In hindsight, I really didn't need to remove the wind generator before taking the rudder off, but I'm so glad I did because it needed to come off the boat for various reasons. It was a challenge to get the rudder off because I was scared and didn't really know what I was doing, but it worked out just fine in the end because I had some awesome help from the guys in the yard. I'm so happy to be here working on the boat. I can't wait to update you on the status of the rudder and next steps! If you're dying to hear the news, you can find current updates and more information about my boat projects on Patreon.com/SailingArtha (RU-vid is scheduled about 2 months out).
Thank you so much for watching and supporting. A special shout-out to my patrons, some of whom have been with me from the very beginning, and to those who have donated or bought off my wish list (all these links can be found in my bio). I can't wait to see where this boat takes me and share it with all of you. This is just the beginning, and I really need your help to make it happen!
At this point, I’ve got $3,780 towards getting the new boat officially in my name. The price tag is $25,000 which means I’m still trying to front $21,220. I’ve got boat projects well underway and hope I can pay off the boat in time to go sailing when I finish these projects. If you’d like to help, please send a YT super thanks, donate to my GoFundMe (gofund.me/9ef2...) or send a donation on PayPal.me/NicoleDemetra. Thank you all for your support.

Looks like you have a big job ahead of you. The rudder may need to be redone from the ground up. I think it would be faster rebuilding it than trying to salvage this one as it appears well damaged. Good luck.

Good Nz morning. Didn't Confucius say, a journey of a 1000 miles, begins with the first step. Ok the rudder is off, that's the first step. Now begins the next steps, sort the rudder, grind back on the hull, antifoul, replace your anodes, replace rudder, and whatever else needs doing. Oh heck, I wish I was able to get up there to help you, however I'm with you in Spirit. In a previous life I owned a nearly 40 ft flush decker in ferrocement, allegedly capable of bouncing off reefs, and have done basic hull maintenance, plus incidentals , every year., including anodes, and fortunately, no toledo worm has evolved to get into ferrocement. Loving your channel. Thanks again for sharing. Take care and atb from down under.

Pushing the pintles out of the gudgeons is fun work. It's hard enough for two people and you did most of it yourself. Impressive. BTW, the one-boot look is quite the fashion statement. Soon you'll have all the other females in the boatyard copying you. All kidding aside you are doing a great job. You are showing the other side of Caribbean boating that not many see. You know we're all encouraging you as best we can.

Yes, I can't believe YOU just did that either. Pure definition of manhandled. Good job guys, helping the crazy one boot girl from hurting herself with precarious rudder and falling wind generator. And the mutigrips on nuts? You have sockets right there in shot, it would save the nuts for next use. But sorry, forgot the theme again. You're so wonderful, you go girl.

Now that you can see it properly, find out what it will cost to replace the rudder and then make your decisions referencing that. Sometimes you have to give a value to the time you work on something especially compared to yard fees and the like.

Great job ! What does that xtra little piece on the back of the rudder do ? If the whole rudder is too far gone you have the option to custom build a more ' hi tech' design rudder. Nice to see her out of the water for a full view, the BCC keel is pretty massive ! Old boats are a great labor of love fer sure. Keep up the good work, slow and steady wins every time !

You have some work to do it, but this is nothing that you cannot handle, good luck with the project. Great videos. BTW, your windvane, its a Ratcliffe, used to be made in Massachusetts, I had one just like that on my previous boat, I have the documentation if you need it.
@SailingArtha
@SailingArtha 11 месяцев назад
Awesome info about the wind vane. I thought it might have been a Pardey style. They designed it for a BCC. Would love the specs on the Ratcliffe though if that’s what it is!
@MarceloPires-q6o
@MarceloPires-q6o 11 месяцев назад
@sailingArtha - I recognized it by their unique universal joint of 2 brackets right above the trim tab connecting it to the rod. It's an awesome windvane, perhaps you can show it in one of your future videos, but you have a lot of other stuff to do now... If you need the documentation for any reason, reach out to me, not sure how though.

If you are going to build a new rudder, I recommend using an African hardwood called bubinga. It is available in long enough lengths, is very strong, and is virtually impervious to marine worms. It is hard to work, but worth the effort. I built a new rudder for my Glander Cay 23 out of bubinga and was very satisfied with the result. That rudder looks shot to me. It is simple to build a new one ( have built many.) I do not like the flat bottom profile. I think that this type of rudder should have an upwards curve from tne bottom pintle.

We're trying to plan our next hurricane destination. What's the name of the marina you are at? We also beed to do our bottom.
@SailingArtha
@SailingArtha 7 месяцев назад
Luperon is a really good hurricane hole in the Caribbean with a lot of mooring balls, a small marina called Las Velas, and separate boat yard called Tropical. Tropical hauls boats on a trailer and I don’t think they take boats bigger than 40 feet, but there is another marina in Puerto Plata called OceanWorld. Some people go there as well.

Your doing a nice job. Tip one, Plan your work, Work your plan. Looks like your doing that. Keep NOTES.. also, we always have, nu sacks. Small, burlap sacks with strings to collect "all" the nuts, bolts, washers then tie it to the part removed. Such as that wind Gen, rudder whatever. In your case, on a boat rather than the aircraft we work on, you will want to compare with replacements. Don't be cheap in this. 90% of all your hardware needs To be replaced, not reused... not worth the risk to save this.. it's what will fail down the road... ALL connection points, are your weak links. Be wise!! Hardware is VERY important. Also, don't be cheap on using the RIGHT lubricants too. AND KEEP NOTES, for future maintenance records.. WITH DATES/TIME. Every night do your paperwork.. You'll do OK, your smart. Just make sure your organization is right as well. Plan your work Work your plan!!! Don't forget, this is your house, and when your alone, with no land in sight, there's no AAA. Do it right!!

Hi there,You mentioned putting the boat on the hard for three or four months? .. I've owned wooden sailboats for some forty years..I highly recommend against doing this , This will result in major problems as wooden sailboats must be kept wet in salt water. Four months in the tropics on the hard would seriously damage your boat .
@SailingArtha
@SailingArtha 11 месяцев назад
Noted, thanks! This is a fiberglass hull though. It’s just the rudder that is wooden.

@@SailingArtha .. that's excellent news for a boat in the tropics . I'm from New Zealand and been cruising around the planet on a sailboat for almost thirty years. I'm in FL right now giving my boat a freshen up . Maybe we will cross paths..

So I'm kinda dense. Your BCC is fiberglass but your rudder is wooden, is that right? I hope u end up stripping all the paint off the wood on ur boat. BCC's should be varnished, not painted, in my humble opinion. AWESOME boat though.
@SailingArtha
@SailingArtha 11 месяцев назад
Yea I found it unusual too. From what I learned on the FB Lyle Hess group, the rudder would be foam coring. The hull though yes, it’s solid fiberglass. Thanks for watching, and in my dream world I’d have it varnished. Maybe when I’m bored at sea I’ll work on that!
