And KWT is high on the fascinating list! We got to see some gorgeous historical and other buildings and it was really a pleasant visit to this pretty and busy town. We were happy to see the loco at the station, but super sad that it is so neglected. 🚂😢 February will roll around before you know it, you must be crazy excited by now! 🇿🇦✈️

Wow! I was so hoping you would visit King. I have some precious memories of this as our stopover at the Grosvenor Hotel. After a long road trip, Ma would be very tired and would have to settle my little brother who was always difficult. So Dad would take me for a walk down the street to visit the Catholic Church and see the lovely statues in the garden. Its a very precious memory I have of my dad who was a very difficult man. I dont think the hotel is still extant. The Sacred Heart church you visited later on looks suspiciously like the same one me and dad saw. The building with the old steam roller thingies in the garden could well have been the old Grosvenor. But we are talking nearly 60 years ago. Swimming pools were known as baths when I was little. My family background is mostly Afrikaans, and it is swembaddens in Afrikaans ne cest pas? Qonce...not so difficult to say, just pretend you playing tennis with your tongue! Oh, a choo-choo! Looks a bit sad but still...a choo-choo. Really enjoyed all the historic buildings. So glad you found a nice place to stay.
@DustBugsTravel
@DustBugsTravel 10 месяцев назад
It may very well be the Sacred Heart you and your dad visited, such a precious memory. 👨‍👧💒 I'm rather adept at the clicking sounds of the Xhosa language, but I have a hard time getting Qonce correct each time, it's very difficult. We loved the old loco, but really felt sorry for it in its neglected state. 🚂😢 We're always happy for a swimming bath, most have been changed to pools nowadays. 🤽🏻🏊🏻‍♂️

Hi you two! Thanks for another beautiful excursion! My first surprise was Qonce. I am not keeping track of the name changes and would not even know someone was referring to King Williams Town when using that name. It is a good link, however, to its Khoi Khoi past. The stone buildings are fascinating, the Catholic Church monumental. It is a pity that so many places of interest are not accessible, but the Town is very impressive. The green suburbs look pleasant to live in. The big schools tells me that Qonce is has been thriving throughout its history. Your drone view (and music!) again put everything in perspective, even the neat original layout of the place, as can be seen by the situation of the old churches from above. Thank you again for a great trip. I am ready for the next one! Keep safe!
@DustBugsTravel

Qonce is a difficult one, even for my tongue which is rather adept at the clicking sounds. 🤷🏻‍♂️ The number of beautiful buildings literally blew us away and the church buildings especially were exceptionally beautiful. 💒 I so wish we could've gotten inside that graveyard though, that looked very interesting. 🏛️ This is a neat and pretty town, we were pleasantly surprised by that. 🚙😍

Ancestral town for me, and your 1846 reference connected dots. My great great grandfather arrived with the 7th Dragood Guards in 1846. Outside the old SABC building is a drift named after him when he was attacked bringing rations etc in via ox wagon, his injuries forcing retirement. Then owned 2x hotels, which I wonder if they still exist.

Hi guys amazing video so many lovely old buildings a shame they have to be fenced in but at least the ae being kept in good condition the main road looks busy with a large variety of shops the story of huberta the hippo was so interesting also the history of the cattle killing. The lynch gate was great lots of these in the UK ( they are supposed to keep the devil out of the church) St Andrews Church stunning and the memorial to the Two world wars with the soldier in front definitely wwi uniform with his 303 Lee Enfield and 22 inch bayonet) loved the drill hall with the plaque of 1887 Queen Victoria. Dale colledge was impressive plus the functioning swimming baths the houses with the cast iron balconies fantastic real colonial style the history was so interesting and British Caperoinia a new one on me the railway station looks in good nick being repurposed as a bus terminal. The Sacred heart Catholic Church stunning stone with the lovely grotto outstanding. Loved the old traction engine and trailer. We have traction engine festivals here in the UK so great to see them running!!!the spare shop must be one of the best in the world crazy!!! The drone footage shows the leafy suburbs off to a tee .KWT is one of the most impressive towns for architecture and churches. I mention about my uncles house not having a bathroom in 1978 my relatives went for their weekly bath to the local swimming baths the rest of the week the washed in a tin bath in the kitchen. Thanks for adding to my education of SA. Cheerio till the next one

We don't often realise and appreciate how easy we have it today compared to those who had to go to the public swimming bath once a week for a good old wash. 🛁 I loved that you saw so much detail in that statue, even his uniform and weapon. I was a bit afraid to watch this. I grew up in King William's Town in the late 70's and 80's. I went to KHS until I was in Std. 4 (we still had the Sub A and Sub B back then). Then we moved to Grahamstown and never really looked back. I remember the cinema in the center of town. I remember seeing the big poster of The Neverending Story....my mom took me to see that twice. My father was of German descent and immigrated to South Africa after the war. He built KWT Motor Engineering in the 60's I think it was. At the one end of the town I remember a rustic carpenter's workshop owned by an man called Jockel. I wonder if it's still there. My brother's started Grey Monument Private Clinic and had a dr's surgery in the center of town also. I have so many great memories and I'm still nervous to watch your video....but I will.....

I thought the aerial shots captured the neatness of the town quite well. 🌳🏡 Because I film with my cellphone, I can see on the screen where I'm pointing the camera, even if it's over a fence. 🏊🏻‍♂️🤽🏻 Safety was the only reason I didn't investigate the loco up close. 🤷🏻‍♂️🚂
