Ryobi 14.4v Slide On Battery Upgrade
For the 14.4v and 18v Ryobi slide-on batteries you will need the following parts so just copy and paste the part numbers and link into your browser (At a later date I post live links)
Bridge Rectifier & Smoothing Circuit (The 3A version is fine for the Ryobi 14.4v and 18v charger)
AliExpress Item 1005005606436569
Note: This rectifier board can also be used for the 18v Ryobi battery charger but I recommend you upgrade the capacitor on this board from a 3300uf 25v capacitor to a 3300uf 35v as the output voltage on the 18v Ryobi charger transformer is slightly higher and therefore could exceed the 25v limit of the capacitor once it is converted to DC voltage causing it to explode.
This board goes inside your original battery charger once you removed the original Ryobi board from the charger.
5Amp Step Down Charging Board - Select the Red version with 2 variable resistors-
Product code: XL4015 Red
AliExpress Item 20000001750938
For the 14.4v Ryobi charger adjust the output to around 17.5V and adjust the current to 1A using the blue variable resistors.
For the 18v Ryobi charger adjust the output to around 20.5V and adjust the current to 1A using the blue variable resistors.
You can play around with the charging current a little bit but I found my batteries charge safely at 1A without any heating issues whatsoever.
This board goes inside your original battery charger once you removed the original Ryobi board from the charger.
Both the above boards are from the seller so I recommend you put them in your AliExpress basket and pay for them both at the same time so you benefit from combined postage.
4S BMS for the 14.4V Ryobi Batteries
AliExpress Item 1005006186559028
You will need a 5S BMS for the Ryobi 18v batteries which you can purchase from the same webpage as the 4S version
The BMS goes inside your battery casing and stays there for the life of the battery and is used to monitor your battery and keep it safe.
Best quality cells for this application are Panasonic NCR18650BD - 18650 Battery - 3100mAh
www.cellsupply.co.uk
You will need 4 Panasonic cells for the Ryobi 14.4v batteries and 5 cells for the Ryobi 18v batteries.
Battery Cell holders - I used these cell holders for 14.4v batteries and they should work with the 18v batteries too.
AliExpress Item 1005003120099808
You will also need a battery spot welder, multimeter and soldering iron etc.
Any other questions just message me and I will do my best answer.
Please note that although my charger and batteries are working fine you do this project at your own risk so please take the necessary safety precautions. My advice is to have this work done by a qualified electrician.

This is almost exactly what I'm looking for! I just rescued a bunch of old Ryobi tools that were going to be thrown out as there are no batteries and people couldn't find them. I'm no electrician though. Would you be willing to make some of these up and sell them?

Hi, Right now I am not making any for other people but that might change in future. Perhaps you can let me know the model numbers of your Ryobi tools?

@Neo1968Man that's a shame! Sure, I have CMS-1801 chop saw, a CW-1801/150 skill saw, a STP-1801 drill, a CRS-1801/D recip saw and a FL-18 light

@@cameronspringett8268 Yes, I know which batteries you have. These Ryobi slide-on batteries are not made anymore which is why I had to upgrade my batteries. So your batteries are essentially the same as the ones I am showing in the video except yours are Ryobi 18v slide on batteries (5 lithium cells ide) and not Ryobi 14.4v (4 lithium cells inside). That means you would just require one more cell inside your batteries and a small adjustment on the new circuit inside your charger which is easy to do. I will make a note of it now and perhaps you can contact me in a few months to see if I have time to do this upgrade for you.

@@Neo1968Man that would be brilliant, as I have 0 batteries at the moment and can't even find many for sale so I can't use the tools at all!

@@cameronspringett8268 I see. So you would need to find a battery and charger first. The 14.4v slide-on batteries are easier to find and cheaper and although I am not certain I think there is a chance the 14.4v slide-on battery will fit your 18v Ryobi tools ( but please check this first). There is enough space inside the 14.4v battery to take the extra cell so it can be upgraded to 18v. There are some 14.4v batteries on ebay and Facebook Marketplace now if you search. See ebay listing number 256443610925 for the 18v battery See ebay listing number 276374921884 for the 14.4v battery See ebay listing number 225994741959 for the charger

@@matthewartherton970 - Matthew, see the AliExpress item numbers in the section just below the video. Click on "more" and you will see them. I can not put live links in yet but I will add those later. Instead I have put the AliExpress item numbers which you can just copy and paste into the AliExpress search box and click on search. You will then see the item. Let me know if I can be of any further help and I hope your upgrade goes well.

Thanks Richard much appreciated. I’m up for giving this ago but may contact you for more advice at some point, maybe some diagrams to make sure I’m doing this correctly, I have the 18v version, well I have four so if you need 1 or 2 just let me know.

@@matthewartherton970 Matthew, let me know when you are ready to do your upgrade and I will do a second video with more detail and with some diagrams so you know how to connect everything. That's very kind of you to offer me a battery and perhaps we will do a battery giveaway together at a later date to one of my subscribers.
