Parts of Hwy 84 are still closed on the Peninsula so drivers have been taking other routes, including Kings Mountain Road which is popular with cyclists. Len Ramirez reports. (7-13-23)
Contrary to what the CHP officer said, there is no CA vehicle code that says cyclists must ride single file. There is a code that states when a lane is wide enough for a car to safely pass a cyclist, that cyclist must ride as close to the edge as possible. However this obviously only applies when other vehicles are present and it doesn’t apply when it is unsafe to ride on the edge of the lane due to debris, detritus, etc. Cars also must give 3-feet of space when passing unless they are traveling at very slow speeds.
I'm a cyclist myself but you couldn't pay me to do this ride! Along with Niles canyon! Lost a friend few years back on his bike! That was enough for me! Now i ride nice paved trails and love the rides! I wonder how enjoyable these rides can really be competing with cars? The car always wins!
They need to put in numerous bike turnouts, like they've been doing on Mt. Diablo. Also, as a driver, whenever I used to drive King's Mountain or La Honda Road, I had close calls from oncoming traffic passing cyclists on blind curves and nearly hitting me head-on. Rather than take Kings Mtn. or La Honda, cyclists should try Old La Honda Road instead, as few cars use it.
That road with no shoulder was never intended for bicycles, let alone the increasing number of cyclists and vehicles who use it now. There will always be frustrated drivers unwilling to drive 10mph behind a cyclist, so crashes will continue to happen. I think Page Mill Rd is even worse as it's steeper, so cyclists ride even slower.
I am a avid cyclist and it's really dangerous and frustrating when a biker or group riders hold up traffic taking up full lanes. we all need to respect each other. I say 50-50% fault and bikers are getting worse by the years
Roadway CVC 21202 When bicyclists are traveling slower than the normal speed of traffic, they must ride as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the road except: a. When overtaking and passing another bicycle or vehicle going in the same direction; b. When preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway c. When necessary to avoid hazards such as objects, vehicles, surface hazards, or substandard width lanes that make it unsafe to continue along the right-hand curb or edge d. When approaching a place where a right turn is authorized. e. When the road carries traffic in one direction and has two or more marked traffic lanes, the bicyclists may ride as near to the left-hand curb or edge of the roadway as practicable. Bicyclists traveling at the speed of traffic may ride within the travel lane.
@@millofenzi6895 right so none of that specifically says that riders cannot ride two abreast. The law treats cyclists as slow cars, meaning that yes we need to pull over to allow faster traffic to pass when 5 or more cars are behind us. It’s a different situation. Given that drivers get so impatient trying to pass riders, I’ve had multiple instances where I was in the middle of passing another rider when it was initially safe to do so, then had a driver come up and yell at me for “not riding single file.” First of all, it’s not up to ordinary citizens like that to enforce the law on me, second of all, they clearly don’t know the law, and third, they didn’t see what was happening just prior and have no idea what is really going on due to their compressed time window.
In a year long project the Woodside Circulation Committee reached out to residents, cycling groups and Nextdoor Woodside to collect over 75 inputs from cyclists concerning the greatest safety risks in Woodside. That community of 75 cyclists identified Kings Mountain Road as the highest safety risk in Woodside., The Committee asked motorists, equestrians and pedestrians the same question. All inputs were combined, rank ordered and the output used to make Circulation Safety Improvement recommendations that balance the needs of all users of the public roads.
@@millofenzi6895 So that MIGHT make it the county's (not COUNTRY, i.e. USA, as the title to the video suggests) most dangerous road - but a survey of only 75 in a county the size of San Mateo is hardly scientific.
@@jefforum My intent was to explain the Town of Woodside's process to identify circulation safety issues and Kings as a high risk. Editing cut out my long-winded explanation of the process Woodside used to identify Kings as a top cyclist safety issue. Just wanted to clarify for you. No intent on my part to suggest that Woodside's assessment represents the entire San Mateo County.
Every time any of us get out on a public road our safety depends on all users following the California Vehicle Code ("CVC" ) as it defines the expected behaviors for all these different strangers sharing that public space. Both motorists and cyclists are obligated to follow the CVC.
The suitability/safety of a road's car/bike interaction is a function of the road and of the behavior of the motorists and cyclists. When both behave like reasonable people everything is fine. Kings would be safer is cyclists and cars followed the posted speed limits and both adopt common courtesy of the road behaviors. Cyclists pull over when safe to do so and let motorists pass. Motorists, realize that cyclists have the right to "take the lane" if they feel it is unsafe for you to pass them because of narrow roads, poor sight lines etc. (See CVC21202 below) Wait until it is safe to pass. Clips embedded in the video show cars behaving badly. Another segment could be made documenting bikes behaving badly. Stop behaving badly! Slow down, smile and wave a "thank you" to each other
The geological challenges (see current road closures/narrowing on Hwy 84, Kings Mtn, Old La Honda, West OLh etc) make that suggestion cost prohibitive to implement. Also complicated as Kings crosses two jurisdictions: Woodside is responsible for the road up to the Huddart Park entrance, from the park entrance up to Skyline Blvd is is a San Mateo County Road.
