Parents: Unknown
Rearing: Unknown
• In 1987, Monta and Momoko were transferred from Spain to Japan. (age 1 or 3?)
They were kept at Aritake Chojuten Co. Ltd, the animal dealer until they moved to Chiba Zoo in 1993.
• In March 1993, he and Momoko were transferred to Chiba Zoological Park.
NB: The credibility of his birth info is uncertain.
Monta and Momoko grew up together. They were infants when they arrived in Japan. However, due to the allegation of illegal trade, they spent a few years at the animal dealer's place until the allegation was cleared. He desperately needs a companion to live as his kind. He's been living alone most of his adult life. From 2009 until 2010, the zoo tried pairing up Monta and Rola several times. It didn't go well. Since then, he has been all alone. His abnormal behavior of plucking hair has been greatly reduced since the change of his keeper. I hope the zoo will not change the keeper in a short period of time.

POB: Beppu Cable Rakutenchi, Japan
Sire: Gonta | Dam: Rirako
Rearing: Hand-reared
• In Sept 1977, Rola was born and was being hand reared in a vet house. No trial to return her to Rirako. But her case gave a lesson for zoos and keepers in Japan that a gorilla should be raised by its own kind.
• In Nov 1980, she was transferred to Tobu Zoo
Basically she was living alone but her keeper used to play with her.
• In Oct 1993, she was transferred to Ueno Zoo, and lived with her mother, Rirako, and other gorillas.
• In Dec 2008, she and Kenta were transferred to Chiba Zoo and lived with him until he passed away in 2016.
Rola has difficulty in communicating with other gorillas. Especially when she is put with a silverback, she becomes ill except with an individual like Kenta who had no interest in gorillas. She loves sunbathing. She occasionally exhibits abnormal behaviors such as coprophagy, licking urine, regurgitation and reingestion. Rola always searches for earthworms as her companions. But they have a short life-span, plus they disappear in cold weather. I hope the zoo will consider the option of Rola living with other small animals. It may help solve her abnormal behaviors and loneliness. It seems her R/R has been greatly reduced since the change of her keeper.

The video was filmed in the afternoon of October 2023 at Chiba Zoological Park, Japan. Monta is waiting for the door to be opened. Rola is still working on the green feeder. Monta goes back to the indoor exhibit. Monta places his chin on the windowsill and watches people for quite a while. Then he lies down and takes a nap. There are short clips of birds and small monkeys. The video ends with Rola finishing her treats and going back to her room. Chiba Zoo has started a crowdfunding project. I briefly explain what it is and what I think about it in the video.

Karen, Just my opinion, but I would like to see enrichment for Rola and Monta in place now. The zoo has waited for so long to see how not providing proper physical and mental stimulation for the gorillas all those years but now their thinking is that providing those important tools to give way to have more gorillas is not fair spiritually. The zoo administrator would spiritually benefit now by implementing some of the important tools that have long been needed for Montana and Rola. Just a thought

@@sonyawilson1000 They were placed together in 2009 as a trial, but it didn't go well. Since then, the zoo hasn't tried to place them together.

@@marykelly2409 Hi Mary. I completely understand your concern. That is why the zoo is going to improve the environment for Rola and Monta before bringing a new gorilla to the zoo. And through doing so, the zoo would wish to improve their technical aspects too.

Monta, Rola, and all the other gorillas in Japn deserve better. Better enclosures. Better planning, better enrichment, better efforts to help these inrelligent, social beings have the chance to live with at least a companion, if not an actual family. Thank you for getting this effort discussed, Karin. I truly hope Chiba and the other zoos in Japan start making more and more positive changes.

Thank you for making this video. Every time I see a video of Rola and Monta I end up in tears over the lonely and poor conditions these beautiful gorillas are forced to live in. I live in the USA and have visited Japan. I found it advanced, innovative , prosperous and filled with wonderful citizens. I just don’t understand why these precious, helpless animals are not given better care.

I totally understand your point. People in Japan love animals, but when it comes to understanding animal welfare, it is far behind compared to European, North American, and some Asian countries and regions. Rola reminds me of Asante, humanised and unable to live a full gorilla life, but at least Asante has family around her. Sounds like they have good keepers though, just so sad these two are living lonely lives. Love the marmosets and tamarins btw.

Whoever is in charge of the zoo should spend a week camped in both enclosures and see how they like the conditions and what they can improve on. What happens if there is a medical emergency and there is no carer to help. This is no way for gorillas to be kept imo. They both look so sad. Thanks Karin.

正直、今回のクラウドファンディングの積極的な参加になかなか踏み切れません。動物園のHPやクラファンのページも見ましたが、立派な事を仰っているわりに色々な方が環境改善をお願いしても殆ど変わらなかったのに今度こそ本当に改善して頂けるのかな…と疑心暗鬼になっています。 2020年度から専門学校と共同研究されているとありますが、それほど以前から研究していたと言われましてもローラちゃん達のあの環境を見ると…という感じです。結局、担当さん個人の熱意頼みという気がして、ローラちゃん、モンタ君の環境改善のために少しでも協力したいと思う反面、今度も変わらなかったら…と不安に思っています。少額なので私一人が参加してもしなくてもプロジェクトには何の影響もありませんが(笑)、気持ちがスッキリしないのです。😅

お気持ち痛いほど分かります。いままでほとんど変わらず34年間ゴリラの飼育をしてきた過去を思うと、疑心暗鬼になりますよね。「学術的」を連呼されていますが、実際34年間のゴリラ飼育の記録はたぶんA4一、二枚で終わる程度しか記録していないと思います。しかもその８割がモモコとモモタロウがいた時のもの。違ったら証明してほしいくらいです。喉から手が出るほど記録を読みたいです。34年間の反省ではなく、自画自賛をされた日には、ほんとうに大丈夫かと疑う気持ちもあります。ローラとモンタのためと思って協力したことが、結果彼らのように寂しい環境で生きるゴリラを新たにうみだしてしまわないか不安がないといったらうそです。人が変わらなければ、たぶんクラファンしても変わらないと思います。一時期的には人々から注目され園もいろいろ取り組むかもしれませんが、また放置に戻る可能性はなきにしもあらず。千葉市動物公園は専門知識をもった人をチームに雇い入れてほしいし、その人にちゃんと権限をあたえてほしいなとおもいます。今までと同じメンツでやってもダメだと思います。ネガティブな返信になってしまいすみません。とにかくモンタとローラの生活が少しでもあたたかく楽しくなることと、若いゴリラたちがいろんな経験をしてより豊かなゴリラ生を歩んでいけるようになることを願います。Rocket Pochiさん、コメントありがとうございました。よい一日をお過ごしください

おっしゃる通りと思います。仲間がいるのが一番ですね❤ 猫とかでいいのでペットを与えるのもいいかと思いますw ココというゴリラもひとりぼっちでしたが猫が大好きでした❤️ だからローラもミミズと遊ぶのかなと😀 私の意見では動物園の動物は(哺乳類)他の動物を見れる環境になって行くといいなと思っています♪ アフリカのライオンなどは一日中他の動物を見て過ごします。サンタバーバラのライオンも隣のキリンを見て毎日過ごしますがそれだけでかなりのストレス解消となっていると感じています。ほとんどの動物は人間しか見れませんが人間が一番見てて面白くないと思います(笑😅 仲間がいない動物は特に他の動物が見れる環境だと　もっと生き生きと楽しく過ごせるように思います❤ 動画ありがとうございました😊　また次を楽しみにしています💕😀🌸

グレースさん、コメントありがとうございます🙌 まったく同感です。目に入ってくる動物が人間だけなんて、ほんとに気の毒だなと思います。これじゃあその種らしい行動なんて見れたもんじゃありません😓 生き生きと過ごせる環境づくりは動物園の責務ですね。ほんとに遅いスタートですが、まずは今いるモンタとローラのためにさらなる環境改善にスピードもって取り組んでくれることを願います。（園側はいままでローラたちは高齢だからゆっくり様子をみながら改善していくとおっしゃっていましたが、このようなスピード感ではたぶん二人はもたないと思っています。二人を見殺しにする気かと疑っていましたが、ようやく新規プロジェクトを立ち上げたので見守りたいとおもいます😅）

Yes. They may have a tendency to sweep the trouble under the rug. And we, the visitors, may not have been looking at what really is happening with the animals in the zoos. I believe it's not a bad thing for a visitor to question the status quo and approach the zoo, although doing too much may use up the precious time of a busy keeper. The zoo is responsible for being prepared to answer any questions at the front line (i.e., the information desk), so the keeper can concentrate on animal care. Isn't Monta so ikemen? I feel so sorry for both of these beautiful gorillas. This zoo appears to me to be uncaring for too long. It saddens me that Gentaro is owned by this zoo. That is absolutely disgusting. Gentaro deserves better, as do the others owned by this zoo. . Shame, Shane!!!

数日前にクラファンを知りました。クリープランド動物園では他の動物園で生まれた赤ちゃんゴリラを引き取り高齢義母が育てています。日本でも日本にあった飼育方法をみつけられればいいと思います。

ゴリラが幸せに暮らすためには群れ飼育は大原則だと思います。群れだと例えパートナーが亡くなっても、精神的に支え合うメンバーが他にいます。クリーヴランド動物園のフレドリカ（通称フレディー）は今年の6月で50歳になる高齢ゴリラですが、おっしゃる通り別のメスが産んだカヤンベが育児放棄されてすぐに抱き上げ育て、47歳で母乳を上げ始めました。そして今回別の動物園から来た赤ちゃんゴリラのジャミーラの代理母になりこれまた母乳をあげているところが確認されましたよね。ゴリラのすごさもさることながら、その環境を実現させたアメリカの動物園の機敏な行動力、組織力、飼育技術の高さに拍手を送りたいです。日本は上野動物園のスモモの群れへの復帰やモモコの病気の治療など、飼育技術や医療レベルの高さを見せて感動させてくれましたが、こと繁殖となると、他の動物園や海外とのパートナーシップが重要になり、組織力が問われてきます。これをうまくアシストする立場の組織がJAZAだと思います。日本にあった飼育法をあみだすときに、海外の基準からそれると協力関係を結ぶのは難しくなることは忘れてはいけない気がします。良子さん、コメントありがとうございました。良い一日を

I hope this zoo does seriously address there issues with these poor gorillas. But on the whole Japan has not managed their gorilla populations well an I can see why US wouldn’t send any of our gorillas over.

in 1999 there were 35 gorillas in Japan. 25 years later there're just 20 and half of them are old. they must be doing a stellar job in conservation of endangered species.

Как к старым одиноким гориллам, которые почти всю жизнь прожили в одиночестве, запускать молодых горилл. Они будут их обижать, отбирать еду. Кроме этого, Рола боится горилл. Такое решение - равносильно желанию свести их в могилу. Такое решение надо было принимать значительно раньше. Кроме этого, Ролу надо было в детском возрасте пытаться адаптировать с другими гориллами. Про них просто забыли на много лет, а теперь - на старости лет - вспомнили. Я, когда смотрю на Ролу и Монту, у меня сердце кровью обливается. У Монты взгляд полный тоски. Надо было к ним подсадить каких нибудь мелких зверей, чтобы им не было скучно. Многие гориллы успешно сосуществуют с другими животными в зоопарках.

Rola may find it stressful to live with a young gorilla, but she may be okay with senior gorillas, as she used to live with an old silverback and other female gorillas before. Adding small animals to their enclosures would be a great idea. I hope the zoo will consider this option too.🙏

個人的な意見です。　クラファンやると聞いて、千葉が以前から話していた、世界と同等レベルのゴリラ舎建設をついに始動するのか！とワクワクしました。しかしながら、内容は違いました。そちらは計画は進んでいるのでしょうかね？？？？？

殺処分されてしまう犬猫はゴリラとの相性はダメなのですかね？子猫と仲良しだったココがいましたね。小さなサルと同居してるゴリラグループも世界にはいます。殺処分されるぐらいなら、子犬子猫の頃からならゴリラに慣れそうですけども。これは、素人ながらの考えです。

ゴリラライフさん、コメントありがとうございます🌸 大規模なゴリラ舎建設計画はすすんでいるようです( 2035年完成目処）。たぶんその関係者間の会議などでこのクラファンのアイデアが出たのではないかと想像します。園の説明はいろいろ複雑で全体を理解するのが難儀ですよね😅　混合飼育をぜひ園に導入してほしいです。同種との同居を検討しているのだと思いますが、あまりにも単独が長いのでぜひ小動物を彼らと同居する方向に動いてほしいです。

@@karintogorillas 2025年、約10年後モンタもローラも生きているかはわからないですね。低いですよね。そうなると、ゴリラを新たに集めてくる必要がありますね。大きなゴリラ舎だけ作っても意味がないですから。ん？　モモタロウかゲンタロウらが千葉に戻る？新たに何頭もゴリラを海外から譲り受けるのは現状、不可能ですよね、、、、。一方で、京都市動物園も旧類人猿舎を新しく改築予定です。今は、チンパンジーがいる場所。かなり大きな舎になる予定です。 10年以内には実行されそうな気がします。もしかしたら、早ければ数年以内に。ゲンタロウの年齢の件がありますから。どうなるのか、、、、。

千葉市動物公園はWAZA加盟園を自負していますが、海外とのパイプは皆無で完全に他園頼みだと思います。海外にパイプの持った人材を入れれば別ですが。京都市動物園はトラやライオンなどの飼育を断念されたというニュースを目にするたびに、その跡地をゴリラ舎拡充に使われるのかなと思っていましたが、チンパンジーとゴリラ舎が拡充される方向なんでしょうか？千葉より早くできそうですね。さすがです。ちなみに千葉の新ゴリラ舎の構想は2014年に発足しました。いつまで時間かけてんねん！って感じです😞ゴリラライフさん、貴重な情報を教えていただきありがとうございました🙏

IF THE TWO DON'T GET ALONG THEN SOMETHING SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE SOONER. THEY AREN'T LIVING WITH ENRICHMENT AS THERE IS NOTHING IN THEIR ENCLOSURE. NOTHING. It boils down to funding. It's a shame. Two lovely gorillas that look healthy but lonesome. I was worried about Momotaro and Gentaro butting heads, living in such a small , but these two have an even smaller space.

Poor living conditions and lack of enrichment is quite possibly the reason other zoos don’t send companion gorillas to Japan. And why Japan must look no further than its own boundaries to trade gorillas.

É impossível assistir o vídeo sem sentir a solidão e a tristeza do Monta e da Laura, é palpável, o que parece é que Monta desistiu, ele lembra uma pessoa com depressão grave, que desiste de viver, para com as medicações porque não acredita mais que vai melhorar, não vê futuro, olha a vida passar, sinto muita verhonha do ser humano, da falta de empatia, se o Japão está errando faz tempo, não teve e não tem planejamento, porque os outros Paises estão cobrando dos gorilas essa falta de empatia? Os gorilas são as vítimas, eles não são administradores frios que só se preocupam com números, e não acho que toda Europa seja ecemplo de cuidados com gorilas, tem Zoos que estão castrando srus gorila, ele nunca se tornarão Dorsos prateados, é muito perverso, eu não consigo acreditar nesse projeto para 2035, e não vai fazer diferença para Monta e Laura, daquia a dez não se sabe se eles vão estar vivos, se eu vou estar viva, se muitas populações no mundo ainda vai existir, se ainda vai yer gorilas, dez muito tempo, tudo nesse mundo o que tem importância para a maioria das pessoas é o dinheiro, o administrador quer saber de números, do quanto vai lucrar, não da importância da vida, os gorilas saem da mira dos caçadores, mas acabam em uma prisão sem qualidade de vida, largados até o dia de morrer, tem diferença do caçador para alguns administradores? Karin, toda vez que assisto Monta e Laura fico muito revoltada e escrevo muito, obrigada por sempre mostrar como estão esses dois lindos gorilas, eu amo os gorilas.

Bom dia Claudia! I understand how hard it is to watch solitary gorillas, especially Monta and Rola, since they live in poor conditions. They have adjusted to such an environment in deficit, and many people, especially the zoo itself, ued to think they might be just fine as they were. The truth is not. Since the zoo announced they have launched a project to improve their living conditions, I hope the zoo will execute the plan and enhance their well-being as soon as they have succeeded in crowdfunding. This new project is different from the big construction project of the gorilla house by 2035. I have learned that castration is still going on in some European countries. I signed the petition since I believe it is not an ethical option. Thank you, Claudia, for your continuous care of Monta and Rola. Obligada!🌸

Karinさん　千葉のクラファンの状況を毎日眺めています。残り30日で約350万円。 5万円を何口も寄付してくだされば到達可能そうですね。1万円だと350人で、これだと微妙ですね。　達成しなくても寄付金を受け取られる。ただしクラファンの印象としては失敗になる。それは避けて欲しいところです。なんとか達成して欲しいですね。＋＋＋＋＋＋ところで、モンタとモモカならパートナーになれると思うのですが、動物園同士の色々な影響で、そうもいかないのですかね。モモカは2013年4月生まれ。となると、11歳ですね。来年の12歳なら年齢的にも旦那さんもらってもいいですよね。本当は、コモモが年齢的に先でしょうが、モモカが千葉所属ならモモカを移動が可能な気がするのですが。それさえも難しいのですかね。

もう1点。　そもそも動物福祉を改善する為の予算がないのですよね。だとすれば、2035年のプロジェクトの予算はどこから得るのでしょうか？億単位ですよね。

ゴリラライフさん、毎日チェックありがとうございます。私も途中からちょっと心配になってきてSNSなどでシェアするようにしてます😅ローラとモンタのために成功してほしいと思っています。園長のつてで大口の支援者が現れるのかなと思っていたのですがなかなか難しいのですかね・・・。私自身、環境が整ったら千葉に来る個体はモモカの可能性が高いのではないかと思っているのですが、いろんな噂があるのでどうなるのか分かりません。一番のネックは千葉の人材のほうだという気がしています。一人の飼育員が3頭のゴリラと2頭のチンパンジーを担当できるのか。人員を増やすなりなにかしないかぎり起こりうるトラブルに対処できないと思います。京都市動物園さんは、ゴリラ担当は何人体制でしょうか。

2035年完成予定のプロジェクトは千葉市から予算を確保しているので問題ないようです。大きな箱ができても、技術がともなっておらず、ソフト面が弱いということがこの園の最大の問題点なので、そのための準備としてあれもこれも必要じゃないかと会議で専門家なりに指摘されクラファンが必要ということになったのかな・・・と思うのですが、あくまで想像です。

@@karintogorillas そうなんですね。予算があるのなら、箱は作れますね。課題は、ゴリラはどう集めるの？ですね。その為には、おっしゃっているとおり、飼育員ももっと必要ですね。

@@karintogorillas やはり、千葉所属のモモカですか。仮にモモカでも、相手となるオスゴリラがいませんよね。やはり人材育成して、千葉動物園なら安心だと思って貰えたら、海外から支援が得られそうですね。京都市動物園も実は意外と予算が厳しいのか、ゴリラの担当者であっても、他の動物も担当しています。忙しいでしょうね。京都市動物園のゴリラの担当者の数は正確には知りません。ゴリラに関わっていて、ゴリラ舎内にいるのを見かけるという点ですと、男性が3名から4名、女性が3名ぐらいいると思います。他に元ゴリラ担当者で今は他の動物を担当されてる方もいます。

ローラもモンタも良い時期はすぎてしまったかな。モモコがモモタロウを連れて帰ってきた時あたりにモンタにも奥さんがいると良かった。ローラの幸せはモンタといることではなかったようだし。

こんなに貴重な動物が長きにわたり単独で飼育されてきた現状をもっと早くにどうにかしようと動き出せなかったのかと残念に思ってしまいます。とにかく二人の心が満たされるような環境に少しでもなっていってほしいと願います。海野カモメさん、ご視聴・コメントありがとうございました。

@@karintogorillasit really makes you wonder if they been solitary for so long, having another partner for companionship may heightened their anxiety levels. We all want to see them with something ...but, I think it would be detrimental....they are too used to being alone now. Japan needs to get it right and started thinking about animals' well being. I hope they realize they are living breathing intelligent endangered beings...not just a money grab. In my opinion, it starts there. For all the animals in Japan. If their care is subpar for gorillas, I can only think how subpar it is for all of them😢. I hope they do the right thing. Thank you for all your info😊
