Ryobi 40 volt battery reset.

I had 2 batteries with 2 different problems. One was dead and wouldn't charge. The other was fully charged but wouldn't run any tools. This simple reset process fixed both issues. It's an easy fix, no extra power supplies or voltage regulators like I had seen in other videos. I hope this helps someone else. Just be careful. These lithium batteries can explode like a plasma cutter.
Update: One of the two batteries wouldn't charge again. I tied this same process and it didn't work. I guess they don't last forever..........

This worked like a charm. I made a warranty claim on the battery today, free replacement, then sat down with my T10 bit and opened that case up. My battery model has two small holes next to each other with RST printed nearby. I tried jumping with a flat head screwdriver with no effect. I happened to have a twist tie on my table, peeled off paper on two ends, and stuck those wire ends in the reset holes. Four green lights turn on solid, remove the twist tie jumper, push the battery test - one green light. Put it on the charger and it's happy as a clam. Now I'll have TWO 40v batteries ! BTW, my failed one was factory reconditioned. I don't think it was wrong to make the warranty claim and then fix the failed battery.

Hey Jeff -- a big thank you. My battery was flashing defective. I watched several videos -- one more complicated than the last -- then I watched yours. I was so excited to try it. My 40v battery was already opened, so I grabbed a paper clip (any wire will work) and used it to jump the 2 points you described (reset and 3v) and, in 3 seconds, my battery flashed green once. I reassembled it, then put it back in the charger and it came back to life. It is now getting a full charge. Awesome piece of information. Thank you. You just made the world a little bit better.

My battery pack had the same problem whereas it was fully charged but wouldn't run my trimmer and no lights when pressing the test switch. My pack was under warranty so Ryobi sent me a new one. I decided to try the reset on the old pack and it worked like a charm. My circuit board is different from yours but I was able to find the very small printed RST holes and jump them with a screwdriver. Thanks for the great tip.

I have the exact same circuit board on an older battery, a small 1.5 amp hour(I think) from the first model string trimmer in 40v. The motor went bad and faulted the battery. $40 for a new motor and it works great! I did the jumper reset trick and nothing flashed or blinked. But I tested the voltage and it went from 3v to 13v. Put the battery on the charger and it blinked green without showing any error. After a couple minutes I tested the voltage again (literally as I'm typing this message) and the volts went up to almost 15v! I'm going to fully charge it now and I think the battery is fixed as well! Thanks for the help :)

Thanks for the up-close video, very helpful! My Ryobi 40V 6hA stopped after only 3 uses. I got it replaced through the warranty program, but hated to just get rid of the old one without attempting to fix it. I watched several videos, but yours was the only one I came across that gave this much detail of the circuit board. For my battery, the 3.3 to Reset jump didn't work, but the GND to Reset did. It's on the charger now. Only cost to me was a trip to Harbor Freight for a set of Secure Torx to get the cover off. Size ST-10 worked.

My 40 volt battery (OP4026) says it is charging but does not charge more than 2 lights (on one battery) and 3 lights (2nd battery). Both batteries came with the 20 inch mower in 2015. When I used one of the batteries in my blower (variable speed), it would blow for 10 seconds and stop, then blow again and stop. Ryobi told me the batteries were not defective because if they were, they would have recalled them. HAH! The voltage (19V) between the + and - should be sufficient to run the blower. Once the screws are removed, how does the case separate?

Do you have to poke the wire or paper clip deep into the hole? I'm trying both reset with 3.3v and reset with GND. Both not working.
@jefflbi
@jefflbi 2 месяца назад
No, just touch the metal around the holes, and hold it there for a few seconds. But you have to make sure you're touching those points alone and not touching any other metal point. I know it's a tight area, but it can be done.
@jefflbi
@jefflbi 2 месяца назад
The ground has nothing to do with resetting. You just want to touch the 3.3v and the reset points at the same time and hold it there for like 5 seconds

I have the same circuit board. I saw one video suggesting to jumper between GND and RST so I tried it without any success. I also tried RST to 3.3V and no luck. Some videos mentioned pushing the ? button while jumpered, still no luck. I checked between the cells and got the following voltages; CLI- TO CL1+ =2.8V CL1+ TO CL2+ =2.8V CL2+ TO CL3+ =6.3V CL3+ TO CL4+ = 1.7V CL4+ TO CL5+ =2.6V CL6- TO CL6+ = 3.2V CL6+ TO CL7+ =6.3V CL7+ TO CL8+ =3.5V CL8+ TO CL9+ =3.6V CL9+ TO CL10+ =3.5V CL1- TO CL10+ =10V I don't have a power supply but tried jumpering to a good battery for a little boost with no success. Which is more concerning between the 1.7V low reading and the 6.3V high reading? Should I try drianing the high voltages with a 60W incandescent light bulb? Any suggestions?
@jefflbi
@jefflbi 2 года назад
Sorry, but I really can't advise. What you're asking is above my knowledge level. I had to watch other videos of similar but not the exact same circuit boards and I just experimented with the information I got from those videos. Could be I just got lucky, but it's better than buying new batteries when these are just fine...........
@lunacyworks
@lunacyworks 2 года назад
Seems like something is wrong there. The voltage should be 4.1 volts between those taps and Cl1-CL10=41ish volts. The board is suppose to drain the high cells such as Cl2->Cl3 down to 4.5v and charge up the Cl3-cl4 cells to 4.1+. You could use a hobby charge with a balancer to charge and rebalance the pack. I did this mine, since my charger only does 6 Cells at a time, I just connected 4 at time. Otherwise you could drain as you said the high voltage ones down then put a 40v charge across Cl1 to CL10 till the overall voltage is higher than 20v and see if the charger picks it up from there.
@Swenser
@Swenser 2 года назад
It can also be that some cells have there CID popped and the voltage reading you see is not accurate until you take cells out of circuit. If cells out of circuit are charged to above 3.6v and RST is done and still not working then controller chips/cct are no good. Option then is to use generic BMS and charge generically. MOSFETs could need replacing. Can be time consuming to replace cells but if you have the time...
@deaneverson1102
@deaneverson1102 2 года назад
@@Swenser Your knowledge seems far above mine, could you please offer some advice on the below (TIA)? I tried resetting mine, but only made it worse. Previously it was charging for around 5 minutes before the red and green started. Now it won’t charge at all, and the battery level indicator stays illuminated always unless I put the jump wire back in. I’ve got the below readings across my cells. CLI- TO CL1+ =3.6 CL1+ TO CL2+ =2.6 CL2+ TO CL3+ =3.6 CL3+ TO CL4+ = 3.5 CL4+ TO CL5+ =3.6 CL6- TO CL6+ = 3.5 CL6+ TO CL7+ =3.4 CL7+ TO CL8+ =3.6 CL8+ TO CL9+ =3.5 CL9+ TO CL10+ =3.5 CL1- TO CL10+ initially shows 19.8, then shows zero, I remove the multimeter and place back in that same location and it shows 19.8 briefly, then shows zero. Do you have any suggestions on what you think I should try next?

I would try the resetting process again. But just maybe there are some batteries that can't be brought back. They do need a certain amount of charge in them to start with. I've read that every time you plug a battery into a charger it does actually charge it for that millisecond before it tells you that it's no good. You might try plugging and unplugging multiple times, but by multiple I mean like 50 times......

Have you tried this reset procedure?? If so and it still doesn't hold a charge, the cells could just be shot/defective, in which case your only option is to purchase a new battery. There are aftermarket batteries available that are cheaper. I found some on Amazon. They last just as long as a Ryobi brand battery.
