This High-Torque is now out! homedepot.sjv.io/a1AQ4Z *Ryobi's response* "Thank you so much for sharing this data, I will send it on to our product development team to review, this is great! I hope you have a great weekend!" You have to hand it to Ryobi though. They want to know, they want feedback, they want to try things. There are several top household brands that have reached out to us because realistically there's something they want us to do for them, when we instead say no thanks we don't accept free stuff but nice to meet you, could you answer a few technical of these questions? crickets

Maybe it will be able to recharge faster without having the drawback of decreasing life at an accelerated rate. I recall reading a while ago about lithium ion batteries being able to put out more power and store more after they have 5 or 10% of their rated life in recharges. So as per their email the hp contacts allow the tool to draw 80 amps vs 60 without. Considering the PBP004 has 5s2p EVE INR18650/20P cells rated for 30A each, that would limit the pack to 60A, rendering the HP contacts useless. Also the voltage drop on the EVE cells at 15A is within a 10th of a volt of the Samsung 30T cells in the P195 at 30A. Which is why the test was so close on the short tests. At 1/2 charge the EVE at down to 3.3V and the Samsung around 3.4v and that gap increases as the state of charge drops.

@@littlejackalo5326 The batteries regulate the current, so there isn't very high peak current. These batteries would over temp within the torque dyno test length if they didn't have current regulation. In my own testing even with current regulation the newer EVE cells will over temp on around 80 seconds, with my older Sony cell 18650 pack lasting over 2 minutes. The primary cause was a much quicker voltage drop in the EVE packs, causing the current to rise as the tool tries to keep the tool turning. This is with 2p 4ah HP packs. By comparison my custom 40t 1p 21700 packs will do a complete battery drain with out overheating the cells, with a 3.5 minute run time. My 9AH Sony cell packs will also do over 3.5 minutes, but the tool overheats after about 4 minutes. I am using a test jig that mounts a bike disk caliper on my 6 1/2 inch brushless circular saw blade. Then use a spring to depress the brake leaver with the same amount of pressure.

I'm the cheap bastard that buys the cheep tool once to see if it lasts, and honestly, while they lack in power, I've only ever had one ryobi tool actually _die_ on me. Quite frankly, that would be nearly impossible to do and be fair across the different brands. The ammeter would have to be placed between the battery and the tool, and there will therefore be extra contact resistance, extra resistance in the connection from the contacts battery side to the ammeter, extra resistance in the connection from the ammeter to contacts to the tool interface - that extra resistance could drop the voltage a tad or could limit the current flow. But each tool brand being different means these extra resistances can vary too much from one to the next, making the test unfair.

With no change in chemistry/type and, therefore, any associated gains in peak discharge rate, the larger capacity battery means that there are more cells in parallel. More cells in parallel means each cell is stressed to a lesser degree; generating less heat, voltage sagging less under load, etc. Overall, the cells are happier, the BMS is happier and the tool is happier; all culminating with higher tool performance.

That much of a torque difference between the 9AH and the others would have to mean the wrench is handling a HUGE wattage (I'd think current, but I suppose it could be voltage depending on electronics) increase considering the difference in the torque is at the MFing, SOAB, hold my meth part of the curve. Maybe even 150%? If that's the case, the motor, anvil and electronics had better be way over-engineered to live a life that's anything close to the comfy life it would enjoy with the 4AH battery.

They pull the trigger, the screws come out. Just like my cheap green one. Mostly wasted money. The clutches have worked well..I did change one chuck to a jacobs. The battery life seems comparable to more expensive brands, and I appreciate that they have been compatible for decades. I have nicads from the late '90's that fit in my newest drill. TLDR; hello, I'm new these are my thoughts Ryobi is a basic brand, if you're after a basic experience your expectations will be met. If you're wanting a premium experience you will play a losing game against the house which is TTI when you pick Ryobi, you can do it but you should have just started with Milwaukee with the price you'll pay. Alrighty, so I've snooped your channels videos once or twice before tonight, but I've never binged on your content prior to tonight, so thank you very much. I'm trying to make sure to thumb up your videos and you earned a subscription but no notification bell because no one gets to send me notifications... No one. Excellent video, well done, I love your stats first approach to your videos and your commentary makes it all the more enjoyable. Now that the niceties are taken care of, my actual comment goes like this : I was really hoping that you were gonna call the Ryobi basic batteries "basic B***h" batteries quite honestly, however RU-vid's algorithm doesn't like that kind of adult flavoring generally and your channel doesn't roll that way. In my personal experience, I won't intentionally buy gen 1 Ryobi batteries, except when the Ryobi 3/8 in ratchet was $10 more with the 1.5ah gen 1 and a basic charger than the ala carte tool. But outside of that rather extreme situation I just use my xc 5.0 M18 batteries with a lovely little Badaptor adapter. Because at the end of the day, I'm invested in M18 but I didn't drink the Kool-aid, so my work van is spiced with 3 Ryobi tools where there was value in my opinion to buy the Ryobi and not the Milwaukee that was 3 times the price. All of that to say, I'm very familiar with the difference in beans between the different sizes of batteries but for what I do the basic xc 5.0 batteries that were in my kits are perfectly sufficient for my needs and I couldn't justify shelling out the dough to buy separate 21700 based batteries (except for my vape, I switched to Samsung 21700 cells about 2.5 years ago, lol).

I have had an aftermarket battery fail after a few seconds on a 1/2 impact. The cells were fitted too loosely in the plastic housing and the battery spot welds broke loose under the vibration. I got a replacement battery and filled the voids inside battery housing before using it, so that couldn't happen. I have been satisfied with it since. It brought an old tool back to life.

Project farm did some testing on tools with varying battery sizes, and broadly found 4Ah batteries to be around the ideal for most tools that aren't massive, but got greater output from even larger batteries still. The problem, however, is that these tools/batteries are clearly not designed correctly if you see increasing performance for increasing battery *capacity*. After all, the voltage is supposed to be the same.

Or buy adapters that let you use batteries you already own in tool brands new to you. They are out there. The exception being trying to use a Ryobi battery in say a DeWalt or Milwaukee tool - the part of the Ryobi battery that sticks up makes it awkward to create adapters (it’s possible but they would be bulky).

The Ryobi 6ah and 9ah both use the same cells: Murata vtc-6(15a rated). The 6 only uses 10 cells(2 rows), not 15(3rows) like the 9, but is physically larger than the other 2 row batteries because it has extra heatsinking to somewhat make up for the lower amp rated cells. No way it beats the 9.

I think with larger packs were the benefit will show vs the 21700 cells is beyond the first nut. After the 10th or 20th fastener I’d put money on the larger AH batteries maintaining voltage better and offering better performance than the 3ah 21700’s. This intuitively makes sense and actually this seems like a good reason to do battery stress tests as its own series or its own metric. 21700’s will put down those initial amps due to lower internal resistance but it really is capacity limited and voltage sag will be the enemy of any battery, but especially smaller capacity. The “High Performance” batteries, I’d put money on those being HV (high voltage cells). The higher voltage won’t impact initial performance I’m thinking because the board controller will limit voltage to what other packs are normally putting out, but its value will probably be seen a couple dozen fasteners later and even with voltage sag, it will still be at a higher voltage output for longer than normal cells. It’s like adding an extra gas tank of your truck, it won’t make it faster or more powerful it won’t affect the engine, but it will give you longer legs. So I believe different testing is needed to test these claims. The extra pins on the battery are likely, in part, what allows them to use a slightly higher voltage cells. If they limit max voltage, as any good and durable design should, if looking for consistent numbers, then you will only see benefit deeper into drawing down that batteries juice.
@michaelovitch
@michaelovitch 3 года назад
You should try to test battery amps draw and voltage drop over work periods. You can't have better results with a same battery voltage. Bigger "Ah" (amps per hour) just mean longer use,not more power. (unless you tweak it so it keeps voltage steady longer ) Knowing voltage and amperage values over work time would be nice,otherwise it seems purely commercial voodoo,and not scientific datas from Ryobi or others. Your videos are interesting.
@stevebabiak6997
@stevebabiak6997 3 года назад
Not totally true. It takes five lithium ion cells in series to get to 18V. There was another comment where the MuRata cells have a 15A maximum draw; that means a row of five series connected cells can deliver that 15A. The 6ah battery has two rows of cells, the 9ah battery has three rows of cells. So, a 6ah battery can deliver 30A maximum, and a 9ah battery can deliver 45A maximum. And that is why the 9ah battery can deliver better peak performance with a tool that can draw higher currents than the 6ah battery can deliver.

@@stevebabiak6997 So,the motor would be under exploited with smaller "ah" batteries ?
@stevebabiak6997
@stevebabiak6997 2 года назад
@@michaelovitch - yes, assuming the motor is capable of drawing more than the 30A that is the maximum output of the smaller ah battery. Not all motors will draw a higher current - for example, a typical drill won’t draw over 30A, so in that case the bigger battery doesn’t yield more peak power, it just has that longer run time.

Lithium-Caviar has to be the best type of battery chemistry. What the power tool world needs is cross brand compatibility like we see with phone chargers in the EU. Apple decided they were "too good" for the voluntary common charger standard (Micro-USB) and too valuable for EU to impose mandatory standards, fucked around and found out that the EU doesn't give a shit. So now USB-C will become the mandatory standard. I've suggested it before on this channel, but it bears repeating - you should do a video on battery adapters. Realistically the only difference between a 40-volt battery Ryobi and Dewalt is the shape/interface, making any adapter a simple mechanical adapter. Maybe the best battery for a Ryobi is from Bosch or Rigid.

Ah("capacity"[Wh is more proper way of specifying capacity]) of the battery doesn't _directly_ result in higher torque on the tool. But more Ah usually means more cells in parallel - less internal resistance - less voltage drop - more voltage udner load - more current - more torque. That 9Ah kicks ass yes, but I can make 1Ah battery that will make it go to 1000LBS then lit the tool on fire from the overload...
