Музыканты такие живые, молодые и красивые. Низкий поклон талантливому дирижеру Платонову, замечательной работе операторов. Спасибо за прекрасные удивительные комментарии. Какое счастье, что когда-то давным-давно я закончила музыкальную школу. Музыка не стала моей профессией, но я научилась ее слушать и слышать, и она стала Большой Любовью моей жизни. Всем мира и добра.

This is the most intense performance of Rachmaninoff's 1st Symphony I have heard. Breathtaking. Brilliant.

One year on: still not a better live performance than this. Terrific in every way

It has taken me a lifetime to hear this brilliant work. Now I know the history is it too late to be angry that SVR suffered so much at the hands of a drunken conductor and an unsympathetic critic? SVR was 40 years younger than I am now when he composed it and I WOULD NOT HAVE A CLUE WHERE TO BEGIN writing anything as moving. May he rest in peace and rise in glory? Peace be upon him and all who appreciate him

Closing one's eyes, you'd never think this was an orchestra of younger musicians. Their performance is that of a seasoned, most capable orchestra .

I do not play a single musical instrument and my knowledge about orchestras is -10...I only enjoy listening to orchestras while studying, but I can tell, this Maestro is more than a genius and the each person in this band is more than talented...I wish I was a millionaire and I would pay for them to play only for me ... Awesome amazing phenomenal concert.... Respect

Another visit, and STILL...Marvelous in ALL ways. The 1st movement, incredibly muscular, yet never lacking the melodic, rhythmic and and dynamic subtleties of the Master. Remarkable sound considering the tight venue. Entertaining video presentation...but most off all, perhaps the best video version of this highly underrated symphonic masterpiece. Beautifully propulsive, but never rushed. Lovely close to the 2nd movement. The 3rd movement showcases several of the musicians, and all stepped up beautifully. This movement can be at times difficult to "hold together", due to the almost ad-lib nature of the tempo changes, rubato, etc. The dynamics are varied and in this case beautifully judged, There is no lack of the almost "spooky element" Rachmaninoff injects, similar to his "Isle of the Dead." Towards the end of the movement, lovely contributions from the Concertmaster and several others.Marvelously conducted and performed. Bravo!!

Robert Simpson, the great 20th century English composer stated in a book he edited titled "The Symphony": "If a symphony of Rachmaninoff is to be remembered, then it should be No.1" Though No. 2 is more mature and is the more popular, one cannot dismiss the overwhelming power of number 1.

Quite simply, AMAZING!. Rachminoff at it's highest level. Dedicated, focused, musical playing by every member of this tremendously gifted collection of musicians. Platonov's interpretation of this symphony is among the best I've ever heard, maybe 30 in my long life, as "Previn-ish" as anyone could ever want...a tribute to Maestro Platonov. IMO, he made this symphony as important, vital, and touching as the more famous and loved 2nd Symphony. Just a little note that, for me that "rush" to the Chinese gong was just plain thrilling. You KNOW it's coming, but Platonov was RELENTLESS, and his musicians responded with great gusto. Wonderful, as was every second of this performance. Special mention for the intonation of the horns, always spot on, the duo flutes in perfect sync, spectacular percussion, and beautiful string tone. Actually, every section of this orchestra was ON from the first downbeat. Though somewhat re-written by the composer years after the original performance, one hopes the so-called "critic" of the PREMIER, César Qui is rotting in Hades. That said, the subsequent breakdown and restoration of Rachmaninoff by Dr Dahl (paraphrasing)"You will write a GREAT Concerto" may allow me SOMEDAY to forgive the critic. It was refreshing to hear a DRY venue, which gave this performance a feeling of being there. The mic-ing is intimate, and almost seems inside the orchestra. If you attend a concert, generally the sound is more mono than the artificially wide stereo heard on CDs and live performances. For me, this gave the performance even more impact. Kudos to the engineers. I would obviously be a fool if I didn't mention that this as a spectacularly good looking bunch of musicians.Yes, easy on the eyes, for sure. However, this is an IMPORTANT performance MUSICALLY, especially for those who have not given the NO1 much of a listen. Listen to THIS one! Bravo!!!!!

Awe-inspiring music, wonderful performance. There is nothing in the whole symphonic repertoire that combines power and pathos, tenderness and tragedy in such an organic way. The final movement - OMG! A headlong rush towards a catastrophe, followed by the emergence of some overwhelming power. The transition to the major key at the conclusion gives us some reason for optimism in a dark world. One might be excused for thinking that Rach had a premonition about the cataclysm of war and revolution that was soon to engulf the world, and his own country, in particular.

Superb camera work. I've never seen an orchestra concert with such outstanding camera work! The clarinets showing just the hands. Then an extraordinary non-jerked pan. And then an occasional wide shot.

Still the best reading and recording of this fiery Rach 1 on the internet or lp, tape, or cd mediums. I would love to hear Platonov & the Perm musicians perform this symphony with Ormandy's glockenspiel addition in the first movement -- ah . . .to hear real Russian artists glorify the Russian Orthodox quotation so regally. There is more to this Gypsy flavored, heraldic symphony than Rach scholars are telling us!

Absolutely brilliant rendition of my favourite (along with Mahler's Sixth) symphony. All human life is in this piece and, to my mind, this is an excellent interpretation by an orchestra that looks as though it is actually feeling the music as well as playing it.

Wow what a treasure I just came with. This is a magnificient performance of a somehow underrated yet absolutely wonderful masterpiece. Superb, very intensely expressive. Bravo.

This has always been an underappreciated work. It is moving and beautiful. This is a lovely rendition. I suspect it will become the standard that other orchestras try to meet.

Enjoying this performance so much. Glad to see a number of the musicians are enjoying it too (i.e. the principal flautist)

It's taken far too long but at last the genius of Rachmaninov is being recognized and he can rightly take his place among the greatest of composers. For an early work this symphony is amazing, full of energy and drama and very individual. "Isle of the Dead" and the "Symphonic Dances" both remain for me two of the finest musical compositions of all time.

My intoduction to Rachmaninov many decades ago. Powerful stuff.

Great symphony and inspired performance - moments of haunting beauty, energy and exuberance. Tchaikovsky admired Rachmaninov's early work but died suddenly and so was unable to fulfill his promise to conduct his compositions.

Dear Lord Almighty, what an ULTRA FINE PERFORMANCE of an ULTRA FINE SYMPHONY by an ULTRA ULTRA FINE COMPOSER!!! WOW! What a bunch of outstanding young(er!) musicians whose hearts were really really "into" the music!!! That fine oboe player looked like he could have been an "Olympic weight lifter", & yet he beautifully played such a "delicate" instrument!! Russians playing Rachmaninov- what could be finer!!! "Ach du lieber, mein schatz"!!!!!

I wonder how much inspiration Shostakovich took from this powerful tour de force? I have heard this symphony from a number of recordings, but none of them hove the sheer impact of this performance!

Thank you, Valeriy, for posting such a good, live performance of the 1st symphony. Sound quality was admirable for a live theatre concert. This increasingly rehabilitated piece cries out for empathy and accuracy and got just that, and to think that Rachmaninov composed this wonderful (if ill-fated) work when only 23, around the same age as many of these players.

Читать критиков, сопереживать одному из любимых композиторов за провал - это одно, и другое дело, после прослушивания понять, что провал был закономерным, наверное если бы ее приняли, не родился бы подлинный Рахманинов, с его ярчайшим мелодизмом и масштабным драматургическим мышлением. В этой симфонии нету ярких тем, которые запоминанются и которые хочется напеть, много перекличек среди разных групп оркестровых инструментов, обрывки мелодий, невнятные секвенции, такое ощущение что это набор упражнений для начинающего композитора, которые каким то образом соединились воедино. Спасибо дирижеру за такую возможность познакомиться с редко исполняемым произведением!

Back again - I have still not heard a better performance of this under-rated symphony. Glazunov was reportedly drunk when he conducted the first performance. Perhaps Rachmaninov forgave him as there are some lovely phrases from the saxophone in Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances - perhaps a fond gesture towards Glazunov's very good saxophone concerto

I watched a video of Nikolai Lugansky soloing in the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto #1 and then decided to make an evening of it by viewing Rachmaninoff's Symphony #1. I keep returning to this performance. Thanks for posting and all the best to the ensemble of that time!

I really love the 2nd movement. It sounds as sultry as some of Rachmaninov's _much_ later works, such as the 4th Piano Concerto, the 3rd Symphony and the Symphonic Dances.

I must have heard 80% of the available recordings and most of the live concerts recorded here on RU-vid. This gets my vote for the best. Everyone else seems to miss one vital element or another, whether the details are slurred over in the excitement at a tempo which is just a little too fast (Ashkenazy and Svetlanov, his first one on Melodyia/Angel) or by someone who adores the details, brings them out successfully, but loses the excitement of the whole (Litton and others.) Ormandy, Previn, and others seem content to stand outside of the music and present a generalized, somewhat passionless, charcoal sketch of this sprawling, colorful epic. Dutoit and Maazel come maddeningly close to capturing the work but contain serious blemishes - especially in the finale. Jansons, Kogan, and Petrenko are all good but linger behind the best of the best. (Usually, it's just one or two aspects of the score that just don't work - as if the conductor can't quite get this head around the whole score. They and even Pawel Przytocki with an average but well-drilled Polish Orchestra will do if you aren't a perfectionist.) But THIS is the one. This is the keeper. Somebody needs to ship these fine young players and their conductor to a better hall and record them in this work for posterity.
