Please note that some parts of the video are shaky due to my poor camera work. It was filmed in September 2023 at Ueno Zoological Gardens, Tokyo. The family is still waiting for the right time to enter the room. Haoko is pacing back and forth between the indoor room and the enclosure. Momoko is calm as usual. Sumomo clings to Toto, but she is drowsy. Momoko exhibits estrous behaviors in the videos: 1/ She presents her rump toward Haoko. 2/ She stares at him. 3/ She stands in front of him on all fours. Momoko is on birth control right now, as are Komomo and Momoka. Female gorillas go into estrous even when they are under birth control. Male gorillas do not go into estrous. They receive the signals sent by females in estrous, and move into action. Momoko shows affection toward Haoko. It’s very rare, maybe because she didn’t grow up in a group. She didn’t get to learn gorilla affections. Haoko could get upset with her from time to time, but we know they have had quite a number of beautiful offspring together. Haoko is calm today in October. • In July 2002 she and Momotaro came back to Chiba Zoo when Momotaro was 2 yrs old.
• In Dec 2008 she and Momotaro were transferred to Ueno Zoo as a part of the BL program.
She has 5 offspring: Momotaro*, Komomo, Momoka, Riki and Sumomo
*Momotaro's father is Biju. He passed away in 1999 from suffocation.
