday afternoon. There was a large group of males who had clearly consumed alcohol prior to departure. The cabin crew served them beer throughout the flight. Their behaviour was just about tolerable until 30 minutes prior to landing. One of them became so drunk that he was staggering up and down the aisle. The others tried to restrain him and this developed into a brawl. The cabin crew tried to diffuse the situation. Amazingly after this cabin crew continued to serve them cans of beer. Throughout the flight many of the m had been wondering up and down the aisle with opened cans of beer. I don’t expect cabin crew to put themselves in a confrontational situation but why 1) did they continue to serve them beer right up to 15 minutes before landing. 2) Why didn’t they switch on the seat belt sign in an attempt to control them. I questioned the main cabin crew member about why alcohol was continued to be served. He said they had no choice. I consider that Michael O’Leary needs firstly to put his own house in order.

Why not concentrate on reducing the amount of delayed flights so people will spend less time drinking at airports

They would if they could, delayed flights cost the airline money. Usually its completely out of their hands unfortunately

Delays are very rarely airline error, it's weather, service and bags. RA actually rank quite well for delays, significantly above BA for instance.

Delays cost airlines a fortune. They hate them. You run an airline and see how hard it is!😊

why are people so insistent that they should have more than two drinks before a flight?

Perhaps deterrence is better. If a person gets on a plane and disrupts it and/or the plane had to land to remove them, place that person on a banned flying list for a year or two - or more if they have been violent. Not just on the airline where they committed the act, but they are banned across all airlines for that period. If this were strictly enforced - and if it were warned as part of the safety briefing at the beginning of flights - it would act as a positive deterrent. It also means that the vast majority of passengers who enjoy a few drinks without disruption can go about their ways.

He's one of the main reasons people are now forced to sit at airports for hours, between check-in and boarding, all in a scheme to make people waste more money at the overpriced "tax free" services. The cause isn't the people, it's your greed, Michael.

@@user-wi1xw5sd1c Nah, if few people check in, they close security screen stations. They'll always make sure you're worried about getting stuck at the security check stations.

He makes flying affordable for people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to. Not just that, but as a CEO he’s required to make as much money for his company as possible. What should he do, shrink the business and make less money just to satisfy you?

@@anthonypearson6759 Yeah book a flight to Morocco and the flight lands just a little bit outside of the desired destination, in Greece.
