Only in the last 1-2 years games that would want more than 8 threads would become more common where it would be better off limited to 30fps (stuff running on UE5 for example - you could still get 60fps average but also frequent 1% low drops into the 30s).

@@adriankoch964 The 4770K was a good CPU for sure, but it only lasted for so long because of Intel's stagnation and AMD's absence from the market. The 5800X3D is a completely different story. You only need put it into your 5 (or6) year old system and get an extreme upgrade over Zen, Zen+ or Zen2. This was never possible before. On release the 5800X3D also was literally the fastest gaming CPU at the time! Even your old 2833MHZ DDR4 was still good and only decreased performance by 1-2%. It didn't just beat the 12900K, the gaming flagship at the time, in performance, but also in efficiency and costs by a huge margin. Even today it offers the same gaming performance as a 7700X or 13600K for a lot cheaper and, in comparison to Intel, at a much lower power draw.

Exactly... A lot of parts in today's market do make quite a bit of sense but for new builders or people upgrading from very old generation parts where they upgrade to a new system almost. This is one of those, makes for a great CPU option for a gaming plus semi work focused build. 5800X3D will probably over time start showing its age with the 1% lows droping in comparison with future CPUs, kinda like how the i7-4770 has been aging over time. You can still get 60fps on Hogwards legacy with this $350 CPU from 2013, but the 1% lows will be in the 30s compared to a more modern CPU. Eventually new CPUs will just have enough extra threads and IPC brute force and improved caching strategies (so they don't need as big of a l3 cache) that the older CPU hits bottlenecks that the cache can't help out with in games that will actually need that raw power.

I know this is supposed to be an apples to apples comparison with all CPUs having 8 cores, but it's worth mentioning that the 7600 also matches or beats the 5800X3D in most games AND it only costs around $220. I just ordered the parts for my new build last night and was going to order a 7700X until I decided the extra 5 frames that I could potentially see over the 7600 just wasn't worth the $100 premium when I'm going to be gaming at 1440P. By the time it gets to the point that having 6 cores is limiting, I should be able to upgrade to a ZEN 5 CPU on the same board.

Buying a 5800X3D is a life extension strategy for AM4 owners, while getting a 7600 is an entry strategy for new builders. There will be waay faster CPUs on AM5 than the 5800X3D (or even 7800X3D) for AM5 given enough time. I wouldn't jump on AM5 either, as for sure 8000 (or later) series Ryzen will come with new boards that will improve DDR5 speeds, while an EoL system with the fastest CPU for that plattform will make for a relatively easy sell on the used market. Someone that doesn't have the need 3+ NVME SSDs with 3GB+/s read speeds in their build could also just build a used AM4 system, which can be had drit cheap (i've seen complete systems incl RAM, SSD & GPU sell for $150), slap a 5800X3D in it, sell any bits you don't need and only jump onto AM5 in a later generation, then sell the old parts again.

If you are on a gen 4 motherboard (b550/x570) then you have now allowed your 8x gpu to get full bandwidth. 8x is cut down from the standard 16x gpus. This means when paired up on gen3 systems you get a double performance hit from both gen3 speeds and half that at 8x. My garage pc is a 5600G/b550 and a GTX1080. That’s why when deals came along I upgraded all (except garage pc) to x570 so everything was gen4. As far as my nine AM4 systems all on zen3. Yes I have a problem. One for each of us in the house and a handful of media PCs and shop PC. I know I know. 2 of the media PCs and shop pc gets barely any use. Just a hobby that I have upgraded when excellent deals present themselves. For example I paid next to nothing for the b550 board , $80 for new 5600g , $80 gtx1080, $40 bdie 16gb kit. I buy almost everything except cases , power supplies and usually NVMe drives used. Still adds up though.

before I press play...5800x3d, done...now I will click like and watch the video. EDIT: so after watching the video...it's still the 5800x3d..sure there are a lot of times the 7700 comes out ahead, but seem mostly like they trade blows...plus the overhead of a whole new ram and mobo cost and the 7700 is A LOT more expensive...so if you're building a new PC that you plan on upgrading sure, the 7700 is fine, but if you already have an am4 platform...5800x3d is the clear choice....simply comparing the chip prices means nothing...we have to consider if you are upgrading or building from scratch...what's your budget...etc.. YOU CANNOT BUILD AN AM5 SYSTEM WITH THE SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY, this is flat out wrong. an am4 system with a 5800x3d will be vastly cheaper if you do a like for like system...there is no way to get around the ddr4 vs ddr5 cost..the am4 simlply cannot use it...so there is money saved/perf loss and also the motherboards for am5 are drastically more expensive...you could even get an x570 board(or possibly a B series) and run a 5800x3d...more money saved. the 5800x3d, still has a good 3 years left in it.

@@silentKeys20 ofc. Well that's kind of also an issue, the testinig is (of course) leaning towards mainstream games only. The games that benefit most from a better CPU are typically not mainstream, but typically have 2 characteristics: 1 detailed simulation or 2 just tremendously scaling numbers of entities (or a mix of both) Games like Factorio, Cities Skylines, X4 Foundations, Anno 1800 and many more have a complete different requirement on CPU and yes that's of course pretty specific game preference but it would actually help to illustrate which games benefit more from a good CPU. On the other hand some games are just coded badly and hit a limit before CPU can be utilized fully, so you'll never get perfectly accurate results anyway. Still a very good test of course and some of the games have the tendency to be CPU heavy.

Depends I agree with Brohvakiin Dova on this, I recently (Well more like the last two years) I benched my hardware and a few settings step by step. Held up my Ryzen 5000 build with the 5800X3D and it's not always a no brainer that a better graphics card will give you better performance in everything. If we look at gamesets, in simulators you can get some very surprising results. So I test ran my old System (i5-6600k @4.3 ghz, 32 GB of DDR4-3000 CL15, Asus ROG Maximus VIII Hero* several SATA SSD+HDD) with some of the new/newer components and some of the results are funny. Dirt Rally 2.0 for example doesn't give a shit about an NVME SSD, yeah it will run faster than on a SATA SSD (61 to 56 P0.1 fps), but on SATA SSD with 64GB 3600 CL18** it was even faster at 71.4 P0.1 fps. Those are the 0.1% lows, pretty much the lowest lows you ever will see. NVME SSD+3600 CL18 had 68.4 P0.1 fps. We're talking +15 fps on the 0.1 low fps by replacing the RAM. Arma 3 loved the NVME +10 fps on the 0.1% lows, nearly doubling it from 13-15.7 fps to 24.1 fps and then gained +5 fps across the board. DCS loves both the fast RAM and lots of it, the reason why I got 64GB, and the NVME drive. fps are up across the board but not too much but the increase in smoothness is ridiculous. Kingdom Come Deliverance more than doubled it's 0.1% low fps from 8.1 and multiple major stutters going through Rattay to 24.6 fps simply by installing an NVME drive (PCIe 3.0) and the average and Medians rose +12fps. The stutters got reduced to one major stutter and no minor stutters. While DDR4-3600 had neglible effect. IL-2 Great Battles didn't care much for the NVME SSD, but 64GB of DDR4-3600 gave +14 fps on the 0.1% lows. I went from 46 fps to 60 fps 0.1% lows. Bot those upgrades cost me less than a graphics card, hell less than 4060Ti and they had a very appreciable impact on my gaming experience. It's these small updates that are often overlooked and can keep a PC from reaching it's full potential. *got that as an replacement for an MSI Z170 Carbon that died, and the Hero was on sale, cheaper than the Ranger or other boards for 123-130 Euros IIRC. ** 64GB 3600 CL16 was 340 Euros instead of 225 Euros for a CL18 64GB Kit about 6 months ago.

Looking at ACC results, it's interesting to see the differences in the CPUs. Say the uninformed shopper paired a 4090 with a 7700x, they'd get less performance than someone with a X3D chip but with a lesser GPU due to the reliance on the CPU. The next gen of AC will have its own engine and won't rely on UE to power it, it'll be interesting to see how the performance between CPUs and GPUs stacks up. Would love a dedicated benchmark video on sim racing titles if you've the time Steve, it's a very niche genre of gaming without the library of benchmarks for sim racers to reference when building systems for their favourite sim racing titles.

Hi there. I love your videos. Thanks for all the great info. I am running a R5 3600 on a ROG STRIX B450-F, with a 3070 Ti and 32GB of DDR4 at 1600mhz. I am debating on a new build, or dropping in a CPU and going for a few more years. From most of my research, there's no other Zen 4 chip that's worth upgrading to (except the 5800X3D), and the 3070 is not going to hold up for much longer (I play in 1440p). New build or upgrade?
@davidandrew6855
@davidandrew6855 Год назад
I think it depends on what you want to be honest. Is it just a CPU upgrade now? You could throw in a 6950XT, if you can find one, and be set for a while with a 5800x3D. The 6950XT will net you 40% more raster performance over the 3070TI and can be found for less than $650. Paired with a 5800X3d you are probably looking at $850 to upgrade, but I would think a good 3 more years at 1440p. If just the CPU upgrade think about the 5700x and I've seen that for under $200 and it is a considerable upgrade for you, and me I'm still running a 1600 in my desktop. At 1440p, it is probably around 10% slower than the 5800X3D in a large selection of games with a 3090TI, as it is basically a 5800x. If you are keeping that 3070TI, then it would be the bottleneck, so no need to buy the more expensive 5800X3D. For me if I'm going to spend anywhere close to $1000 to upgrade, I'm seriously looking at a new build with really balanced new(ish) parts. But that 5700x at sub $200 is a very good upgrade that could most likely see you through to Zen 5. if you can tolerate that 3070TI for another 18 months.
