S Jaishankar In US: Speaking at Columbia University in New York, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that for almost 50 years, India regarded the US with suspicion, struggled during the 2008 nuclear deal and that it has taken a lot of effort to overcome earlier assumptions and forge the mutual relationship as it stands today.

I find Prof. Panagariya’s support for authoritarian rule rather discomforting, sitting as he is in a democracy and enjoying the benefits of freedom. He discounts the role which rickety property rights, the trademark of authoritarian systems, have on economic growth in the medium-term. A democratic system gives the ordinary person the confidence of solid property rights, which underpins all sustained productive exertions. Prof. Panagariya seems to premise the utility of democratic rule in terms of economic growth which is rather besides the point. In a way, like Dr. Jaishankar says, democracy is being used as a scapegoat for atrocious governance and policy choices. And he is also wrong when he posits the economic success of a democracy on the quality of leadership at the top. India is a socialist state, with an overbearing state suppressing individual economic freedom, and that is where the problem lies. The Indian people, when left free to their own devices, free from government interference, are among the most economically productive people in the world with some of the best output records, as shown by the performance of the Indian diaspora, of which Prof. Panagariya himself is part. Why is he forgetting all this?

The monopoly permanent membership of UN security council and veto power must be removed. Instead of trying to get the status of permanent member of UN security council , india should try to remove this clause of security council and end the veto power of all the nations.

US is honoring an old contract to SELL (not gift) spare parts for F16 to Pakistan. Probably a reward for help in getting Zawahiri. India buys arms and oil from Russia, US sells arms to Pakistan. US expressed concerns about what India did but could not stop India and the reverse is equally true. Becoming an ally Vs staying independent are two distinct policy choices. India has chosen to remain independent and will experience positive and negative consequences of that choice.
