Love every second... 1970's-early 80's: Had some cousins living in Hastings. Every time we visited from Rice Lake, WI, they'd ask us: "What's the best thing to come out of Wisconsin? An empty bus!" Two cousins worked the M.O.W. of the Milwaukee Road, a third older cousin was a fireman for the Milwaukee... then, ironically he got a job on the Hastings Fire Department and retired 30 years later. The video seemed like only a few minutes. Glycol... Ever seen the ingredients of Fanta soft drinks? Fanta is a brand usually found in slushie machines... Polyethylene Glycol, also now known as PEG. Also loved those beauties, er, the line of MNS hoppers also in the background! Neat to see MNS SD39 #40 get renumbered to 6240. John
John, I’ll have to share your cousins joke about WI, with those I know from WI. Those cousins sure seemed to put together a nice career. Glycol is in all kinds of stuff…in fact, it was hard to find thing it was NOT in or used yo create. With so many complex molecules containing it as a base. It’s so great to hear the time flies, when 20 minutes can go by, just like that. 💨 Thank you for taking the time to tune in and post. Just two episodes remain for Season 7.
It’s great to hear from those that enjoy the comedy mixed in. This series isn’t intended to be nuts and bolt, rivet for rivet cold hard facts. Hopefully you enjoy next weeks episode! Just two to go for Season 7!
Can’t go wrong with know where the footage is shot from, right? I’ve always watched videos and wished I knew…making that an obvious must to incorporate in these videos. Thanks for tuning in & sharing your feedback.
@cbqzephyr It’s great to have modelers like yourself Dave, that are willing to share their railroads, with others, to operate. You’re a class act & genuinely guy. Thanks again for having us out to your place. Now let’s get that PT talking with those locos. 😎
William, another great episode. So many little pieces of comedic gold tucked in there 🤣 I like all 5 kinds of covered hoppers. Big ones, little ones, clean ones, dirty ones and rusty ones but not derailed ones, lets not have one of those kind of comments. Cheers Rob
Great Video .was that a 386 CPRAIL cylindrical hopper? They were used in my area for loading a very fine sand used in polish and toothpastes. A lake freighter would drop off the sand at Indusmin in Midland Ontario and refine the sand further. CPRAIL would then move the hoppers to Medonte where a passing southbound freight off the McTier sub would take the string away.
Another fantastic episode! I saw that yellow beacon on the MN&S locomotive before you mentioned it and I am glad you explained it. Bob's prototype footage is always amazing to watch. It looks like you had a great time at the ops sessions. You are right, it is the people that make the hobby enjoyable. That windmill train on the club layout was great to see. That is one good thing about belonging to a club, it gives you the chance to run some trains that normally don't work on a smaller home layout. The Curmudgeon and I are the same when it comes to knowing the differences between covered hopper cars, I don't have a clue! All I want to know is the car number and where is it going during an ops session. Nice to see your layout again even in its current state of controlled chaos. It is good that you showed everything is not perfect all the time. Already looking forward to the next episode.-Tom
Spot on Tom! You nailed it to a “T”. They’re just trains & models…without the people that bring them to life. The time spent running ops is worth it. Much like your experience with the guys from Germany, you all spoke trains! 👍
Thanks Tim! It’s 86° and sunny…on the patio, after a solid 18 holes of mini-golf…36 holes of real golf tomorrow & Sunday. No complaints, but glad to get the episode uploaded in time for your enjoyment. 😎
That's pretty funny that people care about details so small that nobody would notice like Maximum Compacities for Hopper Cars and that was a pretty fun show there!
Once again I'm here playing catch up, just finished the last 3 episodes, great content as always, really enjoyed the SD39, they were one of my favorite locomotives on the SP, used to catch them coming out of Taylor yard in LA back in the mid to late 80's, couple of nice looking layouts you got to visit, I always like to watch for things that standout, methods that other modelers use at about 8:06 behind your dad I noticed the drawers under the end of the peninsula which I'll assume is rolling stock storage, I really like that idea, love the decor leading into your Hiawatha elevator area, that framed EMD sign was cool, nice view behind the scenes with the clutter and misplaced cars, we all experience that but sometimes when watching your videos everything is so squared away and its easy to think that everything is perfect and tidy in your space all the time, but you just showed everyone you deal with the same things we all do no matter our skill or level of ability, nice to see that little critter is still around, I really like that engine, also like the yellow arrow on the stick as well, Thanks for another great episode and for being part of my Saturday mornings, looking forward to the next episode
Great feedback. Reflecting back to the 80’s, makes for a fun memory. Great eye on car storage…I’d guess Joe’s storing cars in there as well. He does a LOT of custom resin & kit building. A number of pieces have been collected over the years for decor. My wife is amazing & has supported all the RR relics being put on display. The EMD is off a GP38-2. As for the RR, it gets congested from time to time, but takes less than 30 mins to clear & re-stage. Thanks for tuning in, honored to be a part of your weekly routine. Have a great weekend!
Expellant Video. I very much enjoy the back in time stuff, I also like that you are showing us where those old videos are shot from. I do wonder about that Curmudgeon, only 470 feet, that isn't much. He must live in the smallest state in the USA.
The Curmudgeon isn’t the keenest cat on the block. One could guess it’s 470 HO scale feet! 😆 The back in time clips have been a huge hit & the maps are being added for my personal feelings towards knowing exactly where we’re looking from. Hopefully you enjoy the remaining two episodes of Season 7.
A bit heavier on the prototype this episode, but the exchange between Greg, Frank & Bob was great. It’s the fellow rail-fan that makes it fun, right?!?
@@SootheMilwaukeeRoad Seeing some of the people that I used to railfan with, hang out with ... Chooch, Greg, Dave H. among the others... again thank you so very much ... Signed, Mike Penn aka RailArtist...
You forgot the high side 4427 or the ps4000. Another one FMC 4700. Lol. I know the hopper types, to make it easier in jmri ops it’s a 3BAY COV HOP. Another awesome job on the episode.! We need more Bob garden job footage!
You said it!!! So many more hopper types. Who can keep track?!? I’m trying though. There’s no more Garden Job footage, but he’s got some South Town footage.
Honestly, the one detail for accuracy that I care about for the covered hoppers I choose to pick up is: "does it fit my era?". Great show, looks like you've been part of some really fun ops sessions! Have a good one!
There’s something to be said for those that don’t get sucked into the rabbit hole of sticking to the prototype…I like the looser era approach, so I say, “Roll what ya like!”
@Soo the Milwaukee Road Nothing wrong with that. To be honest, I try to stick to my era so that I don't drain my wallet too quickly. There's so much I like that I'd go broke if I didn't give myself limits lol
As always, a fun episode. Loved the run-by and the trackside film from Bob Rivard. I really appreciate the overhead views and the maps you show before hand. Fun Ops sessions, what I wouldn't give for an Ops session with my dad! Thanks! - Paul
I do enjoy the operations part of the video, as you are do it the correct way, you show the peoples doing the jobs and playing the game. It is opposite of those the stick the camera at track level and slow roll a train past the camera... those are boring!
So glad you like the variety. Some don’t care for the style of editing or selections, but as it has been stated from the beginning, “It’s merely a compilation of documentation & experiences that get selected to be enjoyed. It’s not THE way to do things, it’s just another way to do it.” Great to hear you’re enjoying them this far. Only two episodes remain in season 7.
Though not my road, the era is the same. Brings back a lot of memories from my childhood seeing the piggy-back cars with the semi-trailers on them. Grew up in New Haven, IN just east of Ft. Wayne. Very much a train town! I'm working on a small HO switching layout that works some of the industries between New Haven and Ft. Wayne back in the late 70s. Take a look at Google Maps of the area sometime.
Thanks Tom! Excellent feedback, as you’re so right about the volume of commercials…we’ll see if I can’t find a way to cut down on the frequency. They auto-generate at the “pauses” and the series is obviously filled with breaks.

I wonder what an op sesh would look like with Jerry, George, Kramer, and Elaine. Kramer: You guys didn’t wear the hats I sent you? Elaine: Kramer, I’m NOT wearing an engineer’s cap. Kramer: Oh, you gotta wear it. You gotta wear it and you gotta say “All aboard!” Jerry: When is this over? I have a date and I need time to wash this smell off me. George: What smell? I don’t smell anything. Jerry: This DCC loco comes with lights, sound, and smell. Elaine: Let me see that. (She sniffs it) That’s not the locomotive, that’s you! Your shirt smells like… George: Great episode William!
George: That’s not Jerry OR the locomotive…it’s Kramer, he bought these hats off four homeless guys off 83rd street. They were selling everything they owned…I got a screaming deal on one of their shopping carts. Elaine: You BOUGHT a homeless guys shopping cart?!? George: Well yeah, it said everything must go. Jerry: You buy the contents, not their property. That’s their most prized possession!!! Buying a shopping cart from a homeless person, is like buying a strippers lingerie. There’s nothing left to hold their goods. George: That’s beautiful. Jerry: Thanks.
Ha ha!!! I’m surprised it took this long to pickup on the distance…it was 475 feet to the other side if this room…but that’s a HUGE room. Figured state would be better, but neighborhood would probably be the best option. 🤦🏻♂️ Next time! 😆
cool it's Friday!! always looking forward to your new episode :) getting close to the end. So what is wrong with that DP caboose? is it the new 2023 GN release? I got the x310
Thanks for tuning in & posting. To answer your question? Yes, it’s a 2023 DP caboose. The issue is with X-13 (Big Sky Blue) X1…the logo letting and goat is unexpectable. You’ll see in a future episode…as the solution is getting there, but at the cost of these cabooses?!? We were told, “Return it or deal with it.” Currently, I’m trying to resolve the lettering…it’s not for the faint of heart.
@rdgk1se3019 we’d have to agree and also ask, “What scale” is the Curmudgeon talkin’?!?” If he’s talking actual feet of 1:87 cars?!? The 470 actual 1:1 feet of 1:87 RR, translates into 40,975 “Modeled Feet”. 🤔 she outta be more clear when making these radical statements. 😆
So true Mark! We’re creatures of habit…a few stray from the herd and model things they’ve never seen, but it’s not the norm. What’s an open top hopper?!? 😜
