Carpal Tunnel sucks when you're an artist. I feel you. I wanted to make a silicone tongue for a monster I built. Your tutorial will help with that. Thanks.

Really helpful, thanks. My puppet is made of Cedar, a shopping cart parts, and moter cycle chain and epoxy interchangeable heads with the different expressions. Clay sculpting over it now and researching the silicone application and mold making was really helpful.

You're right about the cuticle scissors. I tried using a pair today that were just junk. I'll try and find some good ones at a make-up shop.

Hi, I'm curious about how it would work to do something like this with a jointed armature instead of wire?
@ΒΑΣΙΛΙΚΗΚΑΝΕΛΛΗ
Hello and sorry for my bad English. I want to make a realistic silicone hand for nail practice. I wonder if you could tell me which silicone to buy for better results. I was thinking about Plastil gel 10. Also i d like your advice if i decided to make it pose able. The method that you used is what i must do also,or you can suggest something else Thanks a lot.

Hi great video I have a question what though what do you do when the wire breaks?

Great video! When using a 2 part mold as opposed to a glove mold to avoid seams...(I am making silicone dolls for very particular collectors) I am wondering if seams after removing and filling would be visable at all? Also if I wanted only bendable arms and legs should I still make a full body armaure or just put it in the places I want to bend?Thank you
@stopmotionmagazine
@stopmotionmagazine 7 лет назад
First you should always consider your design so if you just need arms and legs then just mold and cast those. Now as for seams. You can completely get rid of them but you'll need to practice removing them to really get it to work. What I've found is cutting them a little so they indent slightly into the puppet and then fill it with a new mixture of the silicone and then smooth it with Bestine. Also, some master puppet fabricators that I've worked with have used green plastic scrubbing pads or various foams attached to a Dremel to remove the seam and smooth it out. Lots of different techniques, but the Bestine smoothing is my personal favorite.

nice video!..whats the reason for doing the first thin layer of silicone in the cast... is that to make sure you dont see armature parts sticking out after molding?

I used PlatsilGel 10 to cast a puppet, however I found that silicone was too thick and gel like and made it near impossible to control and get into all the details. Any ideas why?

+YCM ** Looks like that's an additive. You add it to the silicone to thin it. Contact them directly and see if they can suggest a good silicone for your needs. They're really nice and should be able to answer your questions. Tell them Stop Motion Magazine sent you. ;)

Great tutorials! I bought a liquid latex though, can I also do it with this?
@stopmotionmagazine
@stopmotionmagazine 8 лет назад
+Eva Margon No, that requires a slightly different method. You can build the mold roughly about the same except you'll need exit holes. You'd paint in a few layers of liquid latex, let it dry and then strap the mold together and then pour in expanding urethane mold into a pour hold you made when building the mold. Thats the basics of how to do that, but I have to warn you that method is not easy and a lot of things can go wrong. I would highly suggest using a buildup method when making puppets out of liquid latex. Good luck.

+stopmotionmagazine What about this way: I first pour liquid latex in first mould, wait to dry and then pour latex in the other half and put the first one (dry one) on top of this one? You think it's possible? Would they "glue" together?
@Spinocroc123
@Spinocroc123 8 лет назад
Pouring latex into a mold will create a puddle that will never cure properly. You could also use a Slush-casting method were you actually pour your latex into the mold, let it sit there for an hour, drain your excess latex into a bucket (you can reuse it later) and then close the mold and let the remaining rubber to cure. And what happens is that the ultracal absorbs moisture out of the latex and forms a skin inside.

I could not find the same silicone you are using would this one from Motion Picture F/X be pretty much the same? motionpicturefx.com/Silicones-Pigments-Additives/v-1068-gallon-kit Also could I do the same process but make use a silicone mold using one of their mold silicones?

Hi, Honestly I'm not sure. I haven't been there in awhile and they change formulas year to year. I would suggest calling them and asking about their tin based silicones for casting puppets or animatronics.

stopmotionmagazine Which shore (hardness) is it in the silicone?
@stopmotionmagazine
@stopmotionmagazine 9 лет назад
Off hand I can't remember. I can tell you that Tin-Sil Gel can be found on the internet and you can control the hardness with different additives. Also, Tin-Sil Gel is very similar to human flesh. So it is very fun to work with.

+stopmotionmagazine if I use tinsil gel 10, can I change skin tone with the pigment from peachy to brown?
@stopmotionmagazine
@stopmotionmagazine 8 лет назад
Tin-Sil Gel comes in either peach or clear. Go for the clear and order the pigment that you want. I would suggest looking up Polytek and getting TinSil Gel-10. That should be translucent clear gel silicone that you can tent.
