Well, now you have a 20 inch Ryobi to replace your husband in the garden. Ryobi's are very impressive ... may all of your replacements be as successful !!
Ryobi has come a long way, i had mixed feelings when i first got ryobi lawn mowers like this with it being pain sometimes. But im glad ryobi has improved their batteries and lawn mowers since then.
I would agree with you on that. I had an older version of one of their first cordless drills, and I was not impressed. But now I have a lot of them and the quality is so much better. Having to bring these tools to a job and not having to look for an outlet to plug a cord into. Thanks for watching my video. Norman
@@user-xw4vg1vy5e your correct. Ryobi has since added a self propelled mower and the look has changed. I saw yesterday that they have 13" mower that uses the one + battery
Thanks, Norm. I just bought a new Ryobi and it has one major difference from the one you show. There is a safety mechanism to sense whether a mulching plug or bagging attachment is installed and the motor will not run if neither is. To implement this, the mulching plug and bagging attachment each have a metal hoop that snaps into a slot on top of the mower body at the back. The problem I am having is that the two notches in my mulching plug don't align with the two tabs on the back of the mower body and I can't get the mulching plug to "lock" in. The hoop does not keep seated in the slot and works its way out and the motor cuts out after mowing for just a few minutes. I can press the mulching plug back down into the slot (it moves by less than 1mm) and the mower will restart, but then it works its way out after a few minutes again. I don't have this problem with the bagging attachement since it does not interact with those two tabs on the back of the mower body.
When you put the plug into the rear discharge opening are you locking it into the notch on the bottom? If its not locked into it that might make it loose enough to move out of place and make it stop. The plug has the piece with a lip that has to slide to the left in order to hold in place. Thats on the new style 20" version. The 21" version, the plug just sits in a slot and you would push down the lever to lock it in place. Other factors to think about is if the grass your cutting is high and your mower is on a low height setting and thus more grass is pushing up against the plug. Try setting the height up maybe 1 or 2 notches just to see if the problem goes away. Let me know what happens and thank you again for watching my channel
This is my new toy the Ryobi lawnmower. It was shipped from Georgia to buffalo ny and right now it’s been raining a lot so I haven’t used it. My girl friend next door has one and I used hers to cut my grass 2 was ago and fell in love with the mower,I ask her would she be up set it I got one and she replied no that she would recommend it to anyone so that’s how I decide to get one.
Thank Stella, Thats a great purchase and you will have years of mowing with that mower. If you have a lot of trees like I do here in idaho they have a leaf mulcher that uses the same battery. Thats my next video. Take care Norman
Very helpful. The manuals Ryobi provided have small print and are only helpful if you know what you're doing. I'm on my 2nd electric mower (1st Ryobi) and thought getting this mower up and running would be more intuitive. Again, very helpful video. Thanks Norm.
Thank you! Your video should be included with the purchase of a Ryobi lawnmower!! First video of yours I’ve watched…. Just subscribed and will probably spend the afternoon watching your other ones!!!
Thank you Karen, I'm glad it helped you. I'm doing more videos. Just been real busy with work. I have probably this month and then my lawnmower will go back in my barn ad the weather will be changing here in idaho Thanks Norman
You're welcome Andi, The Ryobi mowers are great. I'm still using the one from my video. They're a great investment. Thanks for watching my video Norman
I do have another video comparing this mower with a newer mower and on the newer one I do show how to install the side discharge. Thank you for watching my video.
Thats great Jerry, the newer models have some slight differences. Like the bag now locks in place . But the main pieces are very similar. Glad you like the video. Thanks Norman
@@normscorner6047 Yep, I noticed that! I also spent a good few seconds searching around the handles for that red part of the handle lock that your mower featured, lol. I think that would have been a handy thing to keep. Regardless, had a good first mowing! It cuts the grass evenly, it’s fairly quiet and I mowed my whole yard on a single battery charge!
Have you chemically treated the underside of the deck in order to keep grass clumps from forming? Have you changed out the blade or removed it for sharpening?
I have not done any treatment under the deck. I will take an old putty knife and clean it up once a month. But I've never had any clumps build up underneath. I have changed the blade once. I am still using this same mower from the video and the same battery. Thank you for watching my video
Hi Richard, You could use a hose on the underside. But I would recommend using a blower and a scraper to clean off the grass that might cake on the undercarriage. I just wouldn't want any water in the battery compartment Thanks Norman
Hi Norm I purchased this right it'll be lawn mower a couple days ago right now I went to go to try to use the mulcher and there's no mulching part and they're all so there's no back to the to the lawn mower I don't understand I'm going to have to call Home Depot in Stratford Connecticut thank you for your show of how to use this lawn mower
Hi Mary, If you have the most recent model then the mulcher part is a separate part that's not included with the mower. You can order it from Home Depot. It's not something they will have in store. Hope this helps you Thanks for watching my video. Norman
Thanks for posting I just purchased one but I don’t think it’s self propelled, I bought the cheaper one. I really don’t have that much grass at all. I have my battery charging now can’t wait to try it out in the morning
They came out with the self propelled version last year. I think you will be very pleased with your mower. Remember to adjust your level. The mower in the box is set at the lowest point
Norm's Corner thanks again. I put the battery in today to test it and it works it’s very quiet. I got mine on a clearance so it for sure not self propelled but I don’t have much grass.
Good video. Wondering where I locate the red button? Do I need to unscrew a piece? I did not put this together so I’m unsure but my mower is not working.
Hi Kristin, Thank you for watching my video. I've noticed that there have been several people on here with the same problem. I can trouble shoot with you. Forgive me on some of the questions I ask. Battery is fully charged? Battery is completely pushed and connected? The red key which is the safety key is in and completely connected? If you had your mower stored for the winter did you have it in an area that would keep mice or rodents from getting at it? The red button is at the bottom of the handle but it's attached to the mower. When the handle in that area is locked in place it should be pressing that button down. The 2 clip handles at the bottom also need to be turned and locked in place. Half way up the 2 gray plastic clips also need to be completely snapped in place. The mower I have in my video is the same one I have today and I have not had any problems like this. Getting back to the mice issue. If the area has this issue where it was stored, it's possible that mice may have chewed on the wires. If that is not the issue then I would contact ryobi as these mowers come with either a 3 or 5 year warranty.
Hi thanks for the info out the box my battery was showing only two blocks lit up and have been plugging it in for the past 5 hours and it hasn't changed not sure if that is normal
That is not normal. Make sure the battery is fully connected to the charger. How old is the battery? They have a limited 3 year warranty. You have to call Ryobi as I don't think Home Depot will warranty it unless you pay for their extended warrany
The newer versions of the RY40108 20 in mower has a different grass catcher mount, light assy, and a few other physical differences. Not sure if they are better or not.
I'm happy with the one I have from my video. The grass catcher seems sturdier and I haven't had a need to use the lights when mowing lol. I know they came out with a self propelled version and I have seen this small 13" version that uses the 18 volt batteries. I won't get a new one until this one stops working. So far it's going great.
The battery is ready when the green light stops blinking. They don't need 12 hours to charge up. Couple things you can do. Take the battery off the charger. If you have the battery with the button to push to see how much power you have, then see if it shows it is fully charged. The other could be that the battery is not completely pushed into the charger. Sometimes you may miss the connection and you just need to take the battery off the charger and then just push it back in again and the green light will start blinking. Hope this helps. If it doesn't it could be a defective charger or battery.
@@normscorner6047 OK I did that....still flashing red and green. Do I have to take back the whole lawn more or do you think I can just exchange battery
If both lights are flashing then you have a defective battery. I would call the store first to make sure they will exchange the battery. If you just opened it from the box brand new they should be able to replace the battery. I would bring the charger and put the replacement battery on it to make sure it's not the charger.
Hi, the video appears as 3 years old, so how has the battery held up? Average run time now? Also, are the off-brand replacement batteries any good that you're aware of? I am seriously considering buying this lawnmower soon. Thanks!
Hi Mark, I'm actually going to do a review of this same mower. It works great. The battery is holding up well. Haven't notice a major decline in the battery. I have other ryobi batteries that have lasted a very long time and I'm still using them. I'm not aware of any off brand batteries that can be used on this mower Thanks Norman
Hi my mower doesn’t start. I made sure arm is at correct height and everything is set to correct position. Light comes on and self driving works. It just doesn’t power on. Any advice greatly appreciated.
I'm going to go through some steps. I apologize if some are pretty obvious. First remove the battery . Next make sure there is nothing blocking the blade from turning. If the lights and the self propel works then it's not the battery. But just to make sure do you have another battery that you could plug in just to see if you get the same results. If you don't have an extra one, don't go buying another. Did you buy this brand new? If yes you need to register the mower on ryobi's website so you have a record for warranty. Getting back to the blade. If new from the box they set the mower to the lowest setting. Move it up about half way just incase it to low. Make sure the red key is sitting in properly. To get the blades to move you need to pull the metal bail towards the handle first, then push the start button. There are sensors on the mower that if the mower is at a awkward angle it might not start for safety reasons. Lastly the mower will not start unless you have either the grass catcher or mulcher attached to the back. Let me know if any of them work for you
I just bought self propelled Ryobi 20" mower. The mower starts but the blades aren't working. I was able to mow for about 5 minutes before they stopped. Any ideas what the problem might be?
Hi Elaine, So the self propelled require that you push the button and it has to engaged then you pull up on the green handles. Make sure the discharge bag is also secure. Hope that helps. Let me know and I will help you. Thanks Norman
I have another question. Is it best to keep the battery charged at all times? I only used one green light to mow the front yard. Should I charge the battery or wait until it is lower?
If you fully charged the battery and only used enough to go down one bar then you would be ok to not charge it until it drains down to one bar. Where this could back fire on you is if you were to mow your backyard and it need 4 bars to complete both yards. At the end of your mowing season charge up your battery and then if you kept the box it came in, just store it in a cool and dry place until your ready next season.
Mulching is where the blades cut the grass but the grass drops back onto the ground. In the case of my mower in this video it requires the plug to be installed and then your good to go with no bag. But the newer models may not come with the mulcher in which case you have to order that separately. My guess is that mulching is not the most popular method and thus they removed it from the box. Thats just my opinion. My mulcher piece is sitting in the same place I left it after this video. LOL
Norm's Corner Yeah I noticed my new mower was a little different but your video still showed me how to get it up and running without having to read the manual. I probably still should but at least to get me mowing quickly your video was exactly what I was looking for.
I have the latest model 20" 40v. and it came with the mulching plug already installed (to save space, as you say) and locked in place. The thing is I cannot figure out how the lock is supposed to be disengaged from its current position. I have tried lifting and pulling to no effect other than frustration. Is there some other catch I am missing?
The mulcher should have a handle extended outward and a metal bar above that holds up against the mower. You should only have to lift with the handle upwards and that should unlock it from discharge area. Depending on how tight fit it is you may need to nudge it a bit to loosen it up. Thanks for watching my video.
Belay that. I had been reluctant to put too much muscle into pulling but finally thought since nothing else was working I'd give it one last shot. The plug finally disengaged. I'm wondering now just how effective the locking bar is but will have to see. Thank you, Norm.
I don't believe the 20" version bar moves like it does in the 21" version. The mower isn't in my opinion having a strong enough force that it would knock the plug off. Maybe if it hits or picks up a hard object that was left in the grass
I'll see what I can find out. The lights on these mowers are more for aesthetic purposes. I will be honest I never mowed in the night or early morning so perhaps some people do.
Hi Alan, A friend of mine purchased a new Ryobi lawn mower that came with the 6 ah battery. I noticed that the battery was taller and I knew right away that the battery mounting was the same but that battery was not going to fit my mower. However Ryobi does make a 6 ah battery low profile that will fit our older mower. It's model OP4060A. Ryobi redesigned there mower to use this larger battery as they also have the 7.5 ah battery as well. Hope this helps you. Thanks Norman
Hi Alan, What made the 40504 not fit? Was it to high or did the connect not work? All the yard tools don't have battery compartments except for the mowers. Not really understanding why some of the batteries are not interchangeable but when the design changes some of the batteries have to sit a certain way that make the batteries not as interchangeable with older power equipment. Thank you for the update. Norman
Lubricating your mower would be the users preference. If your storing it outside you may need to. In the 4 plus years I have had mine. I have not had a need to use lubricant on my mower.
@@normscorner6047 yeah work fine brand new last summer... I just took it out from the shed, battery fully charge, key is there, everything is set properly... it gave me like two kicks and it complete die out
Ok on my video you will see that red button that has to press down. Can you confirm that? Also I had a problem where if the 2 gray plastic clips that keep the handle extended are not locked in the mower won't start. Lastly do you have the mower lifted a couple notches up? If you store it folded you have to lower the mower to the lowest setting. If your grass is tall and thick and you leave it in the lowest setting the mower will stall
You're right it somehow got edited out. But to start this and for the newer models. You push down on thr button and then pull thr metal lever back towards the handle and let go of the button and it starts right up.. Thanks for watching the video Norman
You're welcome. Thank you for watching my video. I have a second one out there for a new ryobi mower and this mower I used on this video is on there too . Thanks Norman
Hi William, There could be a number of things that could be causing this issue. Depending on the model you have. Is the handle fully pulled up and locked in place? Like on mine, there is a red sensor that will get pushed in when the handle swings up in position. Staying on red. Is the red key loose? If the key is not fully ingauged, this can prevent it from starting or stalling if it's loose. If you have a cable that runs along the handle. Make sure it's not pinched somewhere when you lock the handle in place. Have you changed out the blade? Make sure it's installed correctly and you have the right blade in there. If the blade gets caught on something, it might stall the mower. Lastly is the battery. Is the battery fully pressed and locked in place. You'll be surprised how much dust can build up in there. I always blow out the inside after I remove the battery. Do you have any other equipment or tools that use the same 40v battery? Just want to make sure it isn't a battery issue. I have yet to have a battery wear out on me. If by chance it is the battery or if you don't have another tool to check it. Take the battery to home depot and see if they could install it on one of their display models. If the same thing happens then it's the battery. If you replace the battery Make sure to get the same battery height. A lot of the new mowers now come with larger in height batteries. Like my mower in the video will not take the larger ones. I explain that in my other mower video. I hope this helps you. Thank you for watching my video. Norman
Hi Hugh, I would recommend not going less than 2" in height for both grass types. Here in idaho I keep mind lawn up to 3" because our rainy season is in the spring and with dry hot weather in the summer you need to shade your lawn. In Florida your getting rain more often and thus 2" will work for you. If these grasses are in separate areas then I might want to go 3" on the St. Augustine. I hope this helps. Thank you for subscribing.
Hi Kimberly, I'm not into mulching my lawn, but because there are those who do, then it's better for Ryobi to have that option available. The reason for mulching is that it allows the mower to recurculate the grass clipping back into your lawn and it's suppose to help with your lawn and soil. Mulching in my opinion is better when your keeping your lawn cut short. This way the grass clipping sink into your lawn better. The higher the grass clipping the more your lawn looks like your harvesting hay. Thanks for watching my video Norman
You actually answered a question that I was curious about: how does it handle thick grass? Good to know it has extra juice in the thick spots. Can you use it without a bag?
Hi Pedro, It takes me an hour to do front and back yards and I still have a charge. You should have at least 1 hour. That can lesson in cases where your mowing higher grass. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching my video. Norman
On the model from my video. There is a button right below the main handle bar. You press that down and hold it down until you pull the metal bar to the handle bar. Then let go of the button and hold the metal bar to the handle bar. If you let go of the metal bar that will shut the blades down. If it's for one of the newer models just let me know the model number and I'll help you. Thanks for watching my video.
That's because this mower doesn't have the side discharge. I have another video where I compare this mower with a newer one that does have the side discharge, and I go over how to install it. Thanks for watching my video Norman
Hi Peg, I believe that part was edited out in error. I put a new video out last week on a newer model and I do show how to turn it on which is identical to the mower in this video. Thank you for watching. Norman
Are you having problems with it starting? The one in my video is about 3 to 4 years old. Ryobi may have eliminated it. What is the model number on the one you purchased?
You're right it may have been edited out by mistake. To start the mower after you have the handle pulled up. You just push down on the gray button and then bring the thin metal bar back to the handle and release the button
