Note that at 13:16 , and 14:42 I made the mistake of not marking rallied units as 'unformed'. Rallied unit do not automatically 're-form'. Instead they are are immediately marked as 'unformed' upon being rallied in the 'command phase'.

Thanks, Steve. Planning on doing a FULL batrep with these rules next. Like in this series here, I will be showing EVERYTHING - rolls, thoughts, etc. It will be in episodes of about an hour each. Seems to be a popular format.

And another one I'm late to the game on LOL. Much as I like these rules, probably the best of the modern Napoleonic specific games out there IMO, I still prefer Black Powder, modified with all the supplements, as I find it gives a greater degree of granularity. It was hard work to get it to that state though whereas GdA will give you a good game straight out the gate. One of the things I don't like is the brigade activation which is either on/off and is the same for all brigades. In BP you still have activations but they will vary by the quality of the leader and also how complex you try to get (you can either activate the brigade with just one roll and thus only one chance to fail or you can activate by battalion with more flexibility but more chances to fail the command test). Also not keen on some of the tasks that use these ADCs for, they almost feel like an afterthought to use them for something more than just an extra command roll. Things like re-supply artillery and deploy skirmishers?? I'm now waiting to receive Bataille Empire which are by Herve Caille, the author of L'Arte de la Guerre, hoping they may tick all the boxes.

Fantastic observations. Oh, and I just got my copy of BE. There are some things I have been looking for contained in these rules - basing, variable scale of units, and tactical detail. The army lists are for the most part, really well done, and there are a lot of them. I'll be making some vids on these rules soon. ~K

Looks great, thanks for the report. I watched about 30 minutes and still have no idea how to play the game, unfortunately.

Be sure to watch all three parts. I go through about two turns covering all the basics and then some. Melee and closing to contact are the most complex part of the game. I recommend starting off with just orders, movement and shooting. Worry about the melee and advance later on. ~Fritz

Love the videos. I am thinking about buying this game, but what is the best way to base in 6mm in your opinion? Does the game feel right with a base per battalion or squadron?

@Forge_n_Brush 6 лет назад
There is formation changing with units. So, with a little adjusting, you could have say TWO stands represent a unit - battalion for infantry. You could represent all of the formations with just these TWO bases. For example: line is side by side; march column is one behind the other with a small gap between both; attack column would be as a march column except no gap, and so on. Otherwise, you may have to resort to using some type of marker to represent what formation a SINGLE stand would be in. No huge issue at all, really. Depends on what you could live with regarding this. Take note that there is no stand removal, so units won't shrink in size - visually. So, my answer would be YES... you could play with just a single - or two - bases per unit with these rules. That said, the rules are tops, JR. Well worth a try. Perhaps you will like them enough down the road to expand your unit sizes to say three or four bases - like I did in the video. Works great. Anyway, thanks for the comment. Hope that helps. :) ~K

To my mind the fact there is no casualty figure removal is major downside to the rules. Just go one step further and you might as well be using tokens or card counters instead of models.

"thinking of buying this game" ? You only have to buy the rules; everything else you need to make. That's the whole point of figure wargaming!

Love your napoleonic battle reports! Any chance for General de Brigade maybe? I would like to see these rules in action, as there is no reliable and detailed battle report on RU-vid...

I agree about GdB. Honestly, GdB is one of my all time favorite sets of rules. I have been planning on a BatRep/review, etc. for them for some time now. It all comes down to having the time to do it. That said, I can say that I WILL be doing some GdB here on the channel. Thanks for the feedback, Kondotier. ~K

One more idea, which may be useful for You, especialy for solo games. In our club, for almost all our games and periods, we use a rule called "assessment of the situation". It's dice roll of 3d6, each one in different colour. 1st dice is Visibility, 2nd- Command and 3rd- Optimism. Results of 1 and 2 are poor, 3-4 average and 5-6 are good. For example, if you have a cavalry unit, which defeated its enemy with some loses, but there are more enemy units in sight, you can roll 3d6 and check: if they have good command and visibility, but poor optimism, they will probably fall back to their lines. If they have good optimism, with average command and visibility, they could charge the nearest enemy, etc. It is very useful, especialy for units that have fulfilled their initial orders. Thes rule also creates very interesting situations on the battlefield and it is sometimes very suprising for players, as they don't have full control over each unit. There are no rigid rules regarding what to do on what roll, just common sense, but I think it adds much flavor to the games :)

Excellent idea. I will have to try that out on the table. It is kind of like what I do now, although I only make a single roll. Great idea. ~K

How do you compare this game with Black Powder?
@Forge_n_Brush
@Forge_n_Brush 6 лет назад
Hi, Alejandro. As a fan of Napoleonic history, not just 'gaming', I think Gd'A does a better job at explaining just what is happening in a battle on the tabletop. unfortunately, I feel BP leaves me with more questions than answers. Gd'A is a bit more detailed - I like that - and has mechanics that make sense to me. Those details are where they should be - command and control, melee and the approach to melee. Cavalry stands out as a deadly force to be feared, and so on. If anything, Gd'A - and its predecessor, General de Brigade - feels right - more so than the much more 'generic' BP. Not to put BP down, but if you like more color and detail for the Napoleonic Wars, Gd'A does a better job. Hope that gives you some insight. Thanks for comment, and take care. :) ~K

Black Powder is simpler, some might say, even, simplistic. On the positive side that makes it easier to learn, on the negative - it fails to capture the spirit of the age and provides a game that is less satisfying to more experienced gamers and historians.

@@sirrathersplendid4825 true though another plus for BP is more widespread playerbase probably + due to it being more vanilla you can easily expand in other era's before or after the Napoleonic Wars. So it's main strength (good for different theatres/periods) is also it's weakness. (less period specific chrome)

Another difference is that you need supplements and your own time to construct unit rules for Nappy in BP while everything is already defined in GdA. I have played both and recommend GdA for much deeper period flavour.
