Seeing the small group of gorgeous gemsbok along the road to Kleinzee was such a great start to this leg of our trip, they are such beautiful antelope. Then having to stop in the middle of the road to wait for a male ostrich to move out of the way was a first for us and we were the only vehicle on the road to witness this. Then we arrived in the small village of Kleinzee which is situated on the West Coast of the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. It was so encouraging to see that this town was dealing with the slowdown in mining activity in a positive way. As far as we could tell, they were turning their attention towards tourism because we could see so many holiday homes and guesthouses all over town. The sports facilities are not in bad shape and we even visited the Kleinzee Angling Club. We truly love seeing small towns thriving like Kleinzee! #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #kleinzee #westcoast #northerncape #mining

A lovely little town that has survived De Beers stopping mining there. An interesting fact I just read on Google last night is that both Koingnaas and Kleinzee are the only two towns in South Africa that are exempt from load shedding something to do with if they were put off it would cause a much bigger problem for the rest of the country. They are still trying to sort out the problem but so far have not been successful. Lucky towns. I just love that quiet life lovely!!!!! Thank you for this restful episode.

Love the ostriches! so loslyf flerries! I just have one gripe! For you Curtis, I have a face to the voice, but for you, Sonia, I have none. Please let me see you, just a foto will do if you dont want to perform for the camera! Sseblief! I am a people person. Love the campsite, would love to camp there. I think Kleinzee with a z is closer to the original Nederlands. Thanks for showing us another unique and interesting place

Now that is one Christmas wish I won't be able to grant. Sonia still flatly refuses to appear on camera. 🤷🏼‍♂️ I promise you I'm trying, but no luck so far! We also thought that the 'z' in the name indicated that it was most probably a Dutch name in the beginning. I've just checked up on that and, according to Wikipedia, the town was 'originally the site of a freehold farm called Kleyne Zee', which of course means small sea. So you are correct. 👌🏻 We're glad we could take you along to Kleinzee! 😁🚗

Some of my school mates lived in hostels; guys from Koiingnaas, Noup, Kleinzee, MacDougall's Bay, Port & Alex. De Beers had a very long, aero style shiny aluminium bus that had brought them to Worcester, Paarl and Cape Town.

And the hopping ostriches were such a highlight, we just love them to bits! 🥰 That male was a real showoff, but we were worried about him being in the road. We feel exactly the same about the residents of Kleinzee, they have clearly picked themselves up and seem to be going strong. We were particularly impressed with the number of businesses in town for the size of the place. With such a stunning setting, we hope visitors will frequent and support the town. Ok so you know I will be back. Promise for the last time. Kleinzee - was the last standing place for Nama Vent. Also some memories for me but Koingnaas is my strongest memory, so strong that when I looked at your video, I could feel and smell the place and feel the hot sand under my feet and the place I long for the most if Pretoria gets to much crowded and loud. The open spaces and clean air and the quiteness. Keinzee was more of a place for my sister and brother-in-law, Danie and Alta du Toit. Their sons were grew up in Kleinzee, Alta were a teacher for many, many years at the school and you remember the tareroad from Koiingnaas, well Danie were the surveyor who marked out the road so that it could be built. They retired from De Beers and Kleinzee in 1982 if I am correct. Outside Kleinzee you will find the small town of Grootmis just as you go over the Buffels. There stayed a man with his daughter and son. Respectifly called Stingel, Blaar en Blommetjie. I think the father were Blommetjie but am not to sureSon and father drove the Landrovers that came and fech us schoolkids from Alexanderbaai during the long holidays (June an Dec) My dad picked me up at Kleinzee and then we still had to take the sandroad next to the sea to Koingnaas. On the way we plotted out the best sloepe to come and look for crayfish. Thank you for taking me back down memory road, from Hondeklipbaai to Kleinzee. I still also have memories of Michelsbaai, Groenriviersmond Spoegrivier, Tietiesbaai and further down towards Strandfontein and Vredendal. Safe travels and be safe

Good morning. Just waiting for loadshedding to begin and end. So I have been thinking about the row of garages in Koingnaas, Kleinzee and Alexbay. Those were the garages were the vehicles of the people that lived in those towns, back in the day when you had to be screened to enter or exite the town area, were kept safe. Your outside vehicle for traveling to Springbok, Cape Town or to family were stored there and once you were through the checkpoint(building enter one side,exit otherside) you used your inside old vehicle to get around where ever in town you wanted to go. Those days cars were left open, with their keys in the ignition and never got stolen.Now all those towns are open but the garages are the reminder of the days you got screened to see if you have diamonds on you. Nerveracking when you exit the town because you never knew when you would get the red buzzer to go through screening.
@DustBugsTravel
@DustBugsTravel Год назад
Thank you for that info! 👍🏻 We've come to understand the garages a little better now from your comments and those from other viewers. We had no idea about this though when we saw the first row of garages as we drove into Koingnaas and it was fascinating to us! This is just one small part of why these once-closed mining towns are so intriguing to us. Even the red buzzer at the exit sounds cool, yet scary at the same time! 🚗🚨

Congratulations on reaching your 8000 subs 👏 milestone...Kleinsee looks like an awesome spot and you guys definitely know how to showcase a place. I actually like the new format, ie the voice over, I understand that this is due to "mic issues" , however it is great as sometimes we remember more in hindsight too. That caravan park with its amenities is of the best that I have seen...especially the privacy. There's nothing worse than camping on top of each other. At the angling club "there's not a soul about" or was it a sole 🤔 😄...did the mine install a desalination plant ? Or are there underground aquifers providing the town with its water. I recall that there even used to be an airservice to Kleinsee, I think more ad-hoc than scheduled though and in light twins not Boeings. Looking forward to tomorrow's episode 😀
@DustBugsTravel
@DustBugsTravel Год назад
Thank you, thank you! 🍾 I agree wholeheartedly about the caravan park. I loved the setup so close to the ocean and shielded from neighbours and the elements, which I believe can be rather harsh there. When we were still trying out the camping thing (😜), we were always much happier when we were allocated a secluded spot or one at least far away from noise and such. I'm glad you like the new voiceover format. 👍 The editing process is so much more time-consuming though and I'll struggle to keep up and still get 'real' work done! 🙃 We understood from a shop owner at Koingnaas that there is an underground lake which could potentially supply the town with up to five years of water should it be necessary, but I'm not sure about Kleinzee and its water supply. A quick search online delivered nothing as far as desalination plants in the area goes, other than an Environmental Impact Study for such plants providing the mines with water, so I'm really not sure about the water situation and where they get their water from at this point. Another viewer explained that back in the day, a light plane would deliver the daily newspaper and other essentials to the town and a siren would go off once the townsfolk could come and pick up supplies. I found that wildly interesting and supports your point of there having been / being an airstrip close to town. 🛩 I think and hope of course that you will find tomorrow's episode as interesting. We'll see you there tomorrow! 😁🚗 Oh, and there wasn't a soul or sole about at the Angling Club! I believe it changes somewhat on New Year's Eve! 🍻🥳

A closer walk through view of the camping/caravan park would have been appreciated. Your driving view does not give much info. as an avid camper planning to go to Kleinsee myself this would have been appreciated

Our explorations of any town, place or area are for the most part vehicle-based and will always be. All four knees inside the vehicle aren't getting any younger. 😁 We document our travels to and through specific places and film what we find interesting and share those who might also enjoy them. We don't intend to be a review channel for any type of accommodation establishments whatsoever. We're happy to film campsites and caravan parks which we happen upon, like we do with most other facilities and amenities in a specific place, but that's far as it'll go. Happy camping! ⛺

There are houses close to the sea, we drove past most of them as we left the caravan park. I'm not sure if there are others too which we may have missed. Really beautiful and rugged coastline that. 🌊🏘️

Firstly, want to wish you and all the dustbuggers a prosperous 2023. Just a note, the trailer you were confused with, is an ancient tar tanker. Tar was historically used in years gone by to seal roads. The tar when cooled down had to be heated to quite high temperatures to be able to hand apply (by means of buckets) it onto the surface and was then stone-chipped over. Workers suffered lots of burns and inhaled petroleum gasses in the process, therefore the industry moved away from this method. Today they use bitumens rather than tar, it is easier applied by spray trucks, application temperatures are much lower and also much more environmental friendly and much more binder can be applied in one go. Hope this makes sense.

Just to add to my previous comment, tongue in cheek, this might be the best solution to use for repairing all those potholes.
