What an unexpected gravel road we discovered with so much beauty along it while travelling to Rouxville. Birds, Nile monitor, antelope and of course the amazing scenery. Then we arrived in the little town of Rouxville. It was interesting to learn that the town was started as a halfway stopover for mail delivery in 1863. The distance between Smithfield and Aliwal North was too far for a horse and wagon to travel in just one day. Driving through the streets of this little town was great fun. A lot of the old buildings were still in fairly good shape, but what was surprising to see was how many new houses were being built. That was truly encouraging and made us happy to think that the townsfolk were busying themselves with upliftment. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #rouxville #freestate #mail

Such a blessing to see so much wild life along the gravel road. I love lukkewaan, once i surprised two huge ones in flagrante, erm....love the dung beetle, his ball wasnt round but he still had the balls to get it moving! I think your antelope are hartebees but I could be wrong. Beautiful stone church in Rouxville. Reminds me strongly of a lovely church in Kroonstad built by Gerhardus Moerdijk. Wonder if it wasnt the same. 62 a ripe old age? Well I am 63! And theres plenty of life left in the ousus! Thank you for showing us the beaut iful free state.
@DustBugsTravel
@DustBugsTravel Год назад
That water monitor was a great sighting for us and we spent a fair bit of time admiring it! 🦎 I still feel that 62 was a ripe old age for Johanna van der Merwe to have reached, especially in those days and after having suffered such severe wounds from assegai attacks. In this day and age, 62 (and 63!!) is still a spring chicken though. 😁 I haven't been able to find who designed the Dutch Reformed Church in Rouxville, but I thought the stonework was magnificent. We did see a church later on in our trip which was designed by Gerard Moerdyk. So glad you're enjoying our travels through this part of the Free State, it was really a good experience for us too! 🚗🧡

It was fascinating that so many new houses were bring built! Interesting that you've seen those silver trimmings before, we didn't even know they existed! We were really spoilt with all kinds of wildlife on the gravel road and that is always a highlight for us. Thank you for coming along again! 🦎🦌

Antelope......inbreed between bontebok and blesbok. Poor Johanna was still a teenager in 16/7 February 1838 at Moordkrans when she was stabbed. In ABW2 General Jan Hendrik Olivier, the commander of the Free State forces in SE Free State launched the attack in the Eastern Cape "hero of the Stormberge". After the war he became a senator for Rouxville in the Orange River Colony government. As a de Wet supporter he resigned in 1914 (the rebellion, but was not involved. He visited in 1930 his daughter and son-in-law, Ockert BRITS in Volksrust where he suddenly die, thus his grave is in the Eastern Transvaal. His wife's grave somewhere on a farm in Rouxville. Weereens 'n treffende video

@DustBugsTravel Год назад
Thank you for the interesting info, as always! 👌🏻I thought those two antelope had some blesbok in them, I see this hybrid is known as bontebles or baster blesbok, I've never heard either of these two names before. 🦌 Johanna van der Merwe was a true heroine and we were happy to see such a brave and courageous woman honoured. Such rich wartime history in this area, we appreciate you providing it. 🚗🏛️

🥰👍🏼 you probably find property prices are very low in these little places..and as more and more people are able to work on line.. hopefully people will start repopulating these wonderful little towns.. I truely hope so . Some stunning old buildings still standing, would be nice if they can be saved instead of either falling down or torn down. Thanks for another great adventure. Loved the wild life along that awesome stretch of dust road... Happy Travels 🚗✨💖

The wildlife on that gravel road really set the tone for the day, we were blown away by the variety of animals and birds. We're not sure about Rouxville specifically, but we've been to other small towns where the property prices are steadily increasing as cityfolk discover them and the quality of life they provide. If we were able to work remotely, we would've certainly considered exchanging the city for a small country town. The only problem is we wouldn't have been able to choose, we love them all so much! 🤩 It was interesting to see so many new builds, that must surely be an indication of more people moving into town. That was quite encouraging. So happy you enjoyed our trip to Rouxville! 😁🚗

@@DustBugsTravel 😄 tis also a reason Im loving your channel.. checking out all the little towns and what they look like now compared to back when I was traveling around the country.. we moved to a tiny village nearly 12 years ago, and have loved living here. I think in the last 2 years over a hundred people have moved here so far, and they keep coming in from the big cities.. only problem is some want to change the atmosphere of our village by wanting more and more of what they're used to in the city, like our dust roads for instance..we love them, but they want tar and street lights something we definitely don't want..at the moment we only have one main tar road which runs thru the town. Our village is only 15km from a small town so the older residents here have tried to maintain the small village vibe which we love so much..the more people move in the further away our wildlife wonder.. but it's still wild and beautiful..for now.🚗✨💖

Rouxville indeed has a CBD where locals obtain goods and services from. We happened to enter the town from a backroad, as we do, and decided to continue on straight towards the direction of the church and residential area. We completely forgot to return to the area where we assume the CBD is, but simply stopped at the first shop we could find, a U-Save, and then exited the town. 🤷🏻‍♂️

😁 It's all about context. I honestly feel that Johanna van der Merwe, having suffered and survived so many assegai wounds which could've so easily been fatal, was a remarkable woman and I think blessed to have reached the age of 62.
