There's no direct translation for the word "Death", instead, sönovakijen ("silent sleep") means the same thing.
When the world was finally made, four birds were heard throughout the course of the first day. The fourth and last bird was the Owl. The Owl announced the first departure of spirit from physical shape. The Owl became the psychopomp of part of a person's spirits, leading it into the Underworld.
When there's the departure of the physical shape, a person's spirits wander to different places. One spirit goes to the Underworld, to rest, to sleep, to dream. This spirit slumbers beneath the earth to regain strength and to heal, so it can join with the other parts of the person's spirits when it's time of renewal, springing forth in the upper world in a new physical shape in which all spirits gather.
While part of a person's spirits lies in deep slumber, the other spirits go to different places and into different persons of the world, to gather knowledge and experience different lives. These spirits are part of the dream process of the spirit that is in the silent sleep beneath the earth. When all spirits gather to experience a new physical form of their own, the new person has much knowledge and is fully healed and can start anew, if the person so wishes it.
The Owl became the leader of many birds that act on its behalf in taking spirits into the underworld. It is believed that many birds are the ancestors themselves, and many others of the departed, as part of their spirits go into birds to experience the world. As such, many velnoijdà ("shamans") dress in bird costumes to establish contact with the departed, and to bring back and forth spirits and knowledge from the underworld and beyond.
