We are always looking to admire and discover the beauty of South Africa and visiting the special little town of Kenhardt in the Northern Cape with its rich history was worth taking the time to explore. One of the town's most notable landmarks is the Rooiberg Dam, which was built in 1899. This dam was crucial in providing irrigation to the surrounding farms and played a significant role in the town's development. Today, it still stands as a testament to the town's resilience and determination. Another must-see attraction in Kenhardt is the 600-year-old camelthorn tree, which has been declared a national monument. This tree holds a special place in the town's history. Overall, a visit to Kenhardt is a journey back in time. With its stunning natural beauty, charming small-town atmosphere, and fascinating historical landmarks, it's a place that's sure to leave a lasting impression. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #kenhardt

The persons that were executed at Kenhardt, were executed by the British in July 1901 during the Anglo Boer war (1899 - 1902) and not by the Boers. The executed were citizens of the then Cape Colony which was under British rule. They were accused of treason by sympathizing with the Boers of the Transvaal and Freestate, who were at war with Britten. Thank you for the excellent videos.

Driving after dark and witnessing spectacular sunsets long the way are becoming regular occurrences for us and we love them more each trip! 🌄 Our accommodation and dinner were just fantastic after a rather long day of travelling, so it was very much appreciated. The fact that our host took us around to so many special and wonderful places, was a great experience and we loved every minute. There were so many interesting things to check out in Kenhardt, also a name we've ever only heard of before. We're happy we can now say that we've been there and you can too! 😁🚙

What a fantastic sunset! I saw Kenhardt very briefly back in 1987 when we travelled through on a trip to Verneukpan. Fig jam! My ouma used to make such lovely fig jam. Love the drone footage. What a beautiful little town, with the church sitting like a mother hen on a brood of eggs. Wonderful to have somebody show you places of interest. The museum is so interesting. Are those war helmets on the ossewa? My mum had one of those washing machines, she would warn me not to put my hands close to the rollers, as if my hands could reach anyway! That Camel thorn tree really impressed me! A real monument. If only it could talk, what a tale it would tell!
@DustBugsTravel
@DustBugsTravel Год назад
It seems to have become the norm that we drive off into the sunset whenever we're on our way to our overnight stop, so we better quit complaining about driving after dark! 🌄 We don't often eat fig jam, but when we get the opportunity, it's awesome. And it was delicious on that freshly-baked roosterkoek, what a treat to arrive to! 👌🏻 Our host was awesome and she was so generous with her time and knowledge. We feel we got to see places in town which not every tourist gets to see and that made it an extra special experience for us. I definitely think those green helmets must be from the war era, but I don't have details on them. I was equally fascinated by the washing machines and what the folks of yesteryear came up with then already, it actually blows my mind! 🤯 Agreed about the old tree, it's barely clinging to life, but clinging all the same. What a historical place that was for the town and it was good to pay tribute to the tree where it all began! 🚙🌳

Curtis, Sonia and fellow Dusty commune, hello again after another fantastic trip. Curtis, young man, I will be 70 on Monday but you and I have a kindred spirit which I knew on my first trip with you and the gang. Wrap around verandas take me way back to my grand and great grand parents home in Durbs and Pmburg. as a lighty. Jumping over the walls , skating on the red polished cement floors...… What an unknown gem Kenhardt is. Just a thought, why is it not possible for volunteer divers save a town by unblocking and making the sluice function again. The other is to fill water in the catchment that is around the 600-year-old camelthorn tree by the townsfolk as a Sunday thanksgiving. Any whoo, thank you all buddies for an experience we may never have shared.
@DustBugsTravel
@DustBugsTravel Год назад
I had my fair share of time spent on red polished floors and jumping over walls and fences, so I can identify with the memory you sketched. I have vague memories of wraparound porches at family homes, but I was still very young. I absolutely loved seeing so many in Kenhardt. I could literally sit there for hours, if not days. 🏡 Those sound like pretty plausible suggestions and I hope somewhere someone sees them and put some of your ideas into action. Thank you once again for taking this trip with us, it's always great fun when you come along! 🚙🌳

@@DustBugsTravel 🤞Ask Darling Elma to let you know if it comes to fruition. There's a lot of towns out there that can be brought back to former glory if municipalities and government want to play fair with rates, taxpayers and most of all God's children living in hope for someone who cares to come along.

Hi you two! Thank you for this trip into the Kalahari, with a spectacular sunset-welcome into Kenhardt, and the morning departure from your stay-over, with --- cuppas! The aerial view of the town really shows its uniqueness in the wide desert area. Thanks for sending up the drone. The town is really neat and I like those porched houses. There won't be many places in the world that were founded by a policeman under an old tree! May that old tree survive for another couple of hundred years together with the town. The old dam was also quite a surprise (gravel road and all!). Even if it does not serve the town directly, I am sure it can help the sheep farmers. I hope Kenhardt will be spared more flooding such as we saw in the photos. Again it is nice to see and old little town treasuring their history. Thank you for taking me there. Keep safe!
@DustBugsTravel
@DustBugsTravel Год назад
There is so much to love about Kenhardt. I echo your sentiment about those wraparound porches, I could easily spend all day every day on one of those! 😍🏡 I so enjoy sending up the drone and I was very pleased with the footage of Kenhardt. It makes me happy that you enjoyed it too! The cuppas with the birdsong that particular morning was just a surreal experience and set the tone beautifully for the rest of the day. ☕🐦 Let's hope that very special old tree survives for another few hundred years like you say, it was rather awe-inspiring standing in its presence, knowing that it's been there for at least 500 years! That's next level! 💚🌳

Good morning...I am glad to see that the Camelthorn tree is still standing, And thanx for showing us all the other things we never see. Yes that is a little town with quite a history. And imagine sitting with such a big dam and you cannot use the water.. .
@DustBugsTravel
@DustBugsTravel Год назад
It was a rather sacred moment I spent at that old tree and all I could think about, was the stories it must be able to tell and the things it must've seen. As you saw, it's barely clinging to life, so I'm happy to have been able to see it while it's still fighting. 🌳😍 It was sad to see the dam basically lying dormant and the sluices not being able to be opened anymore. We understood the dam was a great asset to Kenhardt, so I hope it's brought back to proper life in the near future. Thank you for visiting this special town with us! 😁🚙

Beautiful. I stopped there for fuel many years ago on my way from Keimoes to Cape Town with two of my aunt. A 'traveller' asked something in English and I spoke straight back without hesitation (having grown up in Australia). One aunt commented, 'As daai man nou met jou oom Engels gepraat het sou hy gedood het voor hy gepraat het'. He avoid English speakers. The town is much, much lovelier than I recollect. Thank you again. I'm really grateful to you both for such pleasant journeys.

I had a good chuckle about your story of the English traveller and your uncle reminded me somewhat of Sonia's dad, who also loved Afrikaans with all his heart and was doubtful about any South African who couldn't or at least didn't try to speak it. 😍 Kenhardt is a great little town where one could easily sit on a wraparound porch for a week and just watch the world go by! 😁🚙

Does anyone know the condition of the road between Kenhardt and Putsonderwater? I am planning a road trip in August and would love to revisit Putsonderwater. If the road is like the one going out of town to the dam it would be fine, but 40 years ago my father damaged his car on a terrible gravel road going to Putsonderwater, though I can’t recall if we came from Kenhardt’s side or from the N10 or from Upington as it was so long ago. Of course a lot can change in 40 years. I would appreciate input from anyone who knows, as going across to Kenhardt would shave many kilometres off my onward journey to Calvinia where I have booked accommodation. Kenhardt also looks interesting and I would love to explore it too after seeing this video. Thanks for yet another informative episode. Several other Dustbugs videos have influenced my choice of route for the trip I am planning, and I am really looking forward to seeing so many amazing sights first hand!

We visited Putsonderwater in Episode 272 and approached from the Marydale side. As always, we travelled in a small sedan and the only obstacle we experienced was a rather big puddle of water which turned out to be quite shallow, so we made it just fine. The road from the Kenhardt side was totally passable too and when we returned two days later, the puddle had all but dried. We always take it super slow on gravel though. Our trip was about 18 months ago, I would imagine the current road conditions would mainly depend on recent rainfall in the area. I suggest you get in touch with both Marydale and Kenhardt SAPS for current info. Happy and safe travels! 🚙😁

We didn't drive from Kenhardt to Marydale, but we did several other routes innthe area, which I'll outline for you. We visited Marydale and Draghoender (Episode 271) and drove to Putsonderwater (Episode 272) on a Friday. The road was fair, but there were a few patches of water from obvious recent rains. We made it through fine in a sedan though. On the Sunday we drove from Kenhardt back on the Putsonderwater road (Episode 279) and the road had dried up quite significantly. I've shown quite a bit of the roads in these three episodes, so feel free to have a look. These trips were all done on 10 and 12 February 2023. I hope this helps you. Safe travels! 🚙😁
