I can't imagine this not being the future of vertical lift.

FWIW: That mist you see in the cockpit views is from the air conditioning system. I presume this was filmed in Florida, where *_it can get somewhat hot and humid..._* 😊 As the air conditioning system cools that humid air, it comes out misty.

It is too bad this aircraft had an accident, they were hovering over the runway and it slapped too hard into the ground and damaged the landing gear and really tested it out. They are happy with how well it took the crash, the airframe and structure overall. This prototype will be grounded until next year,
@WranglerSlim

Sounds like every new aircraft prototype. If they haven't crashed, they haven't been fully tested yet.

I got an even better one! It's the Sikorski RAIDER, but with much slowed rotors. The RAIDER has two rotors on top that are only slightly slowed in fast flight (by only about 15%). But if you slowed the rotors by about 90%, they could actually act as plane wings (if you slowed them enough and had computer controlled blade angles). This is not possible with only one main rotor. You simply can't have a wing going backwards that makes successful lift (no way). But the RAIDER does have two main rotors, so it's possible to use them as wings. So if the RAIDER had 90% slowed rotors (with blade angle algorithms) it maybe would cruise over 300 mph instead of the lousy 250 mph (and be better on fuel as well). And still take-off land like a chopper (when the rotors are sped up). Yes, the RAIDER is impressive but it would be more impressive going 100 mph faster! And for hardly any more cost. And save money in the long run. And have more RANGE. That's what they want.

Now that Lockheed owns Sikorsky, would this now be able to go where the Cheyenne could have gone?
@WranglerSlim
@WranglerSlim 5 лет назад
The Cheyenne was built to be an attack helicopter. I'm guessing the Raider will be a Blackhawk replacement. There are attack versions of the Blackhawk though, so I'm sure the Raider could be an attack-capable helicopter too.

only thing I don't like is the possibility for the wheels to get stuck and then how are you going to land...not that I know anything about this stuff though

The helicopter should be equipped with at least one emergency system for extending the landing gear.

ducted fan with vectored thrust flaps would decrease the need for a large rear control wing resulting in faster top end speed and better slow speed stabilization.
@mocaxu
@mocaxu 7 лет назад
probably will need more parts, which will then result in higher weight.
@volvo245
@volvo245 7 лет назад
richystar2001 Yeah sure buddy I'm sure the guys at Sikorsky just forgot about ducted fans...Better call and remind them.
@atomicskull6405
@atomicskull6405 7 лет назад
Because you know more about designing helicopters than people with degrees in the subject that work for a leading aerospace company. The feathering prop has advantages over a ducted fan such as being able to be reversed for deceleration and being able to go from no thrust to maximum thrust almost instantly. In addition it can be used to recapture forward velocity and put it back into the main rotor as RPM during deceleration. No additional stabilization is needed in hover and slow flight because cyclic pitch of the main rotor provides MUCH more leverage on the airframe than a ducted fan with thrust vectoring ever could. The rear wing is common on coaxial helis, it helps stabalize the tail in fast forward flight and provides directional control during emergency auto rotation landings. Unlike a traditional helicopter coaxials loose yaw control during auto rotation because yaw comes from the torque acting on the main rotors. They increase the collective pitch on one rotor and decrease it by an equal amount on the other and the helicopter turns in the opposite direction of the rotor that has more collective pitch. However if the engine cuts out, there's no torque acting on the rotors and so no yaw control. In that case the only yaw control is from the control surfaces on the tail. And so coaxials must have tail control surfaces if only to provide directional control during auto rotation landings.

I'm sure the future updated raider will have ducted fan technology...this is a prototype to get it into production.

Raider? The new B-21 is called "Raider." Just like the population names for weapons systems are getting childish, sports like and stupid. I can understand the reason for the B-21's name. How about giving the S-97 a PROPER native American name. How about bringing back "Cheyenne."

I hope you realize the coaxial rotor design was implemented in helicopters by Sikorsky way before Kamov. The design is NOT original to the KA52. Plus it's a completely different helicopter to the KA52 designed for a different role.
