The 18v trimmer you can respool it without buying the cartridge. I bought a 2mm line as the 1.6mm is so tiny. So the 2mm I've used works well. Doesn't reduce efficacy and cutters better with the thicker line. Hope this helps
On the non-brushless model, you don't actually have to pick up the trimmer and turn it upside down to extend the line. While using it in its normal position, just wait for it to slow down to a stop. Press the trigger, you will hear it spin up and also it should click a little, only press the trigger the briefest moment and it will then let out some line automatically, do this about 3-4 times to get it out to full length again. The biggest downside to the non-brushless model is how quickly the 1.6mm line gets chewed up, I don;t have a big yard and still tare through the line at a rapid rate, because of this I am already looking for a bigger whipper snipper to handle thicker line, this is why I ended up on this video for the comparison and the twin lines that are also thicker on the brushless model look like a lot better option.
You can shop around for better quality line, however it’s not an expensive thing to replace. Having the line trimmer with the bump feed line always means you are cutting to the machines max capacity. The other option has a blade that wears down over time meaning your cutting ability will reduce over time until that blade is replaced.
My blue version of the smaller model works with the thicker string. Lasted all season with one wind-up. I generally have 20 minutes of edging on a larger property.
If you line the arrows up on the line hub (brushless). You can feed the line straight through and then wind it up. No need to do the line like you did. The other model the line comes out when you release and then pull the trigger again.
I’ve had the smaller one for 6 years and have just bought a new one pretty much the same but it takes 2mm line! They both have a telescopic shaft! And 6years warranty you can’t go wrong!
Good comparisons guys. I bought the smaller one you show, about a month ago, but after pulling it from the box I knew it wouldn't do what I needed. So i went back to bunnings and bought a newer model18v Brushless straight trimmer. I can adjust the handle a lot more than the one shown but it also is part of the expand it range. So I got the edger attachment also. The weed eater also has easy-feed for the line now, so no need to take the bump-feed head off. Both work great and I use a few beefy (and HP) batteries to do longer jobs. Thanks for the reviews!
Where on earth do you get the expand it range ? I checked the Ryobi shop and don't see the expand it range. I do see the brush cutters with interchangeable string wire or TriArc cutting disc.
I always had good luck with my 2 line Ryobi trimmer. I just had to replace it with a 1 line trimmer which is supposed to advance the line automatically. Bollocks! I miss the bump and go 2 line trimmer.
the small was actually has a auto feed. Let off the trigger, when its almost stop, squeeze the trigger to full rpm and more string should come out. At least thats how it is on my model that looks the same. Other than that very good. Thanks Thanks
Hey appreciate the video review. Could you please review the 18V HP 26CM Brush Cutter from Ryobi, the £230 one with the bike handlbars and harness. It has a 26CM Triarc cutting disc or 2.4mm line with a bump feed spool. ????
When you bump feed the line for the first time (sometimes but not all the time) when the line spins around for the first time it will get cut to the correct length.
Good comparison. I’m thinking of re-investing in a line trimmer, but am suspicious of electric models, having had two bad experiences with corded models overheating to the point of melting their housings within minutes of being turned on! And both were “name” brands. So I’m wondering if the battery cordless models are susceptible to similar issues? My option is either petrol models or a 2-stroke mower. Again, leery of electric mowers for the above reasons. One thing yo didn’t mention was the ergonomics of the trimmers. The smaller one looks like it could be murder on the lower back. The steel frame looks better suited in maintaining an upright position.
Battery operated tools get warm. But I have never had a problem with it over heating. I use it on a small section for about 10 minutes. Not sure what would happen if you needed to use it for longer.
I have the better of these two and happy with it for home use. Not for business/intense/continuous use though. On the other hand I had a Ryobi electric mower - the expensive one - still junk.
Ok a big thankyou for sharing this vid, but i am going to be brutally honest,,that cheaper model you demostrated is a kids toy and its a bloody joke and embarrassing, i purchased that model and i was shocked, after the 1st day of using it, i could not believe what i was operating, my wife and i could not believe ryobi made such a silly,stupid,and idiotic product, i smashed it against a brick wall and its in pieces,,what a waste of money seriouslyyyyyyyyy, i purchased the other more expensive ryobi battery operated model and its a gem,,you get what you pay for and its so very true,,to your viewers who are reading this , plz do not waste your time and money on that cheaper model,,,,what a jokeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Hi , Love your Ryobi videos , I am thinking to buy a One+ Line Trimmer and Blower kit , knowing they both using 18V 4ah battery , can I use the One+ Driller 18V 2ah battery on both the Trimmer or Blower ?
You can use any size RYOBI 18V battery on any RYOBI 18V compatible tool. The run time and performance of the tool will vary depending on the battery size.
