I think the classic 19 is cooler. Call me old school but I love the traditional blue and wood grips.

The comp carry 19 has a matte black paint with rosewood grips but this guy likes the classic traditional blue paint with the traditional walnut grips

One advantage not often mentioned of most 3" & 4" barreled revolvers over the 2" and 2.5" barreled models is full length ejector rods.
@1957robertjohnson
@1957robertjohnson 5 лет назад
dodsonarmsco people mention it. What they don’t mention is with the short ejector rod found on the 2 1/2 guns, it is impossible for empty shells to slip under the extractor as they can with the full length ejector rod. When that happens, you better have a BUG. Because that’s a hard jam to clear.

Excellent comparison video. thank you! Even though the Carry Comp is listed as a 3 inch barrel, it is actually just a 2.5 inch barrel as far as rifling goes. So any defense round you choose, will have the ballistics of a 2.5" barrel, which we all know is significantly different than a 4 inch barrel.

It's not just the blueing that makes the older models more desirable. The lack of that ridiculous Hillary hole/internal lock and much, much slicker feeling action while cycling makes them 10X better.

I think a long overdue comparison video would be comparing the S&W Model 19 Carry Comp against the Colt Cobra .357

any issues with specific ammo? I just purchase one and it shot Remington 38 125 GR and Fiocchi 38 158 GR without issues, but when I tried to shoot Armscor 38 158 GR range ammo, one out 3 would not fire. The Range guy said that ammo has really hard primers. Next issue, when I shot Buffalo Bore 140 grain 357 magnum, they fire all the time, but the casing gets so hot, it won't let the cylinder cycle to the next round and I can't even open or remove the shell, until it cools off, then I have to pry it out. I did shoot Magtech 357 magnum 125 GR with no issues. I ordered Underwood 120 GR and 180 GR loads along with Hornady 125 GR XTP, will try shooting those to see if I get any more issues and if so, I will send it to S&W so they can correct it. They say since these PC revolvers have fine tuned triggers, they can get ammo sensitive, but I don't want an unreliable revolver. Read more

I love my 4" model 19-3. And yes, the finish is amazing. I love the 3" 686+ too. It’s a great carry gun. 7 rounds of .357 are a handful of awesome.

Good stuff James. The "Classic" series of Smiths should 100% be without the internal lock. The 442 and 642 are produced in no-lock versions, and while I have 2 "locked" Smiths (from which I have removed the lock), it takes away from the classic look of the Classic line of pistols (just like it does with all their revolvers).

In a self defense situation no one is going to be doing any trigger staging so I wish they would’ve done some more realistic testing to see how the recoil would be doing double taps and not staging the effing triggers. Stupid waste of time. Im looking for a self defense revolver.

Did not know about the old blueing process, the 19 was my very first gun-shop purchase in 1976. $176. Wore it out. I have intended to send it in to have it refurbished but? The world is full of good intentions. 🙈

Do u know what makes the old ones better ? The finish , no Hillary Hole 🔐 not being drilled holes completely thru the top strap ruining the finish on the cylinder, no MIM parts , no sleeved barrel and way better sights and action way way smoother on the older ones ! These new ones are a joke especially for the money there asking , if it was a 400.00 dollar pistol it would be ok I guess 🤷‍♂️

The 19 Carry Comp looks very much like the 586 L Comp. L Comps are 7 shooters. I'm still a newbie shooter and my accuracy is so much better with it than say with my Glock. It's a fantastic revolver. I'm not sure if it's because it's out of their performance center category, but I'm incredibly impressed with it.

I have one of the old Model 19s with the original 4 inch barrel, pinned and recessed, plus the target hammer and trigger. I plan to keep that one. Shoots like they all did, very well. Still I carry my semi-auto's, usually Glock, for defense. Still love these revolver videos. Good to see Yeager bend just a little bit. There are a lot of us older guys who started off on revolvers back before there were a lot of good lighter carry semi-autos.

Question...you had a misfire and pulled the trigger again. I’ve seen that a lot on You Tube. It’s an advantage of a revolver, doesn’t fire, go to the next round. What if it’s a hang fire and all you did was move a round that could go off to a different location?

I have noticed the grips on my new production Model 29 are thinner than the older guns from 20+ years ago. Thinner grips are noticeably more painful than the thicker ones. Is it the same with the 19s?

Altamont is the OEM source for S&W's wood stocks, as well as a bunch of other gun companies. Nearly all of their revolver stocks are way too thin.

When I was a young-n’ a hundreds YEARS ago I used to do specific hand and arm exercises to build grip and arm strength. It seriously helped control recoil plus recovery times. Grips are a to me experimental process. I really loved Pachmayr Rubber grips, BUT! CCW wise... the stock grip rubbed my side raw, it hurt in the heat of summer high tempts. But, I am speaking only from 1970’s experience. High ride pancake style holster. I’m sorry-tee shirt helped. But being so clingy I felt they added additional layer to my off-duty clothing at the time.
