@@david1044 As I understand it, Leslie was always the loudest guitarist on stage in these kinds of situations. I think that's what he's referring. I think Leslie's phrasing, and his playing Felix's tunes, is inspiring, though he had limitations that are easy for some to focus on. It seems like people who took lessons with him found it changed their playing and their approach to building solos (it seems that was his focus, unsurprisingly)
@@david1044 MAY BE IN THE SAME LEAGUE OR BALL PARK BUT HE CERTAINLY DID NOT ECLIPSE OR OVERSHADOW ALVIN -- NOT HAPPENING -- WEST WAS EXCEPTIONAL INDEED BUT CMON MAN
@@david1044David, I completely agree.... Alvin Lee is one of the GOATs. No one else could make that Gibson sing like him !! Shame on the R & R HofF for not inducting TYA and Alvin Lee. For their performance at Woodstock alone as generational changing. I'm Goin' Home (by Helicopter).
Alvin Lee...what a piece of work. If he didn't get you moving and grinning there was something wrong with you. I learned to appreciate Leslie West most in the last ten years as both a rocker and a bluesman.
I just found this out from you. I didn't see it in the news. I was lucky enough to see him in 73 with Bruce and Lang. Now nothing but far distant memories. I was also crushed when Mr. Lee passed away too
How have I not seen this video before????? Leslie and Alvin. Bloody hell!!!! Two of the greatest. Now I need to did for the whole concert. Both these guys did not get the love they deserve. Thank you both.
Leslie's had his guitar hooked up to an old simple style of effect and it always sounded so powerful. He could play one note and it sounded like a freight train just rolled in. He said once he liked playing leads you could remember them and basically hum every note. Just loved his sound. And of course Lee will always be one of the most underrated rock and blues guitarist ever. When the greats are mentioned, you can't leave him out or your list is incomplete. Can't believe these guys are gone.
wow!!!!! im blown away 2 of my biggest heroes together , alvin lee and leslie west.....its ashame it took leslies death to dig deeper and find this gem.....R.I.P. all of you legends that have brought me so much great joy over 50yrs.........
I always enjoyed Alvin Lee's vocals & guitar. Lee really shines as vocalist in this live show. What a true rock voice. Up there with Presley, Jim Morrison, John Lennon & yeah, even Jerry Lee Lewis. Many of his tracks were fiery. Leslie West is always incredible. Steve Hunter & the others all monsters of guitar. I also admired the reason Alvin called his band Ten Years After. He said the band formed 10 years after Elvis Presley. Appropriate. RIP Spirit's Randy California also.
Steve Hunter, Steve Howe of Yes, two of my favorites. Hunter, along with Dick Wagner, provide the greatest dual lead guitars I've ever heard on the Intro to Sweet Jane, on Lou Reed Rock and Roll Animal, and, starting with Billion Dollar Babies, joined Alice Cooper along with Wagner.
The guitar solos on the non acoustic version of 'Heroin' on 'Rock and Roll Animal' live is some of my favorite guitar work ever. I still love the acoustic version by The Velvet Underground but this live version makes me so happy.
Oh man!! This is golden... WOW! I grew up with all these guys and the music nowadays just doesn't compare.... I was so freekin lucky to grow up in the 70,s..... Ive played guitar for 50 years and my playing was influenced by all these guys... God bless you all... someday I’ll be able to play music with all of them...Yeehaww!!!
It sure was great growing up with such awesome music. I had the mountain live album, what a album. These kids today don't know what real music is, sad.
What a treat to see Leslie West, great player with a kick ass style, almost like he's playing with a slide. I like how he moves about the stage so easily like he would in his own living room. The one guitarist up there that I think about all the time is (who else?) Alvin Lee. R I P mate!
When Alvin died it broke my heart. He brought so much joy into this world. It's like the lights went out. I still play your music Alvin. Although we only spoke a couple of times, I want to thank for teaching me how to play rock and roll.
Amazing you could put Steve Howe on an acoustic in the background and not even care. What a lineup. RIP Alvin and Randy. Steve Hunter just up there getting it done like always.
Yes, it's interesting how Steve could have ended up as "the acoustic rhythm guitar guy". I'm wondering if he volunteered for some sort of "Steve Howe reason". Howe can certainly play and write rock and roll tunes, but maybe he thought his lead style would stand out too much / not fit in or something.
@@ElrondHubbard_1Howe playing rhythm on an acoustic no less 🤣👌 Steve Howe can toe 2 toe any of these guys .. shame seems maybe a class move for whatever reason on his part ?
Thank you for uploading this gem. Very seldom will you see such a compilition of masters of guitar on stage today. I am sad to say that "gone are the days of the knights", although their legacy is eternal.
It was from a tour called night of the guitars...not looked but I'm guessing there'll be clips on YT, they all did their own set and then jammed at the end. It was so good because at the time there was all the up and coming shredders and it was good to remember these guys could absolutely kill it.
I remember when I bought this album back in the day. Miles Copeland, IRS boss had this label within IRS called something like no words for instrumental music hw is Stewart Copeland's brother, in fact he helped his brother's band The Police when they were starting and He, Miles is the man behind this live album "NIght of the Guitar" and tours. Truly a musical legend Mr. Copeland.
This is too cool!!! Leslie, Alvin, Steve H. and the rest, true heavy hitters of rock & roll! This video should be cherished as it can never happen again. ♥️
Nothing better than a bunch of the Greatest get together on one stage.nothing but Love on their faces for what they Love the most. Rock n Roll.Every time I watch Woodstock the movie.and I had never seen or heard of Alvin Lee.when he comes on that stage at night and does I'm Coming Home I get chills on my arms and legs.incredible then he grabs that watermelon and walks off.tanks for the video I love it.
just simply the best , Alvin may not be in a class by himself but it only takes a moment to call roll, Captan Speedfingers ,fastest Guitar in the West, the Guitar that stole Woodstock....
You can say that AGAIN. Nobody could "smoke" a Gibson like that!! He is one of the GOATS in the Guitar world. R.I.P. Alvin and Leslie West. Amazingly, Alvin Lee passed away about 6 months after this concert. It was never revealed of what other than some operation that was performed in Spain where he lived. "I'm Going Home.....by Helicopter"... That was WOODSTOCK. TYA never got the acclaim as agreat Blues /Rock band with Captain Speed Fingers.
Alvin Lee Ten Years After Undead, 1967. Listened to that album everyday for two years until I graduated and moved. Still stands up; classic Look it up. He was killing it; basically invented shred. Nobody could touch him.
Went to a Mountain concert at University of Colorado Mackie Auditorium way back in the early 70's - Leslie West almost blew the doors and windows out. Went to a Ten Years After concert at the Golden Bear across from Huntington Beach pier in the early 70's and it was the same deal -- Alivin Lee almost exploded the boards off that place. And Randy California with Spirit concerts back in the day were mindblowing.
Back in 1974 I was playing lead guitar in a band called Medusa, we had a review in Melody Maker and the reviewer said we were like Sabbath with Leslie West on guitar. I'll take that any day of the week even now.
I don't know why for the past few weeks, I keep getting links to Leslie West performances.. I was never a fan of this guy.. But since watching lots.. I am Now!!
I am kind of speechless . . . so many of my favorites taking up the same space. I never imagined you could have too much talent on stage but this is pretty close. Awesome, thanks for posting. The only thing better would have been an electric axe in Mr Howes' hands.
After following REO speedwagon to a small bar after a show in Grand Rapids Michigan, they played this song for my birthday request. We walked into the bar a couple minutes behind the band and I sat down next to Gary Richrath. I immediately struck up a conversation. Nobody in the bar had a CLUE who they were, so we were uninterpreted. I mentioned it was my birthday and that I was at the show (asking him to autograph my ticket stub). Kevin Cronin was talking to the house band about giving up the stage and their instruments to play a couple songs for the patrons, so Gary asked if I had a birthday request. Without thinking 'Little Queen' came out. Gary just laughed saying "not with those instruments". Every band knows Johnny B. Goode, so that was my next request. Gary just smiled and said "we can do that". This was in the late 70's, about the time the 'Tuna Fish' LP was released. BEST BIRTHDAY of my life, and this song always reminds me of that night.
